Gringotts Wizarding Bank | Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 2

While the Weasleys arent known for their wealth, Fred and George first started turning a profit at school before using their talents for mischief to open Weasleys Wizard Wheezes. Despite only being open for a matter of months, it’s one of the few Diagon Alley stores thriving in Half-Blood Prince and makes a killing within the Hogwarts community.

Hundreds of orders are also placed from the Ministry for the joke shop’s more practical, anti-dark magic line. With the biggest possible client in wizarding Britain on their side, it’s no wonder the pair are already living a lifestyle filled with dragon-skin jackets and gold jewelry in their first year of business.

Slug And Jiggers Apothecary

The Apothecary sells scales, potions and potion ingredients. The shop is quite fascinating despite its very bad smell . The inside includes barrels of slimy stuff on the floor, jars of herbs, dried roots and bright powders on the shelves, and bundles of feathers, strings of fangs and snarled claws hanging from the ceiling. Harry regularly buys ingredients, as well as his scales, from the Apothecary.

Some of the ingredients available are silver unicorn horns , glittery-black beetle eyes , and Dragon liver .

Not Entirely Subject To Magical Laws

Harry Potter News: Gringotts Bank Coming to the Harry ...

Gringotts receives some kind of legal protection from the Ministry of Magic’s various laws, explaining why the vaults are maintained even if the respective client is convicted of a crime.

This is rather unlike muggle jurisprudence, in which the state has the right to repossess their assets However, both the Lestrange and Black vaults are left untouched while their owners are in Azkaban. Further, its singular status in magical economy gives it minting rights, which bring a further level of complextiy, taken care of by the Goblin Liaison Office.

From April 6, visitors to Warner Bros. Studio Tour London The Making of Harry Potter can visit the set of the wizarding world’s famous bank, as the Studio Tour unveils its biggest-ever expansion.

Gringotts Wizarding Bank, owned and run by goblins and with at least one bad-tempered dragon on staff features prominently in the “Harry Potter” books and films, including a key scene in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II where Harry and his friends break out of a secret vault on the back of a Ukrainian Ironbelly dragon.

On April 6, Warner Bros. Studio Tour London will open the doors to a permanent 16,500-square-foot addition featuring the opulent wizarding bank, including the mysterious Lestrange vault and a gallery of goblins, designed and constructed by several original crew members from the films.

Lined with towering marble pillars, the bank’s central hall will sport crystal chandeliers and real brass leaf, along with the goblin employees’ quills, ledgers, inkwells and piles of gold Galleon coins.

The costumes and prosthetics belonging to Bogrod, Griphook and other goblin bankers seen in the films will also be on display.

Fans can enter the Lestrange Vault — the hiding place of the Sword of Gryffindor and Voldemort’s Horcrux in the films — and take a selfie or two against the huge piles of treasure belonging to the sinister Lestrange family.

    Financial engineer studies too-big-to-fail Gringotts

Those of us in the muggle world have plenty of choices for our banking ranging from megabanks to small credit unions but that is not the case for the witches and wizards in the world created by J.K. Rowling. Gringotts Wizarding Bank, depicted throughout the Harry Potter book and movie series, is a monopoly for those living in the Potterverse.

Zachary Feinstein, assistant professor of electrical and systems engineering in the School of Engineering & Applied Science at Washington University in St. Louis, explored the outcome of dividing up Gringotts Wizarding Bank using the latest in financial mathematics research.

The concentration of power and wealth in a single bank such as Gringotts needs to be taken into account when considering the financial security of the entire wizarding economy, Feinstein said. Gringotts certainly is too-big-to-fail.

In a case study entitled Harry Potter and the Goblin Bank of Gringotts, Feinstein applied systemic risk analysis to assess the financial repercussions of splitting up Gringotts Wizarding Bank to stave off the worst economic outcomes that could occur in the event of a return by Voldemort or the release of magical creatures into the muggle world. In doing so, he found the currency exchange rates Wizarding Galleons to British Pounds and U.S. Dollars and the cost of Hogwarts tuition.

