The First Edition Of Harry Potter And The Philosophers Stone Had A Print Run Of 500 Copies
Its been twenty years since we first met the boy wizard who lived inside a cupboard under the stairs, in a perfectly normal home at Number 4 Privet Drive, thank you very much. Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone was published in 1997 on June 26, and while the first print of the hardcover ran with only a minuscule 500 copies 300 of them going to libraries the series has now sold more than 450 million copies worldwide and has been translated into 67 languages.
What we celebrate on June 26 is more than a bestselling childrens book series, but what it has come to mean and developed into in the twenty years since 1997. The everlasting effects of the magic can be seen all around the muggle world, which will now forever pale in comparison to the wonderful wizarding world created by JK Rowling. Countless Potterheads are still waiting for an owl to fly in through a window with our letters from The Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. We wont give up!
Open Licence For Online School Readings Of The Harry Potter Book Still Available
Teachers can continue to post video readings of J.K. Rowlings Harry Potter books to students currently unable to attend school during the UK lockdown restrictions. The copyright restrictions on the series have been relaxed during the Covid-19 outbreak. You can read all about the guidelines right here.
And we encourage all the teachers out there to put on their best Hagrid voices during your dramatic readings!

How To Celebrate International Harry Potter Day
Everything you need to know about the occasion and how to mark it
Few books have struck a global chord quite like the Harry Potter series. The novels inspired a mega film franchise, acclaimed stage play, entire theme park and even a new sport . And thats before including the countless merchandise or book and gaming spin offs.
Once a year, the magic of the wizarding universe is celebrated with a special International Harry Potter Day, with fans engaging in numerous Potter-orientated activities.
Hang On It Was National Harry Potter Day Already This Year
Yes, this is strangely enough entirely possible. The date shown for National Harry Potter Day can change, if for instance several hundred people tweeted about Harry Potter Day in early April, then in May a few thousand people tweeted about Harry Potter day, then the date shown for National Harry Potter Day, could come up twice 😀

Can I Register Harry Potter Day
We don’t have an international authority or governmental remit to declare any officially celebrated “national Harry Potter day”. We only aim to programatically reflect what ‘National Day’ it is based of what The Internet Says It Is. We believe this is much more fun as it reflects the nature of how the most amusing / interesting national days are often created organically and grow based off popular social trends and sharing, as such we don’t add new days to our database unless they are organically observed on social media.
Open Letter On Justice And Open Debate
In July 2020, Rowling signed an open letter published in Harper’s Magazine titled “A Letter on Justice and Open Debate“, with 150 other public figures, largely writers and academics. The letter states in part, “The free exchange of information and ideas, the lifeblood of a liberal society, is daily becoming more constricted”, criticises “a vogue for public shaming and ostracism” and “a blinding moral certainty”, warns of fear spreading in the arts and media, and denounces President Donald Trump as “a real threat to democracy”. The letter sparked much debate about cancel culture . Rowling stated she was proud to sign the letter to defend “open debate and freedom of thought and speech”.
Objections to the letter included accusations that Rowling and the other signatories had powerful means to publish their opinions, and that it was disingenuous to attempt to silence others who might offer criticism of their views. Some thought that Rowling was trying to specifically suppress criticism about her statements concerning transgender topics. After learning who also signed the letter, Jennifer Finney Boylan expressed regret over her support, and stated she would not have signed had she known who the other signatories were. Rowling then sarcastically tweeted that Boylan should incur public penance for the association with her.

About The Slytherin Pride Day
The House of Slytherin is one of the four houses of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry along with Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff. It was founded by Salazar Slytherin. Slytherins are known for being ambitious and cunning. They have produced smart wizards and witches but some of them were considered dark or villainous. J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter book series, said that Slytherin corresponds to the water element.
During the Slytherin Pride Day, Harry Potter fans rejoice and are brought together by the celebration they organize themselves. They dress in Slytherin uniforms and try to act cunning and ambitious. Fans also take advantage of this day to watch film series or read books.

Some of this wonderful fan-made content gets more than just views though. A fan made a Kickstarter project about the life of young Tom Riddle, titled Voldemort, Origins of the Heir, uploaded a teaser on YouTube and received over 30 million views within the first few days. The project was stalled till the filmmakers could get a go ahead from the Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. which owns the copyright to the stories, characters and everything Harry Potter. The overwhelming response to the teaser ensured they received the nod. There will be more of the Dark Lord in the days to come.
Potterheads are everywhere and so is the inspired content. There are a great number of podcasts discussing the wonders of wizardry and witchcraft. Pottercast and MuggleCast have both been around for a very long time and remain the most-followed and trusted sources of discussion and celebration, and for getting better acquainted with the actors and creators from the Harry Potter Universe.
And of course, as Harry Potter grew up, so did the readers. There exists an entire world of Harry Potter Erotica, which talks about what really happens when hundreds of excited teenagers live together in a castle that has only too many places to hide in there is literally a Room of Requirement on the seventh floor. Podcast hosts Allie LeFevere, Lyndsay Rush, and Danny Chapman discovered this genre and it is the basis of their NSFW Potterotica Podcast.
Key Things To Know About Harry Potter Day
Prefects, when I give the word, you will organise your house and take your charges, in an orderly fashion, to the evacuation point. These chilling words precede one of the most epic and heartbreaking chapters in the series, in which Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters turn up at the School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and attempt to take control of the school and kill Harry Potter by means of war. Which is why Rowling, always known for her fan-love, has taken it upon herself to tweet annual apologies for the deaths that occurred during the battle. It’s the 16th anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts. I’m having a moment’s silence over my keyboard. I hated killing some of those people. Today I would just like to say: I’m really sorry about Fred.

These go from origin stories, future predictions, fan theories, successful spin-offs like Rainbow Rowells Bestselling YA novel Fangirl, hilarious comics that explore what it would be like if the sage-like Albus Dumbledore was in fact, a jerk, and what is life as a background Slytherin, the high school-comedy-like life of the Marauders before the time of Voldemort, to list just a few. Owing to their singular brilliance and also the size of the fandom, the fanfiction often becomes as wild and viral as the original stories.
Case in point, wonderfully sticky The Mysterious Ticking Clock by Potter Puppet Pals, a Youtube content creators channel which consists of short hand-puppet videos of all the major characters from the books.
The Mysterious Ticking Noise has been viewed over 17 million times, and is such an integral part of Potter-inspired pop culture that when Alan Rickman arrived at at the screening of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, the huge crowd serenaded him with the Potter Puppet Pals version of Snape Snape, Severus Snape
