Harry Potter: Who Was Worse James Potter Or Severus Snape

In the Harry Potter series, fans often debate the morality of mortal enemies James Potter and Severus Snape. Was James Potter a bully? Who was worse?

Severus Snape And The Order Of The Phoenix

Dumbledore assigned Snape yet another task, and it may have been Snapes biggest mission yet: to hang out with Harry Potter. Alright, it was actually to teach Harry Occlumency, the delicate art of defending your mind against intrusion specifically, Lord Voldemorts intrusion. It was difficult magic to master, and required an immense amount of mental control.

He may as well have been teaching a Flobberworm to tap-dance.

Far worse than being useless, however, was Harry being an impertinent sneak the kind who stuck his head into your Pensieve when you were out of the room. Who does that?!

Nonetheless, he aided Harry multiple times throughout the year: giving Dolores Umbridge fake Veritaserum lying that he had run out of it when pressed for more passing on Harrys message about Siriuss capture to the Order of the Phoenix and therefore deducing that he had walked into a trap at the Ministry.

Despite all his efforts, everyone still thought he was the worst.

Who Is The Real Father Of Harry

James Potter is Harrys real father. Plenty of characters mention to Harry that he looks just like James. The messy black hair and the glasses are the common traits that are mentioned the most.

Even Harry, who doesnt remember his father, can recognize James Potter without any doubts in the Mirror of Erised. We can all agree that Harrys heart would not lie to him and show him his real father.

Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets

Snape has a minor role in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, where he helps Gilderoy Lockhart oversee Hogwarts’ short-lived Duelling Club, but he has little interaction with the main plot. It is while attending the Duelling Club that Harry learns the Expelliarmus spell, which plays a significant role in later books, by seeing Snape use it.

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire

Snape’s role in the fourth novel, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, is not substantially different from that of the previous three books. He is apoplectic when Harry is unexpectedly entered into the Triwizard Tournament. Later Harry accidentally falls into Dumbledore’s Pensieve and views memories of several Death Eater trials from years before. At one point, Snape is named as a Death Eater by Igor Karkaroff, but Dumbledore comes to Snape’s defence, claiming that although Snape had indeed been a Death Eater, he changed sides before Voldemort’s downfall and turned spy against him. Later, Dumbledore assures Harry that Snape’s reformation is genuine, though he refuses to tell Harry how he knows this, saying the information “is a matter between Professor Snape and myself”.

At the end of the book, Dumbledore attempts to convince a disbelieving Minister for Magic, Cornelius Fudge, that Voldemort has returned. As proof, Snape willingly shows Fudge the restored Dark Mark on his arm. He is subsequently sent on a secret mission by Dumbledore. This mission, as had been implied in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and revealed in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, was to rejoin the Death Eaters and spy on Voldemort as a re-doubled agent, while pretending to spy on Dumbledore on behalf of Voldemort.

What If Snape Had Been Harry’s FATHER? – Harry Potter Theory Fan-Fic

In the second chapter of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Bellatrix Lestrange and Narcissa Malfoy visit Snape at his home in Spinner’s End. Narcissa’s son Draco has been given a difficult task by Voldemort, and Narcissa swears Snape to an Unbreakable Vow that he will protect Draco, help him complete Voldemort’s task, and finish the task himself if Draco fails. When questioned by Bellatrix about his loyalties, Snape says he has been working for Voldemort ever since Voldemort’s return, and explains his actions in the previous books in that light. He points out that gaining Dumbledore’s trust and protection has kept him out of Azkaban and free to operate on Voldemort’s behalf.

Later, during a fight with Draco, Harry casts one of the Prince’s spells marked “For Enemies,” and is horrified by the devastating wounds it inflicts to Draco’s face and chest. Snape rushes to the scene and heals Draco, then interrogates Harry regarding the spell, using Legilimency to extract the source of Harry’s knowledge from Harry’s mind. When Snape insists that Harry show him his Potions textbook, Harry hides the Prince’s book and gives him Ron Weasley‘s book instead. As punishment for the attack and knowing Harry is lying about the textbook, Snape assigns Harry detention during the final Quidditch match of the year.

Snape: An Obsessive Pathetic & Creepy Stalker

Snape, for those who choose to see only his dark side, is berated for obsessing over someone who didn’t love him back. Redditor kerrimustkill thinks that he was nothing but “obsessive and pathetic and ultimately more about his guilt,” and as a creepy stalker, the Redditor feels he got what he deserved.

This goes against the grain of millions of fans who have romanticized Snape’s feelings for Lily. What the surly professor felt for his childhood friend, probably the only real friend he ever had, was a deep love, and of course, he felt responsible for her death, as he was the one who had informed the Dark Lord about the prophecy. However, to consider Snape an obsessive stalker just because he had loved the one person his entire life might seem like a bit much for a large part of the fandom. It wasn’t as if he followed her around for years.

Severus Snape Had A Troubled Childhood

Born to Muggle Tobias Snape and witch Ellen Prince, young Severus Snape has a difficult childhood due to a strained and often angry relationship between his parents, which Harry personally witnesses when he accidentally glimpses one of Snape’s private childhood memories. However, Snape’s life takes a turn when he meets a young Lily Evans, who lives nearby. Quickly, the two become close friends, and Snape tells Lily, a Muggle-born witch, about Hogwarts and their future there together.

Despite Snape and Lily’s bond, they still argue, especially when her sister, Petunia Harry’s bitter Muggle aunt gets involved. Ultimately, the tension between Snape, Lily, and Petunia comes to a head when Petunia, jealous of Snape’s and Lily’s respective magical abilities, spies on the two friends. When Snape accidentally injures Petunia using magic, she calls Lily a “freak,” while Lily reveals that she and Snape saw a letter that Petunia wrote, begging Hogwarts to accept her as a student. By then, the damage is done, and Lily and Petunia are divided forever, thanks partly to Snape.

But as some fans and even Rowling herself were quick to point out, he’s neither good nor bad.

He Was Into The Dark Arts

James certainly wasn’t perfect and could be a complete jerk sometimes, but when James was being the classic school bully, Snape was beginning to involve himself in the Dark Arts.

Severus went down a very grim road very early on in his life, which doesn’t say anything positive about him as a person. He even wrote off his friend Mulciber using such spells on a fellow classmate as “just a laugh”, something that absolutely horrified Lily.

He Relied Too Much On His Friends

It’s great that the marauders were closer than brothers and would literally die to protect one another. But James was probably a little too reliant on his friends.

Not only did making Wormtail his Secret Keeper have fatal consequences, but honestly, putting his life, as well as the lives of his wife and baby, in the hands of his pals was too great a risk for the Potters and the marauders both.

His Final Words Differ In The Final Movie Compared To The Book

13 little

Snape’s death is one of the most emotional moments in the series.

In the film, as Harry is holding a dying Snape in his arms, the professor uses his final words to repeat a line we’ve heard from several other characters throughout the series: “You have your mother’s eyes.”

The book, however, is a bit more subtle. He simply says “Look … at … me …,” presumably, so he could see Lily’s eyes one last time.