Your Guide To The Details Fans Will Appreciate About Gringotts Bank In The Wizarding World Of Harry Potter

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone – Harry’s first time in Gringotts (HD)

There are a lot of memorable scenes from the Harry Potter films, but some of the most fascinating ones to me are when you get to see Gringotts bank and the vaults within. Not to mention being introduced to the banks protectors, the goblins, and the different levels of security one would expect from the safest place in the world. You truly get to see what its like to live in the wizarding world when something as every-day as banking has a layer of magic surrounding it.

Throughout the movies, you watch Harry Potter enter Gringotts several times from his first visit with Hagrid to retrieve a magical object to later, when he tries to snatch a magical object with his two friends. You can relive the trios attempt to steal a horcrux in Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter Diagon Alley. Every time I see the dragon atop the bank and walk through the queue, I find myself marveling at the grand scale and the attention to detail.

Ive compiled the below list of famous artifacts and hidden gems for you to keep an eye out for when you find yourself inside Gringotts bank in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort.

Magical Congress Of The United States Of America

The Magical Congress of the United States of America is the magical body in charge of governing the wizarding population of the United States of America. It is led by the President of the Magical Congress of the United States of America. Unlike the No-Maj United States Congress, which is divided into a House of Representatives and a Senate, the MACUSA is unicameral. The MACUSA is located within the Woolworth Building in downtown New York City and spans hundreds of stories.

Newt Scamander visited the building in the film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, when he was brought in by Porpentina “Tina” Goldstein for threatening the Statute of Secrecy by using magic in front of Jacob Kowalski, a No-Maj.

    Wizard Jobs At Gringotts

There seemed to be several jobs available at Gringotts for wizards, in addition to those positions held by goblins, though they were largely behind-the-scenes. Bill Weasley took a job as a Curse-Breaker, hunting treasure in Egypt after his graduation from Hogwarts. The job was described in a pamphlet available to Hogwarts students.

When he wanted to do work for the Order of the Phoenix, Bill transferred to a desk job in England to be near home. That same year, Fleur Delacour took a job at Gringotts as well, to improve her English, though she only worked part-time. There also seemed to be a full-time security force that was comprised of wizards, and that rushed to the scene when the Lestranges vault was broken into. They also employed Dragon Feeders, a job with a high mortality rate, at 7 Galleons per week.

    Tom Marvolo Riddle’s Diary

In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Tom Riddle’s diary is a major focal point of the story, as its original owner turns out to have far more significance than originally realized. Towards the end of the story, when Harry goes to save Ginny from the Chamber of Secrets, he meets a young Tom Riddle. And it is there that Riddle reveals himself to be Lord Voldemort and explains that he was the one that opened the chamber and released the basilisk.

At the time, the extent of the diarys true nature was not revealed, as Harry was led to believe that Riddle was a memory strengthened by Ginny feeding her emotions to him. In reality, the matter was more complicated, as Dumbledore would reveal to Harry in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince that the diary was just one of seven Horcruxes. This Horcrux, of course, was destroyed by Harry with the basilisk fang during that final confrontation with Riddle.

The Goblins Alone Know The Full Extent Of The Bank’s Many Secrets

Gringotts Wizarding Bank Coming to Harry Potter Studios ...

Gringotts has been run by Goblins since it was founded by the Goblin Gringott, in 1474. Due to the highly-sensitive contents of the bank, the goblins have a code that forbids them from divulging any of the secrets they learn to anyone.

Breaching this rule is considered treachery, and as such, only the Gringotts Goblins know the full extent of the enchantments, underground passages and creatures that are used to protect the bank’s vaults.

    Differences From The Book

Columbus repeatedly checked with Rowling to make sure he was getting minor details correct. Kloves described the film as being “really faithful” to the book. He added dialogue, of which Rowling approved. One of the lines originally included had to be removed after Rowling told him that it would directly contradict an event in the then-unreleased fifth Harry Potter novel Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

The book’s timeline is not enforced in the film. In the book, Harry’s eleventh birthday is in 1991. On the film set for 4 Privet Drive, Dudley’s certificates from primary school bear the year 2001.

