Harry wished he had about eight more eyes. He turned his head in every direction as they walked up the street, trying to look at everything at once: the shops, the things outside them, the people doing their shopping.

When Harry wakes the next morning, he tries to tell himself that what happened the previous night had all been a dream and that Hagrid taking him to a school for Wizards called Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry had never happened. But when he opens his eyes, Hagrid had fallen asleep on the couch and he finds that it has all happened. He hears a tapping noise coming from the window and lets in an Owl. The owl drops a newspaper on Hagrids lap and begins to claw Hagrids coat. Hagrid tells Harry to pay the owl so Harry does what he says and the owl leaves. Hagrid tells him they have to go and buy his things, but Harry worries because he hasnt got any money. Hagrid tells him his parents didnt leave him without money and that their first stop is Gringotts, the wizards bank. He explains that it is run by Goblins and that youd be mad to try and rob it. Hagrid says Dumbledore also needs something from Gringotts, so Hagrid has to go get it.

Plot Of The Sorcerers Stone

The plot of the book once the book has made it to the wizarding world and Hogwarts is very school oriented as well as getting Harry Potter situated in the wizarding world. When Harry finds that Hagrid, the groundskeeper of Hogwarts has helped the headmaster named Albus Dumbledore hide a mysterious item, he and his friends jump into action figure out what the item is and protect it. Along the way they get into trouble a few times leading them to go into several restricted sections of the castle that only increases their curiosity.

Throughout the book Harry also learns a lot about who he is and about his parents since they went to the same school of Hogwarts as himself. He also needs to come to terms with being a celebrity in the wizarding world that he has only just now discovered.

Harry conspicuously wheels his own little luggage rack onto Kings Cross Station in order to get to Platform 9 3/4. This rack containing his spellbook and his owl, Hedwig, is called a cart in the US Edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, while in the UK version, Harry is pushing a trolley.

Likewise, the Hogwarts candy cart is called the trolley in the UK version, though, they did choose to keep that verbiage in the US version of the movies as well.

Taking Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone at face value, the films first two acts are more about discovery and childlike wonder. The once-abused Harry is swept from his life of neglect and mistreatment at the hands of his aunt and uncle, to one where the impossible is possible. In the magical world, Harry is a wealthy celebrity, a talented athlete, and a gifted wizard with a bright future. Up until the films climax, where Harry confronts Voldemort, Harry is living out every childs fantasy.

What makes Harry a hero, however, isnt any of his talents. He may seem especially gifted by fate, but that doesnt mean much when your lifes on the line. Instead, Harrys heroism derives from his bravery, the defining feature of Gryffindor house. He proves this bravery after he is tempted by Voldemort and still chooses to oppose him, refusing to hand over the Sorcerers Stone and even miraculously fighting off Voldemort s host, Professor Quirrell.

Though Harry has been bold from the movies beginning, standing up to Draco and sneaking around the school at night, his choice to investigate the Sorcerers Stone and oppose Voldemort firmly cements this characterization. This stays consistent for the rest of the series, as Harry continually takes initiative in the fight against Dark Magic even when he doesnt need to. Unlike other heroes, Harry isnt necessarily forced into conflicts he runs headlong into them, proving his mettle long after the events of Sorcerers Stone.

Reading the book as an adult can make the resolution of these books seem childish and that is something that will continue on through most of the series as the characters are literal children. For this book specifically it would make one wonder why grown adults that have been through school themselves would not be able to accomplish simple puzzles that the trio Harry, Ron, and Hermione could do.

The book ends rather abruptly. The last chapter contains the end of the story as well as the final confrontation. This seemed rather jarring to me. I feel that it could have been handled with whole additional chapter that expands slightly on Harrys return to the muggle world and show that he has learned that not all is the same as when he left. That he as a character has definitively grown apart from the wishes of his Aunt and Uncle and has a hunger to return back to the wizarding world.

Harry has been at Hogwarts for around two weeks when he finds out that the Gryffindors will have flying lessons with the Slytherins, much to his disliking. Harry does not want to spend more time with Malfoy than he has to. However, Harry finds that he is quite a natural at flying. Madam Hooch leads the class, gently sending the new fliers off the ground. Neville has an accident when his broom runs amok and breaks his wrist. Madam Hooch takes him to the Hospital Wing telling everyone to stay on the ground while she is away. Malfoy notices a Remembrall belonging to Neville, picks it up, and begins to fly around with it. Harry goes after Malfoy, who throws the ball in the air. Harry catches it spectacularly and lands safely back on the ground. Just then, Professor McGonagall arrives, reprimanding Harry and ordering him to follow her. But instead of punishing him, McGonagall introduces him to Oliver Wood, captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team, and makes him the Gryffindor teams new Seeker.

Introduction To Harry Potter And The Sorcerers Stone

This books first edition was released in October of 1998 and was written by J.K. Rowling. The book is 309 pages long not including any table of contents. The pages are spread by 17 chapters. My copy has the illustrations at the top of each chapter, I am not sure if this is something that has changed in the many editions that have been released since.

The book starts off introducing the wizarding world from the vantage point of the Dursleys who we later find out are the Aunt and Uncle of Harry Potter, a boy whos parents were murdered while he managed to survive. The attack on Harrys parents left a signature lightning bolt scar on his forehead.

This was a fantastic way to introduce a new different world to an audience and is done in a very creative way. I must applaud J. K. Rowling for setting up the story in this way as even though this book is fast paced, it steeps the reader into the world from a perspective that would likely be more like our own.

The story then takes a time leap to when Harry has grown up and gets a letter of acceptance into the magical school called Hogwarts. The Dursleys are very against this and do whatever they can to keep Harry a normal boy in their eyes. They fail in this after taking drastic measures to stop the letters from being sent in larger and larger quantities. So the rest of the book is Harry Potters introduction to the the magical world that is unknown to us Muggles .

Design And Special Effects

Judianna Makovsky served as the costume designer. She re-designed the Quidditch robes, having initially planned to use those shown on the cover of the American book, but deemed them “a mess.” Instead, she dressed the Quidditch players in “preppie sweaters, 19th-century fencing breeches and arm guards.” Production designer Stuart Craig built the sets at Leavesden Studios, including Hogwarts Great Hall, basing it on many English cathedrals. Although originally asked to use an existing old street to film the Diagon Alley scenes, Craig decided to build his own set, comprising Tudor, Georgian and Queen Anne architecture.

Columbus originally planned to use both animatronics and CGI animation to create the magical creatures, including Fluffy. Nick Dudman, who worked on Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, was given the task of creating the needed prosthetics, with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop providing creature effects. John Coppinger stated that the magical creatures that needed to be created had to be designed multiple times. The film features nearly 600 special effects shots, involving numerous companies. Industrial Light & Magic created Lord Voldemort‘s face on the back of Quirrell, Rhythm & Hues animated Norbert and Sony Pictures Imageworks produced the Quidditch scenes.

Differences From The Book

Columbus repeatedly checked with Rowling to make sure he was getting minor details correct. Kloves described the film as being really faithful to the book. He added dialogue, of which Rowling approved. One of the lines originally included had to be removed after Rowling told him that it would directly contradict an event in the then-unreleased fifth Harry Potter novel Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

The books timeline is not enforced in the film. In the book, Harrys eleventh birthday is in 1991. On the film set for 4 Privet Drive, Dudleys certificates from primary school bear the year 2001.
