The Harry Potter Cast: A Look Back Then And Now

BySarah El-Mahmoudlast updated 08 March 2019

Its been almost 20 years since the first movie adaptation of J.K. Rowlings Wizarding World hit the big screen in the form of 2001s Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone. Since then, the fantasy franchise has spun seven sequels, a completely new film series called Fantastic Beasts, and a highly popular land in Universal Studios.

The phenomenon has been around for nearly a generation, and while the main cast of the classic series have had close to a decade to grow apart from with their iconic roles, its always magical to look back at whats changed between their first trip to Hogwarts to today. Theres been a mix of glo ups, sad passings and exciting projects between the Harry Potter film family between then and now. Lets take a look:

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire

In this movie, the fourth one, the main aspiring wizard enters a grand competition between three different magical schools. Instead of moving up to a different school, he stays in the same Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for another four years, or at least thats whats expected.

Secretly, he suspects a plot but doesnt quite know what will happen in the end.

This is when the main character turns fourteen going on fifteen years old, which is the age that highschool students enter freshman year in the US.

He starts to learn more about the world of spellcraft and gets into some more advanced topics.

He also develops quite a few new relationships.

Radcliffe may forever be the Boy Who Lived in all of our hearts, but since the Harry Potter franchise came to an end, he’s made a conscious effort to explore a variety of genres, from horror and rom-coms to period pieces and biopics . In recent years, he’s returned to fantasy as Igor in 2015’s Victor Frankenstein, starred in the intense drama Imperium, and went indie with Swiss Army Man.

Radcliffe has also made his mark on the stage, with critically acclaimed runs in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and The Cripple of Inishmaan on Broadway. During his downtime, Radcliffe works with The Trevor Project , writes poetry and unwinds by playing fantasy football and learning complex rap lyrics.

Differences From The Book

Harry Potter Real Cast Real Ages And Relationships

Prisoner of Azkaban was, at the time of publication, the series’ longest book. The increasing plot complexity necessitated a looser adaptation of the book’s finer plot lines and back-story. The connection between Harry’s parents and the Marauder’s Map is only briefly mentioned, as is Remus Lupin‘s association to the map. Additionally, it was never mentioned who the Marauders were or who the nicknames Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs referred to. Some exposition was removed for dramatic effect: both the Shrieking Shack and Scabbers the rat are mentioned only very briefly in the film, while they receive a more thorough coverage in the novel. Most of Sirius Black‘s back story is also cut, with no mention of how he escaped from Azkaban.

On account of pace and time considerations, the film glosses over detailed descriptions of magical education. Only one Hippogriff, Buckbeak, is seen, and only Malfoy and Harry are seen interacting with the Hippogriff during Care of Magical Creatures lessons, and most other lessons, including all of Snape‘s Potions classes, were cut from the film. The Fidelius Charm’s complicated description is removed entirely from the film, with no explanation given of exactly how Sirius is supposed to have betrayed the Potters to Lord Voldemort. Many of this scene’s lines are redistributed amongst Cornelius Fudge and Minerva McGonagall in compensation, McGonagall’s exposition of the Animagus transformation is instead given by Snape.

Will Harry Potter Cast Return For Cursed Child Trilogy In 2026

J.K. Rowling denies new claims by historian Jim Hill that a Cursed Child trilogy is being planned with the original cast.

Rowling also decided to continue the actual Harry Potter storyline with the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Most fans haven’t been able to see the actual play, but the transcript was made available for purchase and instantly became a bestseller. Now, some new rumors are swirling that Warner Bros. is hoping to turn the play into a movie trilogy in a few years. But J.K. Rowling continues to claim that isn’t the case despite mounting evidence.

Recently, journalist and historian Jim Hill guested on the Unofficial Universal Orlando Podast.
