The Wizarding World Finally Believes That Voldemort Is Back

One of the biggest issues Harry and Dumbledore face in the beginning of “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” is that the Ministry of Magic and the rest of the wizarding world do not believe the young wizard’s claims that Voldemort has returned. After “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” and the death of Cedric Diggory , that still isn’t enough for Cornelius Fudge , the current Minister for Magic. It takes the battle at the end of the film between the Death Eaters and the Order of the Phoenix to truly convince them of the truth. Of course, they’re ones to be in denial until they see it for themselves.

Like any other politician, Fudge initially convinces himself that Dumbledore has some machinations about wanting to be the Minister for Magic himself, and so he believes that the claim that Voldemort has returned has to do with that. Of course, it also seems like Fudge is too scared to really do anything, and to actually face the possibility that the Dark Lord is back is too much for him. In the end, his avoidance and denial still leads to his downfall in politics, as Fudge resigns from his position as Minister after admitting the truth about Voldemort’s return. This makes Harry and Dumbledore happy, as people appear to finally be taking the threat seriously.

The 9 Most Surprising Harry Potter Movie Moments

  • In , when Harry is looking in the Pensieve, Igor Karkaroff accuses Barty Crouch Jr. of torturing Frank and Alice Longbottom. In The Order of The Phoenix, after a DA meeting, Neville tells Harry it was Bellatrix Lestrange. Both statements are in fact true, as according to the books Frank and Alice Longbottom were tortured by a group of Death Eaters, which included both Barty Crouch Jr. and Bellatrix Lestrange.
  • : This connection between me and Voldemort… what if the reason for it is that I am becoming more like him? I just feel so angry, all the time. What if after everything that I’ve been through, something’s gone wrong inside me? What if I’m becoming bad?

: I want you to listen to me very carefully, Harry. You’re not a bad person. You’re a very good person, who bad things have happened to. Besides, the world isn’t split into good people and Death Eaters. We’ve all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That’s who we really are.

Indeed, your failure to understand that there are things much worse than death has always been your greatest weakness
Dumbledore, to Voldemort

Dumbledore arrives and swiftly captures the Death Eaters, with only Bellatrix Lestrange managing to escape. Lord Voldemort appears as Harry was fighting Belatrix and tries to kill Harry, but he is saved by Dumbledore and an intense duel erupts between the two mighty wizards, with Dumbledore visibly dominating the duel, as he calmly overcomes all of Voldemort’s attempts before eventually imprisoning him in a cocoon of water, forcing him to disapparate. Left with the realisation Dumbledore surpasses him, Voldemort, in desperation, attempts to possess Harry to cause him unbearable pain in the hope that Dumbledore will kill Harry both to spare him and to kill Voldemort. However, Dumbledore does not act on the bait and in an ironic twist of fate Harry’s grief for Belatrix’s murder of Sirius, or love, allows him to cause Voldemort unmeasurable pain and forces him out. Ministry of Magic employees arrive in time to see the Dark Lord before he disapparates, taking Bellatrix with him. Cornelius Fudge finally admits Voldemort has returned and Harry’s interview with Rita Skeeter is reprinted in the Daily Prophet.

Because you are not nearly as angry with me as you ought to be. If you are to attack me, as I know you are close to doing, I would like to have thoroughly earned it.

What Is Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix About And Why Should I Care

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)

Harry Potter is a wonder: he’s a wizard, he’s rich, and he has loyal friends. At age fifteen he’s faced down the most evil wizard in the world no fewer than four times. And despite his awful early childhood, he still seems to have basic faith in right and wrong: very impressive.

Yet, even Harry Potter famous, beloved Harry Potter spends much of Book 5 getting trashed by his peers. Now, of course, Harry’s life is part of a massive struggle between good and evil. It makes sense that the bullying he suffers is on a giant scale, with his new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, the Daily Prophet newspaper, and the Ministry of Magic all piling on him at the same time. But while Harry’s experience of bullying may be more extreme than many of ours, we still totally recognize with his bitterness and resentment at being laughed at by his classmates.

A lot of Harry’s bad feeling during Book 5 his sense that he’s being singled out, picked on, and persecuted we have experienced in some form or another throughout high school. Even for a famous boy wizard, it seems to be an unavoidable part of the high school experience that someone will laugh at you or try to make you feel ridiculous.

You are quite right, of course, Professor Umbridge. As High Inquisitor you have every right to dismiss my teachers. You do not, however, have the authority to send them away from the castle. Differences From The Book

At 766 pages in the British edition and 870 in the American edition, Order of the Phoenix is the longest book in the Harry Potter series, however the film is the second shortest. Screenwriter Michael Goldenberg described his task to cut down the novel as searching for “the best equivalent way to tell the story. My job was to stay true to the spirit of the book, rather than to the letter”. Goldenberg said that Rowling told him, the producers, and Yates that “she just wanted to see a great movie, and gave permission to take whatever liberties felt needed to take to translate the book into a movie she would love”. Cutting down the book to meet the time frame of the film, Goldenberg explained, became “clearer when figured out that the organising principle of the screenplay was to narrate Harry’s emotional journey”. He and Yates “looked for every opportunity to get everything could in there. And where couldn’t, to sort of pay homage to it, to have it somewhere in the background or to feel like it could be taking place off-screen”.

Rita Skeeter, the journalist played by Miranda Richardson in Goblet of Fire, was also removed. In the book, Hermione blackmails her into writing an article that supports Harry as the rest of the Wizarding world denies his claims. Richardson noted that “it’s never gonna be the book on film, exactly. … They’ll take certain aspects from the book and make it something that they hope is going to be commercial and that people want to see”.

It becomes clear Umbridge is really there to spy on and take control of the school, and is soon appointed High Inquisitor, arbitrarily imposing rules and regulations . She also harbours racial hatred for “half-breeds”, such as centaurs, werewolves, merpeople and similar creatures. Umbridge starts to observe the professors in class, where she apparently intends to evaluate all teachers.

What Parents Need To Know

Parents need to know that, as has been the case with each succeeding movie in the Harry Potter series , Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix has its main characters taking on bigger challenges, with darker themes and more intense danger. The climactic battle scenes with Lord Voldemort and his minions are downright frightening. Spoiler alert: There’s a very upsetting death of someone near and dear to Harry . As a result, Harry grows even more introspective and angry, sometimes demonstrating a lack of self-control and inability to communicate. At the very least, he does enjoy his first kiss, and Ron and Hermione continue their flirtatious bickering. Harry, his friends, and the Order of the Phoenix members act in a brave, selfless manner, demonstrating perseverance and teamwork. The movie’s key lessons are that it’s your choices and the actions you take that define you and that friends, family, and love make you more powerful than even the strongest evil.
