Who Is Gay In Harry Potter

Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix

Gay Harry Potter

In the fifth book, Dumbledore is demoted from Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot, voted out of the Chairmanship of the International Confederation of Wizards, and is almost stripped of his Order of Merlin First Class due to his speeches regarding the return of Voldemort, although it is reported that he is unconcerned as long as he is not taken off the Chocolate Frog cards. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Magic does everything they can to discredit him and Harry mainly through the Daily Prophet. At the beginning of the book, Dumbledore enrages Fudge when he stops by at Harry’s hearing with a witness to ensure that he is not expelled. While Harry feels better when Dumbledore assists him, he becomes annoyed to the point of being angry that the headmaster refuses to speak to or even look at him.

Tom Felton Confirms Harry Potter And Draco Malfoy Were Totally Gay

Hes coming for J.K. Rowlings gig.

The year is 2002. Its summer, but sleepaway camp hasnt started yet, which means Im up at 2am and probably wont go to sleep until at least 5. Evanescences Fallen is playing softly from my E-machine, the glow from which lit up the signed Broadway posters hanging in my dark adolescent bedroom. I had been reading Harry Potter fan fiction for at least six hours and would likely go for another six before finally falling asleep and waking up to do it all over again.

My preferred slash pairing was, of course, Harry Potter/Draco Malfoy. Fanfiction is constantly turning enemies into lovers, mining text and subtext for every possibly clue that two characters who seemingly hate each other are actually desperately in love. As a newly post-pubescent queer, nothing was more captivating to me than these two characters professing their love, and nothing was hotter than their illicit rendezvous in the Astronomy Tower or the Room of Requirement or even the bank of the lake while the giant squid watched kinky!

And clearly I wasnt alone.

In an interview with AOL, Malfoy actor Tom Felton was reunited with castmates Rupert Grint , Warwick Davis , Evanna Lynch , Oliver Phelps and James Phelps for a game of Fact or Fanfiction. During the game, Felton revealed that hes seen plenty of explicit Harry Potter content online centered on Draco and Hermione . Ive seen some pictures, he explained. Some alarming ones.

Draco Malfoy Actor Believes Theory That Harry Potter Had A Crush On Him

Tom Felton has backed a long-held fan theory

Harry Potter star Tom Felton has thrown his weight behind a fan theory that Harry was infatuated with Draco Malfoy.

Felton, 31, was joined by fellow Harry Potter cast member Rupert Grint for a series of questions about ideas being fact or fiction.

When quizzed by AOL about a long-held theory that Harry had a crush on Malfoy, Felton responded amid giggles: Harry was constantly crushing on Draco he just couldnt hide it.

Grint suggested that Ron also lusted after Malfoy. I think he made quite an impression on Ron as well, he said, with a smirk.

It makes for an interesting theory. Malfoy and Potter are of course arch enemies, as are Weasley and Malfoy.

Fan-fiction over the years has imagined Draco to either be gay or in love with Hermione Granger .

Of course, theories surrounding the Harry Potter universe that author J. K. Rowling created remain loose. Rowling has become known for adding in previously unknown facets to her fiction much to the ire of one NME writer including revealing that there were two prominent Harry Potters in her self-created world.

Rowling has penned some brand new tales to continue the wizarding franchise, which will all be released as e-books by Pottermore Publishing.

George Weasley And Lee Jordan

Lee Jordan is the third wheel in his friendship with the Weasley twins. Except for their time on the quidditch pitch, Lee is always with the red-headed duo. While Fred makes it very obvious he’s into Angelina Johnson, asking her to the Yule Ball before George asks anyone, it’s very possible that George could have been more interested in Lee than any of the other witches he played quidditch with.

The pair spent so much time together, had so much in common, and it might have explained why George was the less outgoing of the Weasley twins.

How Rowling First Introduced Dumbledore’s Sexuality To The Harry Potter Canon

Is Harry Potter Gay?

In order to understand the current wave of backlash, it’s important to remember why Dumbledore’s sexuality is a topic of discussion at all.;

Within Rowling’s original seven “Harry Potter” books, there is no character who identifies as gay, bisexual, transgender, or anywhere on the spectrum of LGBTQ+.

But in 2007, several months after “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” was published, Rowling attended a Q&A at Carnegie Hall,;where she revealed that Dumbledore was gay.;

One person asked the author if Dumbledore ever fell in love himself, since he believed love was a prevailing power.;

“My truthful answer to you I always thought of Dumbledore as gay,” Rowling replied, according to “Harry Potter” news site The Leaky Cauldron. “Dumbledore fell in love with Grindelwald, and that added to his horror when Grindelwald showed himself to be what he was.”

Grindelwald, as “The Deathly Hallows” revealed, was a Dark wizard who lived next door to Dumbledore when both the men were teenagers. They spent a summer bonding over shared ambitions and concocting plans to overthrow the wizarding world’s statute of secrecy.

But their time together ended in tragedy when Dumbledore and Grindelwald got into a heated argument with the former’s brother, Aberforth. The ensuing fight ultimately killed Dumbledore’s younger sister, Ariana, and Grindelwald fled.

