When Were The Harry Potter Books Released

Don't Miss

Are The Harry Potter Movies On Peacock Or Hbo Max

Harry Potter, “Deathly Hallows” book release, 2007

Wait, didn’t Peacock have the Harry Potter movies? Or was it HBO Max? Yes, both did for a time.

HBO Max streamed the Harry Potter movies when it launched last summer. See, WarnerMedia owns the Harry Potter film franchise. However, the corporation sold the broadcast and cable rights to NBCUniversal, which owns Peacock. But WarnerMedia borrowed them back likely for a hefty fee so that its new streaming service could launch with some big titles.

Then, the Harry Potter movies moved to Peacock, where they will stream on and off through 2021. They may return to HBO Max for a limited run, as well. And then who knows what will happen in 2025, when NBCUniversal’s TV rights lapse.

As writer Jess Mason joked on , “Harry Potter is like the child of a divorce where the parents are Universal and Warner Bros and the franchise just keeps being pulled to different homes.”

So many streaming services, all fighting over the same valuable IP.

Th Anniversary Covers By Brian Selznick

Harry Potter Scenes That Were In The Movies And Not In The Books

To mark the end of Harry Potter’s 20th-anniversary celebrations, Scholastic released new paperback editions with covers by Caldecott Award-winning illustrator Brian Selznick on June 26, 2018. Unlike the previous edition, which featured the linked-spine binding by Kazu Kibuishi, the Selznick covers form a mural when shelved in order face-out . Another exciting aspect of this edition is the addition of a map of Hogwarts at the beginning of each book!

The Harry Potter phenomen is credited with many things, such as making reading cool again, but I believe it also introduced a generation to the idea of collecting books. The curious thing is, these young collectors may not use the word collector to describe themselves, referring to themselves instead as fans of X, Y, or Z. They express their allegiance in online memes and label themselves as being on one “team” or another of their particular fandom. Twilight fans were Team Jacob or Team Edward, Hunger Games fans align with Team Peeta or Team Gale, and Pokemon Go players must choose between teams Mystic, Instinct, and Valor as they progress through the game. But however they choose to refer to themselves, people are collecting books, cards, stickers, and toys related to their favorite fandoms with enthusiasm.

Number 12 Grimmauld Place

Number 12, Grimmauld Place , London is the address and name of reference to the home of the Black family, an ancient and pure-blooded line of wizards. It first appears in the fifth book. The structure of Number 12 Grimmauld Place is a Georgian terraced house.

Number 12 houses the Black family tree on a wall tapestry, and an enchanted portrait of Walburga Black, Sirius’ mother. An ancient and deeply mad house-elf named Kreacher is loyal to the portrait of Mrs. Black. There are other portraits of members of the Black family, including Phineas Nigellus Black, one-time Head of the Black family and least-popular Headmaster of Hogwarts. The staircase is lined with the heads of beheaded former house-elves, which are mounted onto the walls.

The house fell into disrepair during Sirius’ twelve-year imprisonment in Azkaban. Following his escape, he returned to it in the fifth book to discover that it was now a gloomy and unpleasant ruin teeming with dust, decay, magical creatures, and various dangers. Harry, Ron, Hermione, and various members of the Order gradually restore it to a livable condition over the course of this book. In Half-Blood Prince, Harry learns that he has inherited the property under the terms of Sirius’ will, although he donates it to the Order .

The Claremont Square area of London was used for the exteriors of Number 12, Grimmauld Place.

Harry Potters Popularity Completely Changed The Publishing Industry And The Effect Spilled Over To Hollywood

Here are just two of the ways Harry Potter changed publishing, and how those changes affected the rest of pop culture:

1) The books made it possible to publish long works aimed at children. Prior to Harry Potter, the accepted wisdom was that kids didnt have the attention span to read long books. And anyway, the thinking went, kids werent buying their own books. Their parents were paying for everything, and they would never be willing to pay an extra dollar or two for a longer book, with its extra printing and binding.

But after Harry Potter became an unstoppable cultural force, and it was clear that fans would keep buying thebooks no matter what, it started to expand. The last four volumes of the series are all doorstoppers that clock in at well over 700 pages each.

Publishers and childrens writers took notice. Booklist found that middle-grade novels expanded 115.5 percent between 2006 and 2016, the decade in which the Potter novels were at their longest.

The Outsiders reinvented young adult fiction. Harry Potter made it inescapable.

2) Harry Potter made childrens literature an unstoppable force. Before Harry Potter, childrens literature was often considered an afterthought. Sales were falling. Children, analysts would say wistfully, just werent reading anymore.

Harry Potter Movies In Order Of Chronological Events

Now, heres where things get slightly tricky. The Fantastic Beasts films are prequels, so they take place decades before the events of the original Harry Potter movies.

Those take place during Harrys time at Hogwarts, so each book/movie corresponds to a school year. The final two movies split the final book and school year.

Heres the list of Harry Potter movies and the year in which they are set:

  • Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
  • Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
  • Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone
  • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
  • Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
  • Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
  • Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
  • Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2
  • Fantastic Beasts 3 is likely to be set right after the second film in that series and before the events of Sorcerers Stone.

And if the Harry Potter stage play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, is made into a movie, it would fall at the end of both the release order and chronological order since its set circa 2017.

Publication And Reception In The United Kingdom

Harry Potterâs Birthday: 20 Years since the release of the ...

Bloomsbury accepted the book, paying Rowling a £2,500 advance, and Cunningham sent proof copies to carefully chosen authors, critics and booksellers in order to obtain comments that could be quoted when the book was launched. He was less concerned about the book’s length than about its author’s name, since the title sounded like a boys’ book to him, and he believed boys preferred books by male authors. Rowling therefore adopted the nom de plumeJ.K. Rowling just before publication. In June 1997, Bloomsbury published Philosopher’s Stone with an initial print-run of 500 copies in hardback, three hundred of which were distributed to libraries. Her original name, “Joanne Rowling”, can be found on the copyright page of all British editions until September 1999. The short initial print run was standard for first novels, and Cunningham hoped booksellers would read the book and recommend it to customers. Examples from this initial print run have sold for as much as US$33,460 in a 2007 Heritage Auction.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone won two publishing industry awards given for sales rather than literary merit, the British Book Awards Children’s Book of the Year and the Booksellers’ Association / Bookseller Author of the Year. By March 1999 UK editions had sold just over 300,000 copies, and the story was still the UK’s best-selling title in December 2001. A Braille edition was published in May 1998 by the Scottish Braille Press.

    Slug And Jiggers Apothecary

The Apothecary sells scales, potions and potion ingredients. The shop is quite fascinating despite its very bad smell . The inside includes barrels of slimy stuff on the floor, jars of herbs, dried roots and bright powders on the shelves, and bundles of feathers, strings of fangs and snarled claws hanging from the ceiling. Harry regularly buys ingredients, as well as his scales, from the Apothecary.

Some of the ingredients available are silver unicorn horns , glittery-black beetle eyes , and Dragon liver .

Harry Potter Movies In Release Order

There are no complicated interweaving timelines to deal with if you watch the Potter movies in release date order its two distinct series, with an incomplete set of prequels following on from the parent franchise. That means theres no need to introduce any kind of Machete Order yet though if we get some massive revelation in Fantastic Beasts 3, 4 and 5, that may change. Fantastic Beasts 3 starts shooting early in 2020, ahead of a 2021 release.

Its also interesting to note that there are more Harry Potter movies than there are books, with seventh instalment The Deathly Hallows split into two parts because there was so much story to fit in. Were sure the extra box office didnt hurt either
