How Long Is First Harry Potter Movie

The Yates Era Since 2007

This week marks 20 years since first Harry Potter film

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was only the second film directed by David Yates , who was better known until then for his political dramas such as State Of Play .

However, Yates was so successful with his vision of Harry Potter films that he went on to direct all subsequent Potter movies as well as all three of the Fantastic Beasts films.

Ten Years Of Making Harry Potter Films By Cast And Crew

Tanya Seghatchian, co-producer/executive producer, Harry Potter 1-4: I started working with David Heyman at Heyday Films in 1997. We had a deal with Warner Bros to be the eyes and ears of the studio in the UK. I remember a friend of mine, Tony Garnett, who produced Kes, saying to me: “Listen, this deal will only last if you find Warners the equivalent of the Bond franchise.” I read an article on a book that was due to be published, about a boy who discovers he’s a wizard. It said it was going to be one in a series so that’s a franchise. I rang Christopher Little, Jo Rowling’s agent, to introduce myself and win him over if I could.

David Heyman, producer, HP 1-8: When the proof copy of the first book came in, it sat for a few weeks on my bottom shelf low priority.

Nisha Parti, production consultant, HP1: We’d been running the company for a while and hadn’t found the big thing Warner Bros was hoping for. There was a slight gloom in the air about that.

DH: Each Friday, we’d decide what everyone would read over the weekend.

NP: I read the first Harry Potter at home on a Saturday morning. It was brilliant a huge, original story which felt so visual and filmic. I came in raving about it on Monday morning. David asked what it was called and I told him: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

DH: I said: “I’m not sure about the title.” But I read it and fell in love the world Jo had created was so rich. Warner Bros were not immediately enthusiastic.

Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban

Arguably, the top critically acclaimed movie in the franchise came in 2004 with Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. While Columbus made the movie mostly about children discovering magic, and kept it solidly in the young adult genre, Alfonso Cuarón took the helm for this one and made one of the most adult films in the series.

Sirius Black, a man who was held at the horrific Azkaban prison, was introduced as Harry’s godfather, and the film changed the tone drastically into something extraordinary. Cuarón only directed one movie, but was the most acclaimed of the franchise’s directors, winning two Oscars for Best Director following this movie.

Contest: Game Of Chance

There are three wide releases, but only two of them have any chance of becoming more than a midlevel hit. Free Birds is a digitally animated family film that has a very timely release, but it is also a second-tier CG animated film. Ender’s Game is a $110 million film based on a book aimed at young adults. It is yet another film trying to tap into the vacuum left behind by Harry Potter. I don’t think either of them will be big hits, but one of them has to be the target film. I think Free Birds will have better legs, but that Ender’s Game will have a better opening. As such, it is the target film for this week’s box office prediction contest. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office number for Ender’s Game. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film’s opening 3-day weekend box office , regardless if they go over or not, will win a copy of The Conjuring on Blu-ray Combo Pack.

Friday Estimates: Fantastic Dominates Charts But With Just $297 Million

As expected, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them easily earned first place on Friday. However, it only managed $29.7 million, which was well below expectations. This is the worst opening day in the Harry Potter franchise since The Chamber of Secrets. The reviews are weaker than the franchise as a whole, but its CinemaScore is an A and thats roughly average for the previous 8 Harry Potter films. The film should still earn between $70 million and $75 million over the weekend, depending on if the high CinemaScore can overcome the Fanboy Effect. I would choose to be optimistic, but that hasnt worked out this weekend. More…

Note: This article discusses conversations and other details from Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts.

Unless youre in possession of one of those trusty time turner necklaces that Hermione Granger found so useful, time marches on just as relentlessly for the wizarding community as for us muggles. And, so, November marked two decades since the first Harry Potter movie was released.

Warner Bros. celebrated the occasion by releasing a behind-the-scenes retrospective documentary of sorts titled Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts. It will stream on HBO Max at midnight Pacific time on New Years Day.

The special finds much of the original cast including the usual suspects like Daniel Radcliffe , Emma Watson , Rupert Grint and Tom Felton along with heavy hitters such as Gary Oldman , Ralph Fiennes and Helena Bonham Carter reminiscing with each other while visiting sets from the eight films.

