Names From Harry Potter

My Name is Harry Potter

Names from Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling are among the most inventive and inspired names in literature since Charles Dickens created Pip and Oliver Twist. Rowling is credited with making names such as Luna and Arabella the hits they are today.

Along with Luna and Arabella, other Harry Potter names in the US Top 1000 include Alice, Augustus, Cedric, Helena, Marjorie, Orion, Reginald, and Seamus. Unique Harry Potter baby names that might appeal to contemporary parents include Ginny, Phineas, Pomona, and Sybil.

From Draco Malfoy to Severus Snape, from Hermione to Harry himself, Harry Potter names often hail from history and might inspire names for your modern baby.

Luna is one of the most popular names from Harry Potter, though its widespread use has also been thanks to John Legend and Chrissy Teigen, who gave it to their daughter. There were 144 baby girls named Luna in the US in 2000 and 7,770 named Luna in 2020. In the UK, 1216 baby girls were named Luna last year.

No baby girls were named Hermione in 2000 in the US, and 91 named Hermione in 2020. In the UK, the name enjoyed somewhat more use pre-Harry Potter: 21 baby girls were named Hermione in 1996, the year before the first book appeared, a number that increased to 64 in 2020. Hermione peaked in the UK in 2004, arguably the height of the Harry Potter craze.

Lavender and Andromeda are also enjoying popularity in the US, but thats along with other botanical and astronomical names.

Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets

In the second book, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Rowling pits Harry against Tom Riddle, Lord Voldemort’s “memory” within a secret diary which has possessed Ron’s younger sister Ginny. When Muggle-born students are suddenly being Petrified, many suspect that Harry may be behind the attacks, further alienating him from his peers. Furthermore, Harry begins to doubt his worthiness for House of Gryffindor, particularly considering he discovers he shares Lord Voldemort’s ability to communicate with snakes via Parseltongue. In the climax, Ginny disappears. To rescue her, Harry battles Riddle and the monster he controls that is hidden in the Chamber of Secrets. To defeat the monster, Harry summons the Sword of Godric Gryffindor from the Sorting Hat supplied by Dumbledore’s pet phoenix, Fawkes. In doing so, Dumbledore later restores Harry’s self-esteem by explaining that that feat is clear proof of his worthiness of his present house.

Wizarding World Baby Names: Find Your Harry Potter Name!

Theyre called Muggle-born, but really theyre immigrants, newcomers to a world they never knew existed until Hogwarts acceptance letters changed everything. That was true for Lily Evans Potter, whose nature name fit right in. Hermione, too, was the daughter of dentists, but with an unusual ancient name, no one would think it.

Others, though, like brothers Colin and Dennis Creevey, remind us that a great many conventional names make their way into the world thanks to new arrivals.

Horace Eugene Flaccus Slughorn Is Obsessed With Good Breeding But He Has Some Good Characteristics

The Roman poet Horace was known for his witty and well-mannered writing that nonetheless contained serious critiques of his society at the time. In poems written about him, he’s often depicted as being friends with other famous Roman poets, like Virgil, so that could be a reference to how Slughorn likes to create a coterie of powerful friends around him.

“Eugene” is Greek for “well-born” , which alludes to Slughorn’s status as a Slytherin and proponent of nepotism.

“Flaccus” is another Roman reference, referring to a well-off family line. It was also used as a nickname meaning “fatty.” In the “Harry Potter” books and movies, Slughorn had a bit of a belly.

“Slughorn” is a word in a Gaelic dialect that “slogan” is derived from, basically meaning “war cry.” It could be a reference to the ultimately moral convictions Slughorn holds. He did, after all, help defend Hogwarts in the Battle of Hogwarts in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.”

Kingsley Shacklebolt Has An Appropriately Royal Name For A Person Who Becomes The Minister For Magic

A shacklebolt is the metal part of a chained shackle that holds it closed. When she named the character, Rowling could have been referring to the character’s focus on security, or she could have been making a vague comment about bondage and slavery, because Shacklebolt is one of the few black characters in the “Harry Potter” universe. Rowling also includes a pun in his name his Patronus is a Lynx, which sounds like the “links” of a chain.

“Kingsley,” on the other hand, has connotations of royalty. He uses the code name “Royal” in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” and becomes Minister for Magic after Voldemort falls.

Creation For Books And Films

Rowling has suggested that she may have inadvertently taken the name from the hogwort plant , which she had seen at Kew Gardens some time before writing the series, although the names The Hogwarts and Hoggwart appear in the 1954 Nigel Molesworth book How to Be Topp by Geoffrey Willans.

