What Does Harry Potter Mean To You?

The story of Harry Potter is not just about law, but about a society trying to establish a rule of law. The Ministry of Magic is not a dictatorship, but it is not a democracy. The failures of the Ministry and the Order are not glossed over. In fact, they get presented with concern. Portraits In The Headmaster’s Office

The portraits in the Headmaster’s office depict all the former Heads of Hogwarts, with the exception of Dolores Umbridge. They advise the Headmaster and are “honour-bound to give service to the present headmaster” . Rowling has explained that portraits of past headteachers tend to be more realistic than most, as the subject in question usually imparts knowledge and teaches them how to behave before their death. The portrait of Snape was installed in the Headmaster’s Office at Harry’s request.

Crucio: Bringing Out The Evil Even In The Good

The Cruciatus Curse offers a deep and disturbing insight into Harrys character. It brings out his dark side. Harry wished that he knew how to do the Cruciatus curse so that he could make Snape lie on his back and twitch and jerk like that spider.

Harry later would use the curse on three different occasions. After Bellatrix Lestrange kills Sirius Black, Harry chases her. Upon catching up with her, he uses the curse on her. He also attempts to use it on Snape after the latter killed Dumbledore.

Harry, in the seventh book, used it to torture Hogwarts professor Amycus Carrow into unconsciousness. Carrow had spit in Professor Minerva McGonagalls face. Harry avenged her.

Amycus had spit in McGonagalls face, which angered Harry. For a second, Harry forgot all about ethics and good or bad. He lifted his wand and shouted the Crucio spell. Amycus was lifted from his feet and writhed through the air. He looked like a drowning man. The spell made him thrash and howl in pain. Finally, he smashed into the bookcase like shattering glass. He became completely unconscious. Harry exclaimed that he now understood the excitement that Bellatrix got from using the spell. He finally understood that one could cause excruciating pain only when you really mean it.

In all these three instances, Harry chose to use the Cruciatus Curse. That is, however, disturbing. He could have just immobilized his opponent. Harrys use of the Cruciatus Curse poses a moral question.

What Is Bellatrix Signature Spell

Death Eater Bellatrix Lestrange was a well known practitioner of the Cruciatus Curse, where she would torture numerous victims to her immense satisfaction thus this curse could be assumed to be her signature spell. It was often said by Dumbledore that she sadistically liked to play with her food before eating it.

Magic In Harry Potter

In J. K. Rowling‘s Harry Potter series, magic is depicted as a supernatural force that can be used to override the usual laws of nature. Many fictional magical creatures exist in the series, while ordinary creatures also sometimes exhibit magical properties. Magical objects are also described. The small number of humans who are able to perform magic refer to the rest of the population, oblivious to the existence of magic, as “Muggles” in the United Kingdom and “No-Maj” in the United States.

In humans, magic or the lack thereof is an inborn attribute. It is usually inherited, carried on “dominant resilient genes”. Magic is the norm for the children of magical couples and less common in those of Muggles. Exceptions exist: those unable to do magic who are born to magical parents are known as Squibs, whereas a witch or wizard born to Muggle parents is known as a Muggle-born, or by the derogatory term “Mudblood”. While Muggle-borns are quite common, Squibs are extremely rare.

Rowling based many magical elements of the Harry Potter universe on real-world mythology and magic. She has described this as “a way of giving texture to the world”. The books present the idea that the Muggle interpretation of these stories is a distorted version of what goes on in the wizarding world.

Unbearable Pain By The Cruciatus Curse

Harry himself would describe the effect of the Cruciatus curse as causing immense pain. He exclaimed that it was a feeling worse than one thousand white-hot knives, boring into the skin.

The curse is powerful enough to cause not only physical, but also mental damage. Damage is permanent and irreversible. At the Little Hangleton graveyard, when Harry faced Voldemort, Voldemort attacked him with the Cruciatus Curse.

Barty Crouch Jr. had enchanted Portkey. The Portkey took Harry and Cedric to the Little Hangleton graveyard. After killing Cedric, Lord Voldemort started to attack Harry. He made Harry vow with the Cruciatus curse after challenging him to a duel. The pain that Harry felt almost blinded him.

How did J.K. Rowling come up with the names of all of those magical wizarding spells?

During a 2004 interview at the Edinburgh Book Festival, Rowling said:

Does anyone know where Avada Kedavra came from? It is an ancient spell in Aramaic, and it is the original of abracadabra, which means let the thing be destroyed. Originally, it was used to cure illness and the thing was the illness, but I decided to make it the thing as in the person standing in front of me. I take a lot of liberties with things like that. I twist them round and make them mine.

Rowling studied French and Classics at the University of Exeter, and the names of most charms, curses, jinxes, and spellsfrom Accio to Sectumsempraare based on Latin roots!

Lets look at the etymology, or word origins, of the spells in the wizarding worldand where Latin ends and Rowlings imagination begins.

Confundo Used To Confuse Opponents

Here’s an easy one. Confundo is the exact first-person conjugation of the Latin verb “confundere.” The prefix con- means “with or together” and the suffix -fundo means “to pour.” When put together, the word literally means something like “mix,” but is now figuratively used to be “jumble or confuse.”

What Is Imperius Curse

The Imperius Curse was a tool of the Dark Arts, and was one of the three Unforgivable Curses. When cast successfully, the curse placed the victim completely under the casters control, though a person with exceptional strength of will could resist it. A person under the curse was said to be Imperiused.

Harry Used The Imperius Curse Multiple Times During The Gringotts Heist

Death Eaters had a history of using Imperio to make innocent victims do their bidding. Harry, however, turned the tables by casting the hypnosis spell three times on two different figures in Deathly Hallows. On their search for Horcruxes, Harry, Ron, and Hermione traveled to Gringotts Bank to find and recover Helga Hufflepuff‘s cup. Since the trio were on the lam from the law and could not be seen, they were forced to use a variety of spells to break in undetected. To get inside, Harry and the group disguised themselves. Hermione used a Polyjuice potion to transform into Bellatrix Lestrange so they could gain access to the Lestrange Vault.

While getting to the vault, the trio ran into Bogrod, a Goblin bank teller, and Travers, a Death Eater. To get them to participate in the heist as accomplices, Harry used Crucio on both figures. Bogrod briefly regained consciousness when they passed through one of the many security enchantments in the underground section of the bank. To keep the mission going as planned Harry Potter cast a second Imperius Curse on the Goblin before he could raise the alarm to stop them from robbing Gringotts. Even with various charms placed within the vault, the trio managed to escape with the Horcrux relatively unharmed.
