You should also look out for original watercolour illustrations by Giles Greenfield, Bloomsbury’s UK edition. If an illustrator has signed a copy, this means it will go up in value.

First Edition Harry Potter Book Sells For 350000
One of the first ever printed editions of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone has sold for over £350,000!
That’s more than the cost of the average house in the UK.
First editions of popular books like this one are very rare, and this copy attracted a lot of interest at an auction in the United States.
Heritage Auctions described the book as being “near pristine” – which means it looked almost brand new – and said only 500 copies existed in the world with its specific binding.

How To Spot A Rare Copy Of The Other Harry Potter Books
Harry Potter books are still being printed – you can pick up a copy for £4 or buy the whole collection for less than £30 – and that means your old books need to be that extra bit special to be worth anything.
First editions, especially of the first two books, are worth at least £20 regardless of the state they’re in and they can be worth thousands of pounds.
A book with a genuine signature will always help to increase the value, as will inscriptions by JK Rowling herself.

If you’re lucky enough to have had the whole collection of first editions signed then you’re in for more than £28,000.
Other things to look out for are rarer versions of the books, such as ones with large print, illustrations and different covers – basically if it’s out of the ordinary and no longer being printed, you’re in for a winner.

Order Of The Pheonix Half
If you have a copy of Order of the Pheonix signed by Rowling at the initial launch event in Edinburgh, Scotland, youre looking at a four-figure sum. Copies signed by the books illustrators may be valuable, but youre probably looking in the hundreds rather than the thousands.
As for Half-Blood Prince, youll again need JK Rowlings signature for the book to be worth anything. This book came out when the Harry Potter series was at peak popularity, so its difficult to find any collectors items in the later books.
Unsurprisingly, its the same deal with Deathly Hallows. Without Rowlings signature, its just another Harry Potter book. With it, your humble Harry Potter books value could be four-figures.

Harry Potter author JK Rowling has thanked fans saying “it’s been wonderful” on today’s anniversary which marks 20 years since the first book was published.
Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone was first published on June 26 1997 and has since sold more than 450 million copies worldwide in 79 languages.
Rowling wrote on Twitter: “20 years ago today a world that I had lived in alone was suddenly open to others. It’s been wonderful. Thank you.”
The Harry Potter books have led to a major movie franchise, a sold-out theatre production and multiple theme parks, as well as a booming memorabilia market.

On Thursday a slightly worn, slightly faded copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is going up for auction – it’s expected to make between £20,000 and £30,000.
Lot 535 of Forum Auction’s Thursday sale is described as an “ex-library copy with ink stamp”, the spine ends and corners are “bumped”, there’s chipping to the joints and the laminate is peeling.
Oh, and the “extremities a little rubbed and chipped” while there’s been as “light browning” to the text margins.
But overall, it’s still seen as a “a very good, bright copy, preserved in a fine example of a later dust-jacket”.
It’s also one of only 500 copies of that edition printed – the first time the wider world met Harry Potter – and two years ago one sold for more than £60,000.
Of those 500, some 300 of them are thought to have gone to libraries. But that still makes it “rare in any condition and a far better ex-library copy than usually encountered” as the lot description reads.

According to the BBC, Hansons Auctioneers in London just sold a rare first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone for £46,000 .
Awards Honours And Recognition
The Harry Potter series has been recognised by a host of awards since the initial publication of Philosopher’s Stone including a platinum award from the Whitaker Gold and Platinum Book Awards , three Nestlé Smarties Book Prizes , two Scottish Arts Council Book Awards , the inaugural Whitbread children’s book of the year award , the WHSmith book of the year , among others. In 2000, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was nominated for a Hugo Award for Best Novel, and in 2001, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire won said award. Honours include a commendation for the Carnegie Medal , a short listing for the Guardian Children’s Award , and numerous listings on the notable books, editors’ Choices, and best books lists of the American Library Association, The New York Times, Chicago Public Library, and Publishers Weekly.

How Much Have The Movies Made
The same report also claimed that Rowling had also made $7.7b in sales through the movies. The first was the biggest box office hit of the year, finishing ahead of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring at the top of the standings. Every Potter movie ranked as one of the highest-grossing films of their given release years, ending with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 in 2011. Coincidentally, it’s also the shortest movie of the collection, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Fans even got to see the main cast members aged up at the end, just like in the source material, and it was good to see Voldemort defeated once and for all.
Your Old Polly Pockets Could Now Be Worth A Fortune
Books within the same batch as the one that just sold are instantly recognisable because of two distinctive typos, one of which can be seen from the outside. First, check the back cover where the word philosopher will be spelled wrong.
Next, flick to page 53 where a supply list of magical items has an accidental repeat of 1 wand. Instead of being referred to as JK Rowling, on the earlier printed editions the author is known as Joanne. And finally, the publisher must be Bloomsbury, the date on the copyright page must be 1997 and the print line on the page must read: 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1.
Although the owner of the book which sold at auction has decided to stay anonymous, it is reported by CNN that she invited Hansons Auctioneers in Staffordshire to value a large amount of books, include the rare Harry Pottertome.
Jill Gallone, head of media at Hansons Auctioneers, spoke to the news outlet outlining the above tips for spotting a rare edition and confirming that these editions are considered rare because many went to schools and libraries, as Rowlings masterpiece wasnt nearly as celebrated then.
Gallone says: When the owner bought it all those years ago, nobody knew that Harry Potter would turn out to be this popular.