Most exterior scenes were shot on location at Alnwick Castle, but views of the exterior of the entire school were created from shots of Durham Cathedral with a digital spire added to the towers. Durham Cathedral also served as a set for Hogwarts interiors.

A scale model was created for exterior shots of the entire school. Models of Alnwick Castle and Durham Cathedral were also built to create more integration between the model and on location shots. It took a team of 86 artists and crew members 74 years worth of man hours to complete the model.

Rhymes Anagrams And Acronyms

The series involves many songs, poems, and rhymes, some of which proved difficult to translators. One rhyme, a riddle told by a sphinx in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, posed a particular problem. The riddle involves taking words from a poem and using them to form a longer word, spider, in answer to the riddle. In the Taiwanese translation, the English words are simply put in parentheses. In other translations, the riddle is changed to provide different words that can be put together to make up the translated version of spider.

Some acronyms also proved difficult the abbreviations O.W.L.s and N.E.W.T.s needed to be translated to reflect the fact that their abbreviations spelled out the names of animals associated with the wizarding world, which did not always work in other languages. N.E.W.T.s was translated into Swedish as F.U.T.T. . Futt means measly in Swedish.

In Slovenian, both names are completely changed. Tom Marvolo Riddle is and Lord Voldemort is translated as Lord Mrlakenstein. When the name Mark Neelstin is rearranged in the scene, it spells Mrlakenstein. Because the books in Slovenia were released with a three-year delay, the translation of Voldemort is consistent throughout the series. The film series corresponds with the book translation. The Danish translation uses abbreviation and suffix to make the name work. The translation is Romeo G. Detlev Jr an anagram of Jeg er Voldemort .

Interview With Adam Houston The Harry Potter Specialist

Can you introduce yourself for our readers? Whats your story as a collector?

My name is Adam Houston, Im from the U.K. and Ive been a Harry Potter fan since I first read the books as a child. I had previously collected other books but I purchased my first Harry Potter book back in 2015. I remember it was a pristine, first printing, first state, copy of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. It wasnt until the summer of 2017 though when I decided to exclusively focus on being a dedicated Harry Potter collector. I purchased a first printing paperback and second printing hardback copy of Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, which were books that had been on my want list for quite a while. At this point my goal was to complete a fine condition set of the Bloomsbury uncorrected proofsincluding both states of Prisoner of Azkabanwhich I was delighted to have achieved in back in 2019. To this day that proof set is one of only two collections in the world to have all the trial dust jackets presentincluding the ultra rare Prisoner of Azkaban trial jacket of which there are only two known in the world.

Harry Potter Name Origins

Now that the series has come to an end, MuggleNet has created a comprehensive list of all of our favorite character names, places, objects, and strange nouns that JKR appears to have created from nowhere. But where did these words originate? You can find out here!

This page serves as a reference for what some of the names and places in the Harry Potter series mean in other languages, what they might be named after, or some stories surrounding them in mythology. The names are in alphabetical order. To find someone, look for their first name or last name. If we have the etymology for both parts of the names, you will find them separated. For instance, Severus Snape is separated into Severus and Snape. If a name has meaning when left together, such as Fleur Delacour, it will be left that way. Titles are behind the characters name .

Special thanks to Fronskie Feint for some of these origins and to Steve Vander Ark from the Harry Potter Lexicon for some help with the spells.

Magical Abilities And Skills

HARRY POTTER NAME MEANINGS – WAS IT ALL PLANNED!?

Throughout the series, Harry Potter is described as a gifted wizard apprentice. He has a particular talent for flying, which manifests itself in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone the first time he tries it, and gets him a place on a Quidditch team one year before the normal minimum joining age. He captains it in his sixth year. In his fourth year , Harry is able to confront a dragon on his broomstick.

Harry is also gifted in Defence Against the Dark Arts, in which he becomes proficient due to his repeated encounters with Voldemort and various monsters. In his third year, Harry becomes able to cast the very advanced Patronus Charm, and by his fifth year he has become so talented at the subject that he is able to teach his fellow students in Dumbledore’s Army, some even older than him how to defend themselves against Dark Magic. At the end of that year, he achieves an ‘Outstanding’ Defence Against the Dark Arts O.W.L., something that not even Hermione achieved. He is a skilled duellist, the only one of the six Dumbledore’s Army members to be neither injured nor incapacitated during the battle with Death Eaters in the Department of Mysteries in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. He also fends off numerous Death Eaters during his flight to the Burrow at the beginning of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
