The Best Book Like Harry Potter

I recently had the great pleasure of meeting the good folks at the book charity BookTrust. As the largest reading charity in the UK, BookTrust provides books to close to 3.5 million children every year.

When I was asked via Twitter to come up with one book that children and teens would like to read after Harry Potter as part of BookTrusts #WhatToReadAfter campaign, I chose Knights of the Borrowed Dark by Dave Rudden. Its the story of an orphan named Denizen who firmly doesnt believe in the supernatural. When he discovers that monsters are crawling from the shadows and hes actually part of an ancient family of mage-knights sent to destroy them, his opinion changes somewhat.

Using BookTrusts #WhatToReadAfter initiative, you can find great books to keep you going within a particular genre or style. No matter what House you belong to, here are some great books that you can read after youve finished Harry Potter.

Three Dark Crowns By Kendare Blake

In this dark fantasy series, three sisters must fight to the death to become the queen of the island of Fennbirm. Triplets, each of the sisters possess a particular kind of magic they use against each other in a battle that begins when they turn 16.

Blake establishes myriad side plots and relationships, builds complex characters, and leaves plenty of compelling avenues to explore in future books, writes Publishers Weekly. Teens from eighth grade and up are the right audience, but adults will like the hypnotic story, too.

The four-book series consists of Three Dark Crowns, One Dark Throne, Two Dark Reigns, and Five Dark Fates.

A Discovery Of Witches By Deborah Harkness

People magazine calls the All Souls series by Deborah Harkness a wonderfully imaginative grown-up fantasy with all the magic of Harry Potter and Twilight. That makes it the perfect choice for what to read after Harry Potter, especially if youre a fan of witches and vampires.

In the first book, A Discovery of Witches, Oxford scholar and witch-descendant Diana Bishop finds an enchanted alchemical manuscript that unleashes evil on the world. Along with her vampire boyfriend, Diana must hold the evil at bay. The All Souls series continues with Shadow of Night, The Book of Life, and Times Convert. The books have also been adapted as a television series.

Amulet By Kazu Kibuishi

I’ve read Harry potter after watching the movies…is it worth it?

So far, I listed a good number of options for people of all ages. This one is a little different as it is a graphic novel series. Mystery, magic, and deep bonds aside, Amulet shares something else in common with the famous Harry Potter series. The author and artist Kazu Kibuishi created the cover art for the 15th-anniversary box set of J. K. Rowlings most notable work back in 2013. Amulet features stunning artwork and captivating visuals from Kibuishi, pairing perfectly with the unique storyline.

The unusual blend of sci-fi and fantasy works beautifully and it is all tied together by the plot. The main characters include a brother and a sister on the hunt for their kidnapped mother and a mechanical rabbit named Miskit. Take the plunge into the underground universe of Amulet with the debut title, The Stonekeeper: A Graphic Novel, for or $10.69 at the Kobo store. There are eight titles in the series so far, with the ninth volume set to conclude the series. Kibuishi has not shared a tentative release date as of yet.

The Jumbies By Tracey Baptiste

Based on a Haitian folktale, The Jumbies series by Tracey Baptiste focuses on Corinne Le Mer, an 11-year-old girl who lives on an island in the Caribbean. Corinne must use her bravery and a little magic to stop an evil spirit from invading her home. Its refreshing to see a fantasy with its roots outside Europe, says Kirkus Reviews. This is a book worth reading simply for its originality. Its a good option for kids in grade level three to six. As one teacher wrote on Amazon, This book is real deal literature for children! The first book in the series is The Jumbies, followed by Rise of the Jumbies and The Jumbie Gods Revenge.

Fablehaven By Brandon Mull

If youre looking for books similar to Harry Potter that you can read aloud to your kids, look no further than Fablehaven. Smart dialogue and a unique take on a familiar fantasy story make this five-book series a must-read for Potter fans. When 13-year-old Kendra Sorenson and her 11-year-old brother Seth are sent to stay with their grandfather, they soon discover he is the caretaker of a refuge for mystical creatures like trolls and fairies. Naturally things go wrong, and Kendra must step in to save her family.

