Is It PHILOSOPHER’S or SORCERER’s Stone? – Harry Potter Explained

Luggage On Platform 9 3/4

Harry conspicuously wheels his own little luggage rack onto Kings Cross Station in order to get to Platform 9 3/4. This rack containing his spellbook and his owl, Hedwig, is called a “cart” in the US Edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, while in the UK version, Harry is pushing a “trolley”.

Likewise, the Hogwarts candy cart is called the trolley in the UK version, though, they did choose to keep that verbiage in the US version of the movies as well.

If only the hat had mentioned a house for people who felt a bit queasy, that would have been the one for him.

Peeves, dropping stuff over the new first-year students

The new students are greeted at the castle door by Professor Minerva McGonagall, who tells them they will soon be sorted into their houses. All Hogwarts students live in one of four residences: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin, with each house having its own team for Quidditch. The houses are in a yearlong competition with one another to acquire the most points, which are earned by success in Quidditch games and given by teachers for academic achievement and lost for student infractions, in order to win the House Cup awarded at the end of the year.

The first-years wait in an antechamber while McGonagall checks to see whether it is time yet. The Hogwarts ghosts glide into the room by mistake while debating whether to offer Peeves another chance.

After a brief mental discussion with the hat in which it tries to suggest Slytherin to him, the hat places Harry in Gryffindor. Harry is pleased to find that Ron joins in Gryffindor with him. Draco Malfoy is placed in Slytherin.

Uses In Education And Business

Writers on education and business subjects have used the book as an object lesson. Writing about clinical teaching in medical schools, Jennifer Conn contrasted Snape’s technical expertise with his intimidating behaviour towards students. Quidditch coach Madam Hooch on the other hand, illustrated useful techniques in the teaching of physical skills, including breaking down complex actions into sequences of simple ones and helping students to avoid common errors. Joyce Fields wrote that the books illustrate four of the five main topics in a typical first-year sociology class: “sociological concepts including culture, society, and socialisation stratification and social inequality social institutions and social theory“.

Stephen Brown noted that the early Harry Potter books, especially Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, were a runaway success despite inadequate and poorly organised marketing. Brown advised marketing executives to be less preoccupied with rigorous statistical analyses and the “analysis, planning, implementation, and control” model of management. Instead he recommended that they should treat the stories as “a marketing masterclass”, full of enticing products and brand names. For example, a real-world analogue of Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans was introduced under licence in 2000 by toymaker Hasbro.

Mrs Weasley’s Christmas Gift

Harry’s first Christmas at Hogwarts is a happy one. Its the first time that he gets a few presents of his own, the best of which is a magical heirloom left by his father. He also gets a few other things like a rusty coin from his aunt Petunia and a dazzling sweater from Mrs. Weasley. If you read the UK version of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, he receives a “jumper” from Mrs. Weasley.

The two words. “sweater” and “jumper” are entirely different. And considering young readers didnt have the luxury of a quick and easy Google search to differentiate the two terms int he 1990s, it stands to reason why they change it in the U.S. printed version.

Filch takes Harry and Hermione to McGonagall’s office, where they meet Neville. McGonagall, very disappointed, takes 50 points each from the three of them and gives them all detention, which they will serve with Malfoy. Their popularity with the other students suffers because of this. A week or so before exams, Harry hears Professor Quirrell, sounding as if he is being threatened. So, Harry heads to the library to tell Ron and Hermione. They are convinced Snape was threatening Quirrell and means to steal the Stone soon, and Hermione suggests they go to Dumbledore. Harry refuses, saying that they have no proof.

Back in the common room, Harry tells Hermione and Ron Voldemort’s in the forest and that Snape wants the Stone to help Voldemort restore his powers. Afterwards, going into his bed, Harry finds that his Invisibility Cloak has been returned to him.

  • Adapted Out:
  • Dudley’s friend Piers Polkiss who accompanies the Dursleys and Harry to the zoo.
  • Due to jump cuts, the Keeper of the reptile house and the zoo director. In the book Harry and the Dursleys get to the hut on the rock in a rowboat lent to them by a “toothless old man” he appears only in concept artwork for the film.
  • Madam Malkin, although her name appears on a sign.
  • Peeves the Poltergeist, although Rik Mayall was cast in the role and a scene was filmed, but it ended up being cut, and hasn’t even been included in the deleted scenes of any home media release. Ultimately Peeves never appeared in any of the films, nor was he even mentioned.
  • Irma Pince.
  • Firenze is the only centaur who appears Ronan and Bane are omitted. Bane later appears in Order of the Phoenix, but this would be Firenze’s only film appearance.
  • Poppy Pomfrey the Matron, but there is an unknown nurse in the Hospital wing scene at the end. It’s possible that this is supposed to be Madam Pomfrey, but this is not confirmed as it’s an uncredited non-speaking part.
  • Adaptation Induced Plothole: Has its own page.
  • Angry Guard Dog: Hagrid’s contribution to the protections around the Philosopher’s Stone is a large three-headed Cerberus dog named Fluffy. When Harry, Ron and Hermione first stumble upon the room that Fluffy is guarding, he growls and barks and chases them out of the room while trying to bite them. The trope is undermined by Fluffy’s tendency to fall asleep to the sound of music.

On this day in 1997 the UK became one with the wizarding world of Harry Potter when J.K Rowling published Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone. On the September 1st 1998, Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone was released in the US, but what is the difference between the two books?

