Harry Potter And The Sorcerers Stone Audiobook Jim Dale Summary

Its the story of Harry Potter, an orphan raised by his aunt and uncle because his parents killed him when he was little. Harry was not loved by his uncle and aunt, but everything changed when he was invited to the School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in Hogwarts and he learned he was a magician.

Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone is an interesting start to Harrys journey to reconcile his past and future. This is the first book Rowling has written and is praised for creating great characters and the complete magical universe that leads todays world. Almost immediately a critical and popular success, it was translated into about 60 languages. The later six novels about Harrys other adventures in Hogwarts are just as famous. Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone was also a hit.

It has almost been ten years since the Dursleys awoke to find Harry Potter lying on their doorstep. Privet Drive and the Dursleys’ house has not changed since that day. The only difference was the pictures of Dudley Dursley‘s aging. There is no sign that Harry lives there. However, in the cupboard under the stairs, Harry indeed sleeps. Petunia comes to his door and wakes him with a shrill voice.

Harry is trying to think about the dream he had been having. It was about a flying motorcycle, and Harry thinks he had the same dream before. Aunt Petunia tells him to make bacon, as she wanted everything special for Dudley’s 11th birthday. Harry dresses and goes into the kitchen where the table is covered in Dudley’s presents. Harry thinks that because he lives in a cupboard, he is small and skinny. All he has to wear are Dudley’s old clothes.

Dudley comes in and begins to count his presents, only to find 37, which was one fewer than the year before. Aunt Petunia states they are going to buy him two new presents while they are out. Vernon tells Petunia that Arabella Figg, the next-door neighbor, has broken her leg and cannot take Harry when they go to the Zoo. They can’t think of anyone, so Harry has to go with them.

A new, separate game Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was made for newer consoles in 2003 by Warthog Games, 2 years after the original versions. Its gameplay differed greatly from the other versions, followed the film far more closely than the other games, though it was criticised for reusing the spells and world map from the Chamber of Secrets version of the game.

At school, Harry begins his training as a wizard and learns more about his past. After retrieving a remembrall while riding on a broomstick, for his classmate Neville Longbottom, Harry is appointed seeker of the Gryffindor Quidditch team.

Harry, Ron and Hermione believe that one of their teachers, Professor Snape, is planning to steal the Philosopher’s Stone, a magical object which grants the user immortality, and set out to stop him. The three face a series of obstacles that protect the stone, including a three-head dog, surviving a deadly plant, catching a flying key, playing a life-sized game of Chess and choosing the correct potion to get through a magical fire. Harry, now alone, expects to face Snape but instead finds Professor Quirrell, the Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. Quirrell removes his turban and reveals that Voldemort was living on the back of his head. Harry retrieves the stone and Voldemort tries to get it from him but touching him burns Quirrell’s skin. Harry passes out from the struggle of the battle.

There has never been a film or series that sent me on such an emotional roller coaster. The series actually fills empty areas of your life and can even be replaced. it can be one and a good or bad thing, personally the most emotional thing for me is that it does a bit of both. I was attached to many characters, even those who could not be understood. I fell in love with warts and characters for only a few days, I have never experienced anything like this in my life. When I finished the series, I was really sad and sad that there were no more movies I could watch. To improve my feeling of being there, and see the series as often as possible to remind me of all the characters and Hogwarts, my favorite place. Harry Potters fan really thrilled and welcomed me. I feel so connected to the characters that its not real. I called for a few days knowing I couldnt go to Hogwarts, marry Draco Malfoy, or be a close friend of Harry, Harmony, and Ron. When I finished the series, I never felt full but empty. You will also notice a change in mood and style and the 2nd film and the 3rd, which continues, is very emotional for me , but dont forget that it ends well! Believe me! Im not someone who is a head baker or Im amazed by things like this, but Harry Potter is very different!

Chapter : The Boy Who Lived

Vernon and Petunia Dursley, who have a one year old son named Dudley, are proud to think they are the most normal people on Privet Drive. Vernon works at a drill company called Grunnings, while Petunia does housework. One day, when Vernon is leaving for work, he sees a tabby cat reading a map and, later, reading the street sign. He then figures it is looking at the sign, not reading it. Later in the day, he sees people in cloaks talking in hushed voices. When he’s sitting in his office, a swarm of owls fly past his window, but he takes no notice.

On his break he goes to a bakery to get a bun and sees a group of extravagantly-cloaked figures. Even though they are speaking in hushed voices, he overhears some of their conversation, which includes a mention of “the Potters and their son Harry.” Vernon finds this horrifying as the Potters were the family of Petunia’s sister. Vernon and Petunia would be embarrassed if people found out they were related to the Potters, as the Potters were in some way strange. When he leaves his work, he bumps into a very small, similarly-cloaked man, who tells Vernon someone called You-Know-Who has been defeated and that even Muggles like Vernon should be celebrating. Vernon does not know what a Muggle is, but is still offended that the man would call him one.

