    Hardwick Hall Aka Malfoy Manor

Appeared in: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and 2

The ominous Malfoy Manor may not be recognizable at first glance as Derbyshires Hardwick Hall. Thats because CGI was used to enhance the roof and make it pointier. BUT otherwise, the giant windows and imposing facade are all there for you to gawk at in real life, since the property is owned by the National Trust and open to visitors!

According to the BBC, exterior shots were filmed from a helicopter and the film-makers photographed and measured inside to help shoot indoor scenes at the studio, although there are definitely big similarities with the interior, especially the dining room we see near the start of Deathly Hallows Part 1. Remember, when Voldemort is having a fun dinner party with his squad and he kills the Muggle Studies prof who becomes Naginis dinz for the night?

    Differences From The Book

Harry Potter Filming Locations in Ireland

Columbus repeatedly checked with Rowling to make sure he was getting minor details correct. Kloves described the film as being “really faithful” to the book. He added dialogue, of which Rowling approved. One of the lines originally included had to be removed after Rowling told him that it would directly contradict an event in the then-unreleased fifth Harry Potter novel Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

The book’s timeline is not enforced in the film. In the book, Harry’s eleventh birthday is in 1991. On the film set for 4 Privet Drive, Dudley’s certificates from primary school bear the year 2001.

The Cliffs Of Moher Harry Potter Scene

If youve read Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, then youll have come across the paragraph below before. This is where J.K. Rowling first takes the reader inside the cave.

An eerie sight met their eyes: they were standing on the edge of a great black lake, so vast that Harry could not make out the distant banks, in a cavern so high that the ceiling, too, was out of sight.

A misty greenish light shone far away in what looked like the middle of the lake it was reflected in the completely still water below.

The greenish glow and the light from the two wands were the only things that broke the otherwise velvety blackness, though their rays did not penetrate as far as Harry would have expected. The darkness was somehow denser than normal darkness

One such perk Dumbledore enjoys is the enviable ability to apparate himself and Harry Potter to an unrivaled vantage point. This particular point is before a set of sea cliffs on the west coast of Ireland.

Harry is on the hunt for horcruxes. Huge black cliffs are sulking behind mist from a dark sea. Behind his glasses are a set of eyes so stunned youd think hed seen He Who Must Not Be Named. Harrys life and Dumbledores life are on the line. As scenes go, as set pieces go, this is big and only the epic will do.

But cliffs can be found on any island. They can even be imagined in CGI. So why Ireland? Why Clare? Why Moher?

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

    Sheer brilliance

Katherine Webster, director of the Cliffs of Moher visitor centre, has an idea: What sets the cliffs apart from many of the others is how sheer they are. That, and those eight dramatic headlands rolling off into the distance.

Film commissioner of the Irish Film Board Naoise Barry agrees. Simply put, they’re unique, he says. You won’t get it anywhere else. When cliffs like that hit the big screen it just blows you away.

    Design And Special Effects

Judianna Makovsky served as the costume designer. She re-designed the Quidditch robes, having initially planned to use those shown on the cover of the American book, but deemed them “a mess.” Instead, she dressed the Quidditch players in “preppie sweaters, 19th-century fencing breeches and arm guards.” Production designer Stuart Craig built the sets at Leavesden Studios, including Hogwarts Great Hall, basing it on many English cathedrals. Although originally asked to use an existing old street to film the Diagon Alley scenes, Craig decided to build his own set, comprising Tudor, Georgian and Queen Anne architecture.

Columbus originally planned to use both animatronics and CGI animation to create the magical creatures, including Fluffy. Nick Dudman, who worked on Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, was given the task of creating the needed prosthetics, with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop providing creature effects. John Coppinger stated that the magical creatures that needed to be created had to be designed multiple times. The film features nearly 600 special effects shots, involving numerous companies. Industrial Light & Magic created Lord Voldemort‘s face on the back of Quirrell, Rhythm & Hues animated Norbert and Sony Pictures Imageworks produced the Quidditch scenes.
