The Younger Cast Members Didn’t Initially Realize They Were Working With A

The younger cast fondly recalls during the special how on the set of the first two films, Columbus allowed them to first and foremost be kids. That, of course, presented its challenges. Columbus says, “Theyd say a line, and then theyd smile at the camera. They were just so happy to be in a Harry Potter film that they couldnt contain their excitement long enough to focus on an entire scene.” He adds, “I don’t think any of the kids had the capability of understanding the gravity of who they were dealing with at the time … The British royalty of the acting world.”

While talking with Enoch and Lewis, Tom Felton says, “What’s funny . . . is being surrounded by the cream of the British acting industry and not having a clue who anyone is.” He adds, laughing, “I thought Richard Harris worked here as like as a tour guide for a while.”

Gary Oldman was the first person Radcliffe remembers being completely starstruck by. Watson, while sitting down with Radcliffe and Grint, says she remembers Radcliffe giving her the “Gary chat.” She tells Radcliffe, “You were like, ‘Listen Emma. You need to be cool. Its Gary Oldman. Its a big deal.'”

Harry Potter And The Philosophers Stone Review 20 Years On Its A Nostalgic Spectacular

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone Trailer

The first film in the franchise is re-released into a very different world but its as entertaining and exhilarating as ever

The very first Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone is now re-released after 20 years, into a rather different world. Sadly, the actors who played the original Dumbledore, Snape, Uncle Vernon and Mr Ollivander Richard Harris, Alan Rickman, Richard Griffiths and John Hurt are no longer with us. The Harry Potter franchise itself is still a colossal commercial entity, an IP Shangri La, although its creator JK Rowling is now at the centre of an acrimonious gender politics debate undreamed of in 2001 and the world of childrens and YA fiction, which she almost singlehandedly revived all over the world, is strongly policed on just these issues.

Its amazing and poignant to remember the sheer excitement of that HPATPS premiere in November 2001: I myself called it an old-fashioned pre-September 11 news event. Harry Potter emerged into cinemas as we were still all stunned by 9/11, but yet to see the retaliatory war on terror. This film, emerging four years after the original novel, marked the birth of a new consolatory pop culture myth, to rival Sherlock Holmes and James Bond, and the circumstances of its own arrival became mythic, from Rowlings own early poverty to the snapping up of film rights.

Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone is released on 29 October in cinemas.

Design And Special Effects

Judianna Makovsky served as the costume designer. She re-designed the Quidditch robes, having initially planned to use those shown on the cover of the American book, but deemed them “a mess.” Instead, she dressed the Quidditch players in “preppie sweaters, 19th-century fencing breeches and arm guards.” Production designer Stuart Craig built the sets at Leavesden Studios, including Hogwarts Great Hall, basing it on many English cathedrals. Although originally asked to use an existing old street to film the Diagon Alley scenes, Craig decided to build his own set, comprising Tudor, Georgian and Queen Anne architecture.

Columbus originally planned to use both animatronics and CGI animation to create the magical creatures, including Fluffy. Nick Dudman, who worked on Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, was given the task of creating the needed prosthetics, with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop providing creature effects. John Coppinger stated that the magical creatures that needed to be created had to be designed multiple times. The film features nearly 600 special effects shots, involving numerous companies. Industrial Light & Magic created Lord Voldemort‘s face on the back of Quirrell, Rhythm & Hues animated Norbert and Sony Pictures Imageworks produced the Quidditch scenes.

Harry Potters Popularity Completely Changed The Publishing Industry And The Effect Spilled Over To Hollywood

Harry Potter Movie (2001) Philosopher’s Stone Reaction | First Time Watching Harry Potter

Here are just two of the ways Harry Potter changed publishing, and how those changes affected the rest of pop culture:

1) The books made it possible to publish long works aimed at children. Prior to Harry Potter, the accepted wisdom was that kids didnt have the attention span to read long books. And anyway, the thinking went, kids werent buying their own books. Their parents were paying for everything, and they would never be willing to pay an extra dollar or two for a longer book, with its extra printing and binding.

But after Harry Potter became an unstoppable cultural force, and it was clear that fans would keep buying thebooks no matter what, it started to expand. The last four volumes of the series are all doorstoppers that clock in at well over 700 pages each.

Publishers and childrens writers took notice. Booklist found that middle-grade novels expanded 115.5 percent between 2006 and 2016, the decade in which the Potter novels were at their longest.

The Outsiders reinvented young adult fiction. Harry Potter made it inescapable.

2) Harry Potter made childrens literature an unstoppable force. Before Harry Potter, childrens literature was often considered an afterthought. Sales were falling. Children, analysts would say wistfully, just werent reading anymore.