Chris Columbus, Alfonso Cuarón, Mike Newell, and David Yates, all the directors who worked on the series, show up as well.

Here are a few takeaways.

Every Harry Potter Movie Ranked

As with the Harry Potter books, opinions on which entries in the series are the best are incredibly varied and subjective. As a result, ranking the Harry Potter movies by their IMDb user scores reveals a remarkable consistency in fan response, with all eight instalments clustered between 7.4 and 8.1 out of 10.

The two Fantastic Beasts movies are noticeably the least loved releases spawned from JK Rowling’s Wizarding World, a fact perhaps reflected by the second movie’s near 20% drop at the box office compared to its predecessor .

The more successful of the two, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, made less money than all-but-one of the Potter movies . But, seeing as it had 12 years of inflation on its side, its debatable whether it actually outperformed the earlier film.

Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them

Five years after the end of the Harry Potter franchise, the world came roaring back to the big screen. This time, it wasn’t based on books of any kind but was instead a story J.K. Rowling created for the big screen. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them told the story of Newt Scamander, whose books about fantastic beasts Harry studied in school.

Weekend Estimates: Ralph Slips Still Strong Hannah Tops Expectations Still Soft

Can You Ace This Quiz On The First Harry Potter Movie ...

Ralph Breaks the Internet will retain top spot on the weekend box office chart with an estimated $25.8 million for a two-week total of $119.3 million. Granted, this is lower than we predicted, but not so much lower than anyone at Disney should be panicking. Internationally, the film added an estimated $33.7 million in 27 markets, lifting its international total to $87.7 million after two weeks of release. Its only major market opening of the weekend was the U.K. where it reportedly earned $5.2 million. This is less than Wreck-It Ralph opened with, but that film debuted during the school holidays, so it got a boost. Ralph Breaks the Internet should have longer than average legs thanks to Christmas, but I dont think it will match its predecessor in this market. More…

Jk Rowling Or The Lack Thereof

When WarnerMedia first announced details of the special, one name was conspicuously absent from the cast list: J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter books. At the time, both Rowling and Warner Bros. declined The Washington Posts request for comment. As it turns out, she is in the special albeit for about a minute in a couple of exceedingly brief and insubstantial clips gleaned from archival footage.

While her lack of participation in the special remains unexplained, its not difficult to guess whats going on here. Rowling has come under fire in recent years for her statements regarding the trans community. If sex isnt real, theres no same-sex attraction. If sex isnt real, the lived reality of women globally is erased. I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives. It isnt hate to speak the truth, she tweeted in June 2020, earning her the moniker TERF and losing support from many of her fans.

As shes continued making similar comments, many spinoff properties of the Potter universe have distanced themselves from her. Both U.S. Quidditch and Major League Quidditch announced they will be changing their names, and youd practically need an electron microscope to see her name in the trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, the newest movie in the spinoff series.

Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts begins streaming Saturday at 3 a.m. EST on HBO Max.

In 2000, after a seven-month search, lead actor Daniel Radcliffe was discovered by producer David Heyman and writer Steve Kloves seated just behind them in a theatre. In Heyman’s own words, “There sitting behind me was this boy with these big blue eyes. It was Dan Radcliffe. I remember my first impressions: He was curious and funny and so energetic. There was real generosity too, and sweetness. But at the same time he was really voracious and with hunger for knowledge of whatever kind.”

Radcliffe had already established himself as an actor in the 1999 BBC television production of David Copperfield in which he played the title role’s childhood years. Heyman persuaded Radcliffe’s parents to allow him to audition for the part of Harry Potter, which involved Radcliffe being filmed. Rowling was enthusiastic after viewing Radcliffe’s filmed test, saying she didn’t think there was a better choice for the part of Harry Potter.

Also in 2000, the then unknown British actors Emma Watson and Rupert Grint were selected from thousands of auditioning children to play the roles of Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, respectively. Their only previous acting experience was in school plays. Grint was eleven years old and Watson ten at the time they were cast.