Harry Potter And The Half

In the sixth book, Dumbledore fetches Harry from Privet Drive and takes him to persuade Horace Slughorn to rejoin the Hogwarts staff. Harry notices that Dumbledore’s right hand is shrivelled and black. During the school year, Dumbledore teaches Harry of events in Voldemort’s past that he feels are of immense importance. Using the Pensieve, they visit the memories of others, which contain important information about Voldemort’s life and his genocidal rise to power. While using the pensieve, Harry sees a vision of Dumbledore’s first encounter with the young Tom Riddle; Dumbledore had known from the beginning that the boy was dangerous, but believed that Hogwarts would change him.

It is learned that Voldemort created six Horcruxes to gain immortality and that they must all be destroyed before Harry goes after the final piece of Voldemort’s soul in the Dark Lord’s body. Harry also repeatedly warns Dumbledore in most of their lessons that school bully Draco Malfoy is working for Voldemort. Dumbledore refuses to take any action against Draco, and instead tells Harry that he already knows more about what is happening than Harry does.

Albus/scorpius And The Heteronormative Wheel Of Time

The central relationship of Cursed Childs time-travel-heavy plot is the deep intimacy between Harrys son Albus and his best friend Scorpius, the son of Harrys rival, Draco Malfoy.

Albus/Scorpius has been a major fandom “ship,” or theoretical romantic relationship, since Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows was released, and Thorne and Tiffany have filled their plays script with references to their potentially queer relationship. In the play, the two boys are utterly devoted to each other. They exchange long, sensual hugs. Theyre jealous of competing relationships and unwilling to be separated from one another.

When Scorpius sees Albus talking to a girl, the script informs us, “part of him likes it and part of him doesnt.” At one point, a character notably compares Scorpius love for Albus to the canonically romantic feelings that Snape had for Harrys mother Lily, and Scorpius is emotionally informed, “You two belong together.” Its hard to read any of that as an endorsement of their platonic relationship.

Rose Granger-Weasley, the daughter of Hermione and Ron, shows up throughout Cursed Child to deliver plot exposition and serve as a target for Scorpiuss romantic overtures. At the end, without any development of their relationship whatsoever, she finally responds semipositively to his failed attempts to ask her out. By itself, this is a troubling version of the “wear the girl down” trope; coupled with the plays homoerotic subtext, its a train wreck.

Queer Characters In The Harry Potter Universe

We all remember the iconic moment when J.K. Rowling stunned crowds at Carnegie Hall in 2007 by admitting that shed always perceived Albus Dumbledore, the wisest and most powerful man in the wizarding world, as gay.;In the proceeding months, J.K. sustained hefty criticism from far-right, religious leaning people.;They claimed her admission of Dumbledores sexuality was an attempt to indoctrinate children with the gay agenda;by normalizing a sinful and disordered disposition.;It was simply too liberal. Now, nearly 11 years later, J.K. is under fire once again except this time its for not being liberal enough.

A few weeks ago,;David Yates, director of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindewald, revealed that Dumbledores sexuality would not be explicitly explored in the upcoming film. Many fans viewed this as blatant queer erasure and were rightfully infuriated by the avoidance of their love story.; .

However, in an attempt to reverse this most recent erasure, I am drawing attention to five possible queer characters that already exist in the Harry Potter universe! ;

Why Harry Potter Fans Hoped Dumbledore Being Gay Would Be Part Of The Fantastic Beasts Sequel

When Elisabeth Joffe, a longtime “Harry Potter” fan who identifies as queer, saw the first “Fantastic Beasts” movie when it premiered last year. She was pleasantly surprised when the movie’s ending shifted the focus toward Grindelwald and Dumbledore.;

“I was like, ‘This is fantastic,'” Joffe told INSIDER. “‘We’re actually going to see the manifestation of Dumbledore’s queer narrative come into focus in a very large arena.'”

Joffe said she didn’t have any expectations of seeing Dumbledore’s sexuality explored in the second “Fantastic Beasts” movie until the casting announcement was made for young-Dumbledore . His character could have been off-screen until the third or fourth movies, after all.

“I’m not looking for a gay rom-com out of the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ series,” Joffe said. “That is not my expectation here. But;the idea that are not essential to the narrative is surprising to me.”

Another fan we spoke to, Rebecca, identified herself as an LGBTQ ally whose been a part of the “Harry Potter” fandom for as long as she can remember.

“I am both furious and heartbroken,” Rebecca said. “Dumbledore’s sexuality is not an Easter egg for fans of the books it is an integral part of the character. It gives the story depth and meaning. To leave it out is to cheat the fans of a well-written movie. Everyone deserves to be represented.”

This is a particular sticking point: Rowling offered up Dumbledore’s sexuality as a post-book tidbit . But for some fans, that’s simply not good enough.

Mcgonagall And Another Character

While post Potter publication, J.K. Rowling did offer a full backstory for transfiguration professor, Minerva McGonagall, the books didn’t make her romantic leanings very clear. Many fans, early on, thought perhaps McGonagall and Dumbledore had been a couple at one point.