    Florean Fortescue’s Ice Cream Parlour

Florean Fortescue’s Ice Cream Parlour, under the management of the owner Florean Fortescue , sold ice cream and other treats, which could be enjoyed at outdoor tables. Harry spent pleasant hours there working on homework assignments before his third year at Hogwarts in Prisoner of Azkaban. Mr Fortescue himself helped him with his school essays and supplied him with free sundaes every half-hour. Nearing the end of the summer holidays, Harry meets Ron and Hermione there. In the Half-Blood Prince the parlour is boarded up and Fortescue has gone missing. Rowling confirmed that Florean was murdered.

The Goblins Briefly Lost Control Of The Bank

During the Second Wizarding War, Voldemort and his forces seized control of the Ministry of Magic and placed a puppet minister in charge, Pius Thicknesse, who was under the Imperius curse at the time.

One of the major power plays that the new regime carried out was to increase their control over Gringott’s Bank. The goblin wearing a uniform of scarlet and gold who would normally guard the entrance was replaced with two wizard guards appointed by the Ministry. Probity Probes would be used to detect concealments, and it was reported that it would take an ordinary client approximately five hours to make a withdrawal at this time.

Inside Harry Potter’s Gringotts Bank | ITV News

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, we discover even more dark secrets of Gringotts, such as the fact a half-blind Ukrainian Ironbelly dragon dwells deep within the bank to protect the highest-security Lestrange vault. To Harry, Ron and Hermiones horror, they learn that the dragon is being kept under poor conditions by the goblins and set him free while on their quest to retrieve one of Voldemorts Horcruxes: the Hufflepuff Cup.

The cruelty put upon the dragon teaches us of the toxic depths that greed can sink to, especially within the goblins themselves, apparently the protectors of Gringotts, yet will still go to immoral lengths to keep the gold safe. Inside the Lestrange vault, Harry learns that a spell, Geminio, has been put on the Horcrux, meaning it will duplicate the object whenever touched. As Griphook says, the copies are worthless, and the expanding gold would eventually lead to being crushed to death. This spell, in itself, comments on the nature of materialism in the wizarding world showing that excess can ultimately be meaningless, or even deadly.

Title: Harry Potter And The Goblin Bank Of Gringotts

Abstract: Gringotts Wizarding Bank is well known as the only financial institution inall of the Wizarding UK as documented in the works recounting the heroics ofHarry Potter. The concentration of power and wealth in this single bank needsto be weighed against the financial stability of the entire Wizarding economy. This study will consider the impact to financial risk of breaking up GringottsWizarding Bank into five component pieces, along the lines of theGlass-Steagall Act in the United States. The emphasis of this work is tocalibrate and simulate a model of the banking and financial systems withinWizarding UK under varying stress test scenarios simulating rumors of LordVoldemort’s return or the release of magical creatures into an unsuspectingmuggle populace. We conclude by comparing the economic fallout from financialcrises under the two systems: Gringotts Wizarding Bank as a monopoly and the split-up financial system. We do this comparison on the level ofminimal system-wide capital injections that would be needed to prevent thefinancial crisis from surpassing the damage caused by Lord Voldemort.

St Mungo’s Hospital For Magical Maladies And Injuries

St Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries is a hospital within the Harry Potter universe. Medics at the hospital are not called doctors, but are known as Healers and wear lime-green robes. Founded by famous wizard Healer Mungo Bonham, St Mungo’s is located in London. It was established to treat magical maladies, injuries or illnesses endemic to the Wizarding World. To enter the premises, one has to step through the window of what appears to be a derelict department store called Purge & Dowse Ltd. The exteriors of the hospital are red-bricked and dirty, which is the complete opposite of the interiors. Inside, everything is very neat and looks exactly as a hospital should. There are six floors. The emblem of St Mungo’s is a magic wand crossed with a bone. This is the hospital where Arthur Weasley is sent after he was attacked by Voldemort’s snake, Nagini, in the Ministry of Magic and Minerva McGonagall is hospitalised from severe stunning when Hagrid is forced out of Hogwarts. During one visit, Harry and company happen across Neville Longbottom, who has come with his grandmother to visit his parents in the long-term care ward. They also find former professor Gilderoy Lockhart there, still suffering from the effects of a backfired Memory Charm.
