The second edition of Harry Potter is slightly better constructed and more emotionally involving than the first movie, which, of course, will help it to make a lot of money. However, be forewarned: knowledge of the Harry Potter books or the first movie is a necessity for fully comprehending this second in the series. It is not a stand-alone movie.

Like the first two books and the first movie, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets suffers from an ambling, prolonged introduction that doesnt quite clarify what the jeopardy is or who the villain is. With nothing at stake, the movie at first appears to be a series of vignettes. When the jeopardy does engage, the movie becomes an exciting action adventure fantasy that follows the classic model of heroic tales, but, then, it has several curtain call endings. Several of these manipulate the audience into feeling good about the characters in the movie and perhaps even clapping for the movie.

The 9 Most Surprising Harry Potter Movie Moments

    • The scene in Flourish & Blotts, where Hermione’s parents are seen inside Diagon Alley, has been called a plot hole. Normally, Muggles cannot enter, or see, Diagon Alley. However, the Grangers are accompanied by Hermione, who, as a witch, would know how to enter through the Leaky Cauldron . In the book, the Grangers comment to Mr. Weasley about having visited Gringotts to exchange their Muggle money for Wizarding money. If this is the case, they obviously aren’t the first Muggles to enter Diagon Alley .
    • At the end of the credits we see what happened to the amnesiac Professor Gilderoy Lockhart. He has written a book titled “Who Am I?”. His moving image on the book’s cover wears a straitjacket, and hums the movie’s theme tune.
    • German theatrical version was cut to secure a “Not under 6” rating. Additionally some dialogue was changed . This version was released on DVD & VHS in Germany and Austria but not in Switzerland where the uncut version was released . The uncut version of the movie was rated “Not under 12” and was shown on TV and released on Blu-ray.

    Costume And Set Design

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Production designer Stuart Craig returned for the sequel to design new elements previously not seen in the first film. He designed the Burrow based on Arthur Weasley‘s interest in Muggles, built vertically out of architectural salvage. Mr. Weasley’s flying car was created from a 1962 Ford Anglia 105E. The Chamber of Secrets, measuring over 76 metres long and 36.5 metres wide, was the biggest set created for the saga. Dumbledore’s office, which houses the Sorting Hat and the Sword of Gryffindor, was also built for the film.

Lindy Hemming was the costume designer for Chamber of Secrets. She retained many of the characters’ already established appearances, and chose to focus on the new characters introduced in the sequel. Gilderoy Lockhart’s wardrobe incorporated bright colours, in contrast with the “dark, muted or sombre colours” of the other characters. Branagh said, “We wanted to create a hybrid between a period dandy and someone who looked as if they could fit into Hogwarts.” Hemming also perfected Lucius Malfoy’s costume. One of the original concepts was for him to wear a pinstripe suit, but was changed to furs and a snake head cane in order to remark his aristocrat quality and to reflect a “sense of the old.”

    The Heir Of Slytherin

    • In the film, Harry, shortly after Riddle rearranged his name to unveil his true identity as Lord Voldemort, explicitly states the latter’s the Heir of Slytherin. Harry does not do so in the book, though it was nonetheless made very clear what Riddle/Voldemort’s connection to the Heir of Slytherin was.
    • In the film, the Basilisk is seen chasing Harry all around the Chamber of Secrets whereas in the book, Harry’s fight against the Basilisk occurs quickly and neatly. In the book, Harry never climbs up the statue nor does he go into the statue.
    • In addition, Tom Riddle’s reaction throughout the fight in the film was significantly calmer compared to the book. In the film, outside of yelling “No!” in shock and stating that the Basilisk can still use its other senses , he does not react in any way to the Basilisk missing Harry. In the book, Tom Riddle is repeatedly yelling at the Basilisk to smell Harry when it is repeatedly missing Harry in their fight.
    • The film also has Riddle claiming that Harry Potter’s parseltongue abilities are of no use against the Basilisk, as it was specifically trained to only obey him, something that was not in the book .
  • The Chamber has a different depiction
  • In the book, after Fawkes had punctured the Basilisk’s eyes, Riddle stated that it can still smell Harry. In the film, Riddle stated that it can hear him.
  • The departure from the Chamber is depicted differently in the film and the book by the end of the characters’ journey with Fawkes.