Yet, once it was revealed at Radio City Music Hall, that Dumbledore was in fact gay, it made more sense that perhaps McGonagall was gay as well. As underrepresented minorities in the Wizarding World the friendship between Dumbledore and McGonagall made even more sense.

Harry Potter Fandom And The Never

The recent focus on the queerness of Albus/Scorpius is part of a larger cultural shift in fandom toward nuanced representation and a desire for diverse characters and worldbuilding.

The online Harry Potter fandom the transformative, critical, markedly progressive branch of the fandom has spent years adapting Harrys reality to be more like our own. This has taken many forms, including queering certain characters, expanding the universe through fanfiction and fan films, and, especially within the last two years, a fandom-wide shift among fan artists toward interpreting Harry and Hermione as people of color. This last reading has become so pervasive in fan art on Tumblr that in some communities, depictions of Harry as a person of color are almost as frequent as depictions of him as written in canon.

I fucking love that Desi Harry Potter and black Hermione are just…real now.

lurrel

By contrast, in the last year alone, Rowling has endured backlash for her tone-deaf treatment of Native Americans in her new history of American magical society; for the notably all-white main cast of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them ; and for attempting to, as many fans saw it, “take credit” for writing a black Hermione into canon despite explicitly describing Hermione as a white character multiple times in the books.

Canon: You’re on record approving the casting of Emma Watson, and you do in fact describe her skin tone, twice.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows

Reacting to Harry Potter GAY SHIPS ft. Vegard

Rowling used several chapters in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows to reveal two major details concerning Dumbledore: his early life and his death. The book introduces his parents, Percival and Kendra Dumbledore, as well as his little sister, Ariana; his brother, Aberforth Dumbledore, was mentioned in previous books. At six years old, Ariana was attacked by three Muggle boys who had witnessed her performing magic. Because of this attack, Ariana was seriously traumatised and never able to control her magic again. Enraged, Percival attacked the Muggle boys , and was given a life sentence in Azkaban. After this, Kendra moved her family to the village of Godric’s Hollow. In one of her outbursts, Ariana accidentally killed Kendra at around the time that Albus completed his education. Albus became the head of the family and was forced to remain in his house with his sister while Aberforth completed his education.

Decades later, in 1945, Dumbledore finally defeated the now-Dark wizard Grindelwald, who had come to possess the Elder Wand. Grindelwald’s defeat made Dumbledore the master of the Elder Wand, which remained his until just before his death, when Draco used the Disarming Charm on him.

Dumbledore had another Hallow in his keeping since the death of James Potter: the Invisibility Cloak, which he had borrowed to examine. When James died, Dumbledore kept the cloak and decided to pass it on to Harry, James’ son.

Here Are All The Harry Potter Stars Who Have Responded To Jk Rowlings Transphobia

This post is also available in: Español

JK Rowling took a hammer to our childhoods sometime in the past few years by exposing herself as a TERF , and has since decided Pride Month 2020 would be the perfect time to double down on her hateful comments. Facing backlash from a series of ignorant tweets, Jo took to writing a manifesto on the topic on her personal webpage, tweeting the link with only the title TERF wars. Her harmful perspective does not bear repeating here or anywhere, for that matter but it has been refreshing to see so many Harry Potter stars distance themselves from JK Rowlings transphobia and respond with individual eloquence, nuance and thoughtfulness.

Heres a roundup of what several Harry Potter stars had to say about JK Rowlings transphobia:

1. Daniel Radcliffe

Founded in 1998, The Trevor Project focuses on crisis intervention and suicide prevention for LGBTQ youth. With both grace and sensitivity, Daniel Radcliffe penned a beautiful response to JK Rowlings transphobia, noting that any assertion that transwomen are anything but women goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or .

Daniel goes on to remind readers of the immense discrimination transgender and nonbinary folk face, that it is our duty to support them, and that there are always ways to educate ourselves and become better allies.

2. Katie Leung

They are not.

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire

In the fourth novel, Dumbledore introduces the Triwizard Tournament. He also serves as a judge during the entire event. When Harry’s name comes out of the Goblet of Fire, Dumbledore is not enraged, but remains calm; simply asking Harry whether he had himself, or had asked an older student to submit his name ” rel=”nofollow”>film version he does get angry to the point of manhandling Harry). When Harry answers no, he believes him. By the end of the book, Dumbledore’s fears are realized when Harry returns from his encounter with Voldemort clutching the dead body of Cedric Diggory and when Mad-Eye Moody takes Harry away from Dumbledore and to his office inside the castle. Dumbledore immediately becomes suspicious and heads straight towards Moody’s office with Minerva McGonagall and Severus Snape to save Harry and to interrogate Crouch. Afterwards, Dumbledore listens to Harry’s eyewitness account about Voldemort’s return. Harry though, only wakes up later to find Minister for Magic Cornelius Fudge in the hospital wing arguing with McGonagall and Dumbledore about the situation of Voldemort’s return and the consequences that would follow should Fudge remain in denial of this fact.