In doing our research we have come across a few lists on this subject that count colloquial variations of words such as motorbike being used over motorcycle. We ignored these because we here at Vintro believe they are boring.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is a fantasy novel written by British author J. K. Rowling. The first novel in the Harry Potter series and Rowling’s debut novel, it follows Harry Potter, a young wizard who discovers his magical heritage on his eleventh birthday, when he receives a letter of acceptance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry makes close friends and a few enemies during his first year at the school, and with the help of his friends, he faces an attempted comeback by the dark wizard Lord Voldemort, who killed Harry’s parents, but failed to kill Harry when he was just 15 months old.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, along with the rest of the Harry Potter series, has been attacked by some religious groups and banned in some countries because of accusations that the novels promote witchcraft under the guise of a heroic, moral story. Other religious commentators have written that the book exemplifies important viewpoints, including the power of self-sacrifice and the ways in which people’s decisions shape their personalities. The series has been used as a source of object lessons in educational techniques, sociological analysis and marketing.

Why Did The First Harry Potter Book Get A Title Change In The Us

One of the ongoing anomalies of the Harry Potter series is the differing title of the first adventure. In America, the first outing of J.K. Rowling’s most famous creation is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, but pretty much everywhere else on the planet, it’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

So why did the name change?

It dates back to when the rights were sold for the first book: Scholastic Corporation bought the U.S. publishing rights for what was then known as Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, forking out a comparably high $105,000 for the privilege. Arthur A. Levine, who headed the Scholastic children’s imprint that would publish the book, knew he had a winner on his handshe just had some reservations about the title.

In Philip W. Errington’s biography on Rowling, he wrote that Levine wanted a title that said magic more overtly to American readers.” Levine was concerned that Philosopher’s Stone would feel “arcane,” so one of the proposed alternatives was Harry Potter and the School of Magic, which Rowling shot down. Eventually, the author suggested Sorcerer’s Stone, and that’s how the book is known in the U.S. market where Scholastic had the rights.

The change in title would also be reflected in the first film when it came out in 2001. However, the inconsistencies ended there as the remaining six books all had uniform names.

The final main difference is the title. The Scholastic Corporation made various differences from the name, front cover and countless colloquial modifications for marketing purposes and to appeal toward American audiences. Rowling put an end to the English word changes in the following books and expressed that she wished that she could have vetoed the name change with the US publisher.

Ever since the boa constrictor escaped from the zoo, Harry was locked in his cupboard for the longest time ever. When Harry is finally allowed out, it’s the beginning of the summer holidays. Even though he is not at school, Harry still can’t escape Dudley and his gang, who regularly visit the house. To keep out of their way, Harry usually wanders around Privet Drive. He is glad, however, that Dudley and Piers are going to Smeltings Academy, while Harry is going to attend Stonewall High. One day during the summer, Harry is told to get the post for Uncle Vernon. When Harry goes to get the mail, there are three letters: a postcard from Uncle Vernon’s sister, who is on holiday in the Isle of Wight, a letter that looks like a bill, and a letter for Harry. Harry takes the letter, studies the yellow parchment it is made of, then reads the address:

    Differences From The Book

Columbus repeatedly checked with Rowling to make sure he was getting minor details correct. Kloves described the film as being “really faithful” to the book. He added dialogue, of which Rowling approved. One of the lines originally included had to be removed after Rowling told him that it would directly contradict an event in the then-unreleased fifth Harry Potter novel Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

The book’s timeline is not enforced in the film. In the book, Harry’s eleventh birthday is in 1991. On the film set for 4 Privet Drive, Dudley’s certificates from primary school bear the year 2001.

Harry Potters Popularity Completely Changed The Publishing Industry And The Effect Spilled Over To Hollywood

Here are just two of the ways Harry Potter changed publishing, and how those changes affected the rest of pop culture:

    1) The books made it possible to publish long works aimed at children. Prior to Harry Potter, the accepted wisdom was that kids didnt have the attention span to read long books. And anyway, the thinking went, kids werent buying their own books. Their parents were paying for everything, and they would never be willing to pay an extra dollar or two for a longer book, with its extra printing and binding.

But after Harry Potter became an unstoppable cultural force, and it was clear that fans would keep buying thebooks no matter what, it started to expand. The last four volumes of the series are all doorstoppers that clock in at well over 700 pages each.

Publishers and childrens writers took notice. Booklist found that middle-grade novels expanded 115.5 percent between 2006 and 2016, the decade in which the Potter novels were at their longest.

The Outsiders reinvented young adult fiction. Harry Potter made it inescapable.

    2) Harry Potter made childrens literature an unstoppable force. Before Harry Potter, childrens literature was often considered an afterthought. Sales were falling. Children, analysts would say wistfully, just werent reading anymore.

Harry Potter did fine when it first emerged in the UK 20 years ago, winning a Smarties Award and garnering respectable sales for its publisher, Bloomsbury. But it only started to approach phenomenon levels when Scholastic bought the US publication rights for an astonishing $105,000, about 10 times more than the average foreign rights sale at the time.

The first Harry Potter book wasnt perfect, but it was magic

Arthur Levine, the Scholastic editor who acquired the books, had an excellent eye for British books that would work in the US, having already acquired the US rights to Redwall and His Dark Materials. But even he didnt know that Harry Potter would grow as big as it did. He just knew that he loved it and wanted to publish it. Scholastic President Barbara Marcus Barbara Marcus kept saying do you love it? and Arthur said yes, so we went for it, a Scholastic spokesperson recalled in 2002. I would have been willing to go further than that if I had to,” Levine said in 2007.

The $105,000 sale granted Harry Potter two things: a built-in publicity hook, and a big budget.

The hook came from the press: Newspapers featured articles about the little English book that had garnered such a huge sale. Reviewers wanted to know what kind of book would justify that kind of money. It was a curiosity, and as such, it was a story.