On each occasion Harry hears thevoice again.

Slytherinwas one of the four founders of the school but left because he wanted to makeHogwarts only available to pure wizards and witches not mudbloods. The Writing On The Wall

    • In the book, Harry, Ron and Hermione are interrogated by the teachers in Gilderoy Lockhart’s office, while the film has them staying in the corridor where the attack happened.
    • Mention of Filch being a Squib is omitted. However, very oddly, the term is mentioned in the Danish version of the subtitles calling him Mr Squib, although with the Danish term.
    • Mention of Ron’s detention and the fact that he recognised Tom Riddle’s name from an award he received for special services to the school, was cut, but appears on the deleted scenes.
    • In the film, Hermione claims that the message on the wall is written in blood. The book, however, states that message is simply written in red paint.
    • In the film, it is Professor McGonagall who tells the class about the history of the Chamber of Secrets instead of Professor Binns.
    • Because of the scene with Harry first hearing the Basilisk being moved to during his detention session with Gilderoy Lockhart instead of while heading back from the Deathday Party for Nearly-Headless Nick, the teachers’ interrogation of Harry, Ron and Hermione was altered:
    • As in the book, Snape views Harry in particular as a suspect due to the latter’s absence during dinner, but in the film Lockhart then admits causing Harry’s absence, unintentionally having Harry stay beyond the intended time period for detention.
    • Hermione explains both her and Ron’s absence by saying they noticed that Harry was missing and they tried to search for him.

/10 Who Tells The Students About The Chamber Of Secrets Legend

Readers get the legend of the Chamber of Secrets explained to them by Professor Binns during a History of Magic class. It is a dramatic departure from Professor Binns’ dry lectures that no one but Hermione listens to or retains.

With no Professor Binns in the movies, the legend is shared by Professor McGonagall during a Transfiguration class instead. Maggie Smith is a phenomenal actress and it comes as no surprise that she does an excellent job sharing the story.

Then there was Hogwarts and the wizarding world in general. There was Ron and Harry’s crazy adventure to get to school after missing the train. There were the new and interesting classes that we got to see the kids in. It was also just nice to revisit all of these characters and the magical school. In the first movie, filmmakers took the challenge of setting up the characters and school in a way that audiences would enjoy and want to revisit, and they knocked it out of the park. The filmmakers then went up to bat with a new challenge in this movie, as they had to capitalize on the nostalgia that the first movie had created, while also introducing new things to keep things fresh. I thought the filmmakers knocked it out of the park with this movie as well.

/8 Headmasters And Historians Alike Had Searched For It

Many Headmasters/, Headmistresses, and historians have all gone hunting for the Chamber of Secrets. And before Harry and his friends intervened, none had ever succeeded in finding it. This likely has to do with the fact that none of them spoke Parseltongue. Still, it is both impressive and surprising that Slytherin was able to keep such a secret for as long as he did. He should probably consider himself fortunate that the Room of Requirement wasnt able to help out in the search.

The search for the Chamber of Secrets hit a fever pitch after the death of a student one infamous Moaning Mytle, to be exact. And even then, it still remained hidden. Though the search did force Tom Riddle to stop his plans.

Connection To Harry Potter And The Half

Chamber of Secrets has many links with the sixth book of the series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. In fact, Half-Blood Prince was the working title of Chamber of Secrets and Rowling says she originally intended to present some “crucial pieces of information” in the second book, but ultimately felt “this information’s proper home was book six”. Some objects that play significant roles in Half-Blood Prince first appear in Chamber of Secrets: the Hand of Glory and the opal necklace that are on sale in Borgin and Burkes a Vanishing Cabinet in Hogwarts that is damaged by Peeves the Poltergeist and Tom Riddle’s diary, which is later shown to be a Horcrux. Additionally, these two novels are the ones with the most focus on Harry’s relationship with Ginny Weasley.

The film version of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was released in 2002.Chris Columbus directed the film, and the screenplay was written by Steve Kloves. It became the third film to exceed $600 million in international box office sales, preceded by Titanic, released in 1997, and Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, released in 2001. The film was nominated for a Saturn Award for the Best Fantasy Film, According to Metacritic, the film version of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets received “generally favourable reviews” with an average score of 63%, and another aggregator, Rotten Tomatoes, gave it a score of 82%.