Great for young readers and old teens alike, one reviewer on Amazon calls this series perfect for fans of Harry Potter and Percy Jackson, while another praises the complex characters whose personalities cause many of the issues that they then need to resolve.

The five books in the series are Fablehaven, Rise of the Evening Star, Grip of the Shadow Plague, Secrets of the Dragon Sanctuary, and Keys to the Demon Prison.

Books To Read If You Loved Harry Potter

It has to be the question I get most as a teacher librarian. What should I read after Harry Potter? After students discover their love for Harry Potter and have re read it a few times, worked their way through all the accompanying companion books, information books about how the movies were made, History of Magic, short stories, screen plays and novelty books , they finally reach a point of wanting something similar but different.

What to read if you liked Harry Potter is also something I deal with for older students. The Harry Potter books might have been the only books they have read. Or maybe the enjoyed the movies, dont want to read the books but would be open to reading something similar. Having a few titles on hand to suggest is always handing. But searching the web, there must be a million suggestions for Harry Potter readalikes out there. Or, maybe you are a parent with a child who wants to read Harry Potter but youd like to steer them towards something similar.

There are lots of lists with suggestions out there, so I am not going to recommend the usual suspects, like the Percy Jackson series. While these are perfect for Harry Potter lovers, youve probably already seen them in reading suggestion lists, so I am going to chose some of my favourite and more obscure recommendations, as well as books by Australian authors.

Miss Peregrines Peculiar Children Series By Ransom Riggs

In Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children, 16-year-old Jacob Portman finds himself on a remote Welsh island where he discovers an abandoned orphanage and signs of the unique children who once inhabited it. Vintage photos add to the tense, time-travel-y mystery in each of the six books penned by Ransom Riggs.

Imaginative, peculiar, and fantastic! writes one reviewer on Amazon. Alice in Wonderland meets Harry Potter, says another.

The six-book series begins with Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children, which is followed by The Hollow City, Library of Souls, A Map of Days, The Conference of Birds, and The Desolations of Devils Acre.

If You Just Cant Get Enough Of Harry Potter

I resisted picking up a copy of the eighth Harry Potter story, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, because Id heard mixed reviews of the story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne, and John Tiffany. Its a play script rather than a novel, and it focuses on the next generation of kids at Hogwarts, though Harry, Ron, and Hermione do play major roles.

Then my daughter talked me into buying tickets for the Broadway production. And I have to say, maybe a bit grudgingly, its a reasonably good continuation of the series. Not perfect, not necessarily the direction I would have gone, but stilla worthy successor. See the full production if you can or read the script if a live performance isnt in the cards. Either way, its a nice way to say goodbyeagainto the wizarding world. And you can always pretend its fan fiction if the storys particular twists and turns arent to your liking.

From the Publisher: It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isnt much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband, and father of three school-age children.

While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.

What People Are Saying: A well-crafted and enjoyable read.Tyler Hixson, School Library Journal

The Heroes Of Olympus Series By Rick Riordan

Percy Jackson and his friends are back in this sequel series along with great new characters you will quickly fall in love with. The Olympian gods have Roman Personas as well as greek and have Roman half-blood children too. Every time the Greek and Roman half-bloods find out about each other disaster strikes. This is why the gods determined to keep their existence a secret from each other.

However, there is now a threat even greater than the Titans that could spell the end of the world, and Heroes from both camps must come together to fulfill a long-ago prophesy. Of course, Percy finds himself right in the middle of it (though at the beginning of this series he doesn’t even remember who he is. Heh Hem…Thanks, Hera or Juno…Whatever you want to be called.

Will Percy and his fellow Half-Bloods be able to overcome their prejudices and work together to save the world. Each one is vital for the success of the prophecy.

LIke with Percy Jackson and the Olympians, this 5 book series also has action, adventure, young Heroes , proud arrogant gods, mythical monsters, quick-witted humor as well as a love story that not even Tarturus can stand in the way of. Trust me when you start this series you won’t want to put it down until you finish it.

These books are available in Paperback, Hardback, Audiobook, and Kindle formats.
