The Real Birthplace Of Harry Potter

If you search for the birthplace of Harry Potter, you will come up with a range of locations. Theres even a cafe in Edinburgh which has long claimed to be the birthplace of Harry Potter.

Thankfully, the rumours about where Harry Potter was born, or at least, was first penned, were laid to rest by JK Rowling herself. In 2020, she stated that she first put pen to paper on the first Harry Potter book in a private flat near Clapham Junction train station. Youll find this in the district of Battersea, London.

Currently there is nothing to mark this flat, which is above some shops on a high street. You can see the location here on Google Maps. Eagle eyed fans will also notice that a nearby lane is called Severus Rd, which may be the inspiration for the Professor of Potions first name.

Its not really worth the visit, but hey, if you are a true fan wanting to tick off all the locations, be my guest.

Christ Church In England

Christ Church is in Oxford and those who are familiar with the steps at the entrance to Hogwarts will definitely recognize this location. While the interior was not where the movies were filmed, it was the inspiration for the famous dining hall that’s responsible for so many memorable scenes, including where Harry is almost sorted into Slytherin rather than Gryffindor. With its long tables illuminated by candlelight, it’s easy to see how the Great Hall inside of Christ Church could have inspired the Great Hall in the;Harry Potter;movies. Oxford is also home to several other locations that were used in the films as well as plenty of England history, so it’s worth a walk around to explore everything.

The Leaky Cauldron: Leadenhall Market London England

Wizard pub, The Leaky Cauldron, was set in what is now an opticians in Bulls Head Passage, Leadenhall Market. Behind that was where the glittering Diagon Alley shopping street was imagined, selling spell books and potions so enticing that Harry wished he had eight eyes to see.

Whilst you probably wont find any magic shops, the ornate Victorian marketplace is a splendid place to pick up some Harry Potter inspired British fashion. Bag yourself a classic wax Barbour jacket, as sported by Ron Weasley in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

Harry Potter In Glencoe

Filming for the third Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, took place on location in Glencoe in May and June 2003. Regular visitors to Clachaig Inn and Glencoe will spot a familiar looking backdrop in the film, and in subsequent Harry Potter films.

During the spring of 2003, three sets were built near to the bottom of Clachaig Gully, and quite literally, just across the road from Clachaig Inn.

The sets were located so as to take in the fantastic scenery, overlooking the Torren Lochan, and the Signal Rock forest to the rugged hills of the glen. Filming continued for a period of several weeks and most of the stars were seen on set at some time or other during the course of the filming.

Visitors to Clachaig during the early summer were quite taken aback to find Hagrids Hut, complete with pumpkin patch and smoking chimney, the sundial and the turreted gatehouse, and the Bridge to Nowhere sat neatly on the hillside above Clachaig.

The sets have now been removed and the hillsides returned to their natural state, leaving behind little evidence of the excitement that descended upon this quiet corner of the glen for a few weeks. Of course, location filming is not new to Glencoe.

Over many years a number of well known and very successful films have been shot in the glen. Some of these have featured brief scenes, whilst others have involved elaborate sets and a considerable amount of filming.

Another filming location for Harry Potter in Yorkshire was Goathland train station. Found in the North York Moors in the village of Goathland , this was the filming location of the Hogwarts train station, Hogsmeade.

The station appeared in Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone. When the train pulls into the station, we can see Hogwarts in the distance . Its here that Hagrid welcomes the first years and takes them to the boats which they cross to the school.

It also features at the end of the same movie, when the students head home after the end of their first year of adventures at Hogwarts.

Goathland train station is a part of the North Yorkshire Moors railway, and is an active station, with services running to Whitby. Its free to visit, and theres a fee to park if you park on site. You can even stay on site, in the camping train.

There are also a variety of experiences on offer, including the chance to ride a steam train or take a ride on a classic Pullman dining train.

The Jacobite Steam Train

What These Harry Potter Characters Were Supposed To Look Like

As any Harry Potter fan will know, if you want to get to Hogwarts you have to take the Hogwarts Express train. Thrillingly, the Hogwarts Express is a real train and you can ride it!

But it isnt really called the Hogwarts Express, its real name is The Jacobite. The now famous steam train has been operating since 1984 under different names and operators. The service was started as a way to boost tourism and to keep open the scenic train route between Fort William and Mallaig.

The steam train was used as the Hogwarts Express in the films, and the train and parts of its train route were shown in all 8 of the Harry Potter films. Scenes included exteriors, interiors, and scenery along the route. The most iconic is the train going over the Glenfinnan Viaduct.

Note that not all scenes featuring the Hogwarts Express were shot in Scotland. The main setting used for the London station was of course King Cross train station in London, and the main setting for the Hogsmeade stations was the Goathland train station in Yorkshire. The steam train locomotive was shot in these locations as well as in Scotland.

The locomotive used to pull the Hogwarts Express train in the movies was the;GWR 4900 Class 5972;Olton Hall, and this is currently on display for those doing the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London. But the steam locomotive that is currently being used to The Jacobite is similar in appearance to the one used in the films.

Other Iconic London Landmarks

Appeared in: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

When the Order of the Phoenix comes to rescue Harry, they go for a fun little ride over the Thames and pass a bunch of iconic London landmarks, including Canary Wharf, the HMS Belfast , the Palace of Westminster and a few bridges. If you follow this sequence, the way they fly is pretty ridiculous and doesnt make a ton of sense, but nonetheless thats movie magic for ya

Likewise, in Half-Blood Prince, when the Death Eaters go on their murdery rampage around London, you see quite a few iconic London spots as well. For instance, in the overhead view of the Thames as they rush into the scene, youll actually see the London Eye in the lower right side if you look hard enough, which means the Houses of Parliament are found diagonally across.

King’s Cross In England

King’s Cross is also a real place that many local Londoners were familiar with before the;Harry Potter;movies even came out. The train station, which served as the location for Platform 9 3/4, looks almost identical to the movie with the exception of the movie magic that allowed Harry and friends to pass through the brick wall. Funny enough, there is a sign in the train station between the platforms numbered nine and 11 which says ‘Platform 9 3/4’ but despite its seemingly real qualities, we’re sad to report that no – running into this wall does not actually bring one to the Hogwarts Express. Sorry!

Platform 9 And The Hogwarts Express

This is where Hogwarts students catch their train up to Scotland at the beginning of the term and travel back down on when the school year is over.

It was actually on platforms 4 and 5 that scenes for the films were recorded but if you try hard enough, you can find the entrance to Platform 9 ¾if you know where to go!;

Also here you will find the grand Victorian St. Pancras Station just next door.

The outer facade of St. Pancras was used for filming Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets when Harry and Ron decide to travel to school in a flying Ford Anglia when Harry cannot get through the barriers to the Hogwarts Express.

Prince Of Wales Bridge

Where did they film the Great Hall in Harry Potter?

Appeared in: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1

Formerly known as the Second Severn Crossing, the Prince of Wales Bridge links England to South Wales and is the bridge we briefly spot in Deathly Hallows Part 1 when Ron, Harry and Hermione are trudging along on their Horcrux hunting journey.