Mr. Dursley, a well-off Englishman, notices strangehappenings on his way to work one day. Discovering The Story World And Magic As A Metaphor

J. K. Rowling does a great job writing this story with an omniscient third-person narrative, but still keeping the narrator wherever Harry is for a major part of this book. This makes the readers fascination and interest in the world of magic as new and real as Harrys. We are introduced to several facts and significant peculiarities of the world of magic, all of which seem very consistently developed, adding authenticity to it.

While there are a lot of similarities between the real world and the world of magic, the differences are usually peculiar and downright funny at times. Platform nine and three quarters, running through a brick wall, ghosts roaming freely and talking to living people, and many other peculiarities add to the charm of creating an interesting story world. One could go on to theorize that calling non-magic people muggles and portraying the Dursleys as ordinary people who hate things like magic has a metaphorical purpose.

It furthers the cause and appeals to the readers to be more imaginative and creative. Magic is a metaphor for imagination in this case. The Dursleys are scared of anything out of the ordinary. They spend their entire day doing mundane tasks they assign meaning to and criticize almost anything and anyone that doesnt fit their design.

“I never thought to look in here!” she whispered excitedly. “I got this out of the library weeks ago for a bit of light reading.”

Harry finds it hard to forget the image of his parents. Quidditch practice continues on even harder and it is revealed that Snape will referee the next match. Malfoy performs a leg-locker curse on Neville, Harry tells Neville he is “Worth twelve of Malfoy.” Harry suddenly remembers that he read the name Nicolas Flamel on a chocolate frog card, which reminds Hermione that she had seen the name in a book she picked up from the library, and the team discover that he was a famous alchemist who is the only known maker of the Sorcerer’s Stone, which powers include turning any metal to gold and producing the Elixir of Life, a potion that can make the drinker immortal.

Filch takes Harry and Hermione to McGonagall’s office, where they meet Neville. McGonagall, very disappointed, takes 50 points each from the three of them and gives them all detention, which they will serve with Malfoy. Their popularity with the other students suffers because of this. A week or so before exams, Harry hears Professor Quirrell, sounding as if he is being threatened. So, Harry heads to the library to tell Ron and Hermione. They are convinced Snape was threatening Quirrell, and means to steal the Stone soon, and Hermione suggests they go to Dumbledore. Harry refuses, saying there is no proof.

Back in the common room, Harry and Hermione tell Ron what happened. Afterwards, going into his bed, Harry finds that his Invisibility Cloak has been returned to him.

Sacrifice In Harry Potter

Sacrifice is an essential part of this novel. Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone uses sacrifice to define both friendship and love. Harrys parents die because they sacrifice themselves to protect Harry. Ron sacrifices himself while playing Wizard chess. Several people who fought in the war against Voldemort sacrificed themselves for the well-being of the collective community.

The trope of sacrifice plays a major role in setting up differences in morality between the good and the evil. As Dumbledore points out to Harry, Voldemort does not understand love. The fact that Harry understands love and values it, sets a specific difference in choices that Harry and Lord Voldemort make.

Harry is willing to sacrifice himself when he takes over the task of protecting the Philosophers Stone. On the contrary, Voldemort uses others for his selfish motives. This stark difference between willing to sacrifice oneself and using others as a shield to protect oneself, makes all the difference and definitively separates good and evil in this book.

Why Was Harry Potter Banned

Harry Potter was banned in a catholic school in Nashville, Tennessee because of fear of evil spirits. Some other places have also banned Harry Potter books for similar religious fears. Some religious leaders were concerned that the spells and enchantments mentioned in the book were real and that they could summon evil spirits and dark magic.

Several commentators have noted that personal identity is a strong theme in the book and that it addresses issues of racism through the treatment of non-human, non-magical, and non-living people. Scholastic Corporation bought the U.S. rights at the Bologna Book Fair in April 1997 for US$105,000, an unusually high sum for a children’s book. Scholastic’s Arthur Levine thought that “philosopher” sounded too archaic for readers and after some discussion , the American edition was published in September 1998 under the title Rowling suggested, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Rowling later said that she regretted this change and would have fought it if she had been in a stronger position at the time.Philip Nel has pointed out that the change lost the connection with alchemy and the meaning of some other terms changed in translation, for example from “crumpet” to “muffin“. While Rowling accepted the change from both the British English “mum” and Seamus Finnigan’s Irish variant “mam” to the American variant “mom” in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, she vetoed this change in the later books, which was then reversed in later editions of Philosopher’s Stone. However, Nel considered that Scholastic’s translations were considerably more sensitive than most of those imposed on British English books of the time and that some other changes could be regarded as useful copyedits. Since the UK editions of early titles in the series were published months prior to the American versions, some American readers became familiar with the British English versions owing to having bought them from online retailers.
