The First Edition Of Harry Potter And The Philosophers Stone Had A Print Run Of 500 Copies

Video: 3rd annual Harry Potter Day held in Waterbury

Its been twenty years since we first met the boy wizard who lived inside a cupboard under the stairs, in a perfectly normal home at Number 4 Privet Drive, thank you very much. Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone was published in 1997 on June 26, and while the first print of the hardcover ran with only a minuscule 500 copies 300 of them going to libraries the series has now sold more than 450 million copies worldwide and has been translated into 67 languages.

What we celebrate on June 26 is more than a bestselling childrens book series, but what it has come to mean and developed into in the twenty years since 1997. The everlasting effects of the magic can be seen all around the muggle world, which will now forever pale in comparison to the wonderful wizarding world created by JK Rowling. Countless Potterheads are still waiting for an owl to fly in through a window with our letters from The Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. We wont give up!

Open Licence For Online School Readings Of The Harry Potter Book Still Available

Teachers can continue to post video readings of J.K. Rowlings Harry Potter books to students currently unable to attend school during the UK lockdown restrictions. The copyright restrictions on the series have been relaxed during the Covid-19 outbreak. You can read all about the guidelines right here.

And we encourage all the teachers out there to put on their best Hagrid voices during your dramatic readings!

Can I Register Harry Potter Day

We don’t have an international authority or governmental remit to declare any officially celebrated “national Harry Potter day”. We only aim to programatically reflect what ‘National Day’ it is based of what The Internet Says It Is. We believe this is much more fun as it reflects the nature of how the most amusing / interesting national days are often created organically and grow based off popular social trends and sharing, as such we don’t add new days to our database unless they are organically observed on social media.

Open Letter On Justice And Open Debate

In July 2020, Rowling signed an open letter published in Harper’s Magazine titled “A Letter on Justice and Open Debate“, with 150 other public figures, largely writers and academics. The letter states in part, “The free exchange of information and ideas, the lifeblood of a liberal society, is daily becoming more constricted”, criticises “a vogue for public shaming and ostracism” and “a blinding moral certainty”, warns of fear spreading in the arts and media, and denounces President Donald Trump as “a real threat to democracy”. The letter sparked much debate about cancel culture . Rowling stated she was proud to sign the letter to defend “open debate and freedom of thought and speech”.

Objections to the letter included accusations that Rowling and the other signatories had powerful means to publish their opinions, and that it was disingenuous to attempt to silence others who might offer criticism of their views. Some thought that Rowling was trying to specifically suppress criticism about her statements concerning transgender topics. After learning who also signed the letter, Jennifer Finney Boylan expressed regret over her support, and stated she would not have signed had she known who the other signatories were. Rowling then sarcastically tweeted that Boylan should incur public penance for the association with her.

The project was stalled till the filmmakers could get a go ahead from the Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. which owns the copyright to the stories, characters and everything Harry Potter. The overwhelming response to the teaser ensured they received the nod. There will be more of the Dark Lord in the days to come.

Prefects, when I give the word, you will organise your house and take your charges, in an orderly fashion, to the evacuation point. It’s the 16th anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts. I’m having a moment’s silence over my keyboard. I hated killing some of those people.
