A listing of every movie so far that takes place in the Wizarding World, in order of the year that they are supposed to take place.

In the current world where pop culture is at its height popularity-wise, there are a handful of cinematic franchises that make up a huge chunk of the zeitgeist, with armies of loyal followers and an insane amount of conversation surrounding them. One of these franchises, alongside the likes of the MCU and Star Wars, is the fantastical British phenomenon, Harry Potter.

So far, there are ten cinematic films released from the franchise, which are based on the iconic book series with at the very least three more on the way. Considering the ongoing films are prequels, some may get confused or simply wonder about the in-universe chronology of these movies.

Content That May Disturb Children

Under 8

In addition to the violent scenes mentioned above, there are some scenes in this movie that could scare or disturb children under the age of eight. For example:

  • In a couple of scenes, the image of a giant skull forms out of dark clouds.
  • Menacing images of swirling black ink-like vapours travelling at great speed fly through the air.
  • In one scene, a lounge chair transforms into a man. The transformation occurs in stages.
  • We see a dead giant spider . A man rips one of the dead spiders fangs off in an attempt to extract spider venom.
  • A skeletal arm appears suddenly out of a lake and tries to grab hold of Harry. Hundreds of creatures then rise out of the lake and swarm over Harry, pulling him under the water.
  • In a couple of scenes, Dumbledore is seen with a blackened and diseased hand.
  • Snape grasps the hand of Draco Malfoys mother. Magical bonds wrap around their hands while they recite an oath.
  • We see images of a man who is also a werewolf. Although we do not see the man transformed as a werewolf, we get a quick glimpse of the man with fangs. His general appearance is scary, threatening and menacing.

From 8-13

Children in this age group could also be disturbed by the above scenes, as well as scenes where main characters are distressed, particularly when Harry cries over Dumbledores body.

Over 13

Some children in this age group could also be disturbed by some of the scenes mentioned above.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 1 Set In 1997/98

The first of the main Potter movies to not be set at all at Hogwarts, Deathly Hallows: Part I is a slower movie and calls for some patience from the audience who are eagerly anticipating the climax.

It takes place across what would be Harry, Ron, and Hermione’s final year at Hogwarts, moving into the first half of 1998. It does, at times, feel like a stepping stone to get to the next film, but it has so much great stuff in its own right and is a good watch for those who are fans of the films when paired with the finale.

Lucius Malfoy Playfully Scolds His Son Draco With His First Line

First appearance: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Harry Potter first meets Dracos father, Lucius, while everyone is buying books in Diagon Alley for the next school year.

Lucius walks up to his son, Harry, and Ron and says, Now, now Draco, play nicely.

But in the book, the elder Malfoys first line is, Well, well, well Arthur Weasley.

The Ending Of Harry Potter And The Half

Harry Potter

As the sixth installment of the “Harry Potter” movie franchise, 2009’s “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” comes in with a brutal start: London’s Millennium Bridge is destroyed by vicious Death Eaters. Now, everyone in the Wizarding World knows the Dark Lord Voldemort has returned. Gone is the air of wonder and delight that colored the first few films. “Half-Blood Prince” continues the franchise’s descent into darker themes and events as the characters and audience grow up.

Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Cinematography, “Half-Blood Prince” stands out amongst the other films for its melancholy gray palette and artistic approach to each shot. Though there are plenty of lighthearted moments in the film as it savors the last year our trio will be at Hogwarts, the mounting threat of Voldemort hangs dangerously over their heads. This year, Professor Severus Snape has finally been appointed to the Defense Against the Dark Arts position after desiring it for many years. Meanwhile, Harry’s mind is preoccupied with three things: his blossoming romance with Ginny Weasley , his theory that Draco Malfoy is a newly minted Death Eater, and whatever mysterious plot Dumbledore has going on regarding the new Potions professor, Slughorn .

The End Of Childhood And The Beginning Of Voldemort’s Demise

For Harry, Ron, and Hermione, this movie marks the end of their admittedly rocky childhoods and their first steps toward adulthood. Much of the film is concerned with their teenage romances, but by the end, the three of them decide to not come back to Hogwarts for what is supposed to be their last year of school. After years of Voldemort hanging over their heads, they now have a path to stop him.

Other than Dumbledore’s death, the other crucial part of the ending of “Half-Blood Prince” is the revelation that Voldemort has split his soul into seven Horcruxes various magical items that keep him alive even when his body is killed. This is how he survived the night Harry’s parents died. Plus, the diary from “Chamber of Secrets” was one of those Horcruxes. Dumbledore’s plan was to hunt down each Horcrux and destroy it, but with him out of the picture, Harry decides he needs to take that responsibility on himself. Ron and Hermione join him, and they do exactly that in “Deathly Hallows.”

But first, they discover that the locket Harry and Dumbledore nearly died retrieving is actually a fake Horcrux. In it is a letter signed “R.A.B.” it’s later revealed that this is Regulus Arcturus Black, the younger brother of Sirius Black, Harry’s godfather. He was a Death Eater who defected and attempted to destroy the Horcrux but died in the process. Harry, Ron, and Hermione now have to find the real one, and all the others, to save the Wizarding World.

Maybe It’s Miscasting Maybe It’s Maybelline

First of all, Rupert Grint did a great job portraying Ron Weasley. Let’s just get that out of the way. Unfortunately, though, apart from the red hair, Grint didn’t look an awful lot like the Ron readers were introduced to in the books.

One of the major physical traits in Ron Weasley are his freckles. Unfortunately, though, Grint appears to be completely void of them. What’s more is that Ron is supposed to be much taller than Ron and Hermione. IRL, this isn’t the case with Grint.

Now, sure, this can definitely be considered nitpicking, but if Lord of the Rings fans can tear apart minute details in Peter Jackson’s adaptation, and if Star Wars fans can rip apart how Rian Johnson had Luke Skywalker portrayed in The Last Jedi , then the Potterheads are going to town on these freckles.

Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban Set In 1993/94

The Prisoner Of Azkaban is not one of those lesser Harry Potter films, though, and again, follows the same school year to school year structure as the previous two films while also taking the entire series in a new direction.

With Alfonso Cuarón at the helm, this movie has a darker tone and begins a trend of Potter films becoming more mature and more assured in their craft. Save for that bizarre final shot, the movie is gorgeous, well-acted, and many will argue the very best of the movie series.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince | Official Trailer

Or as its known colloquially, Harry Potter and the Worst Camping Trip Ever. After the events of the previous book culminating in another major characters heartbreaking death Harry vows to personally destroy every one of Voldemorts Horcruxes. These Horcruxes are objects containing pieces of Voldemorts soul, rendering him effectively immortal. Which means that if Harry wants even a chance at killing Voldemort face-to-face, hell need to locate and eliminate the Horcruxes first. Its this daunting prospect that leads to the Worst Camping Trip Ever though of course, its brightened somewhat by the presence of the ever-faithful Ron and Hermione.

To be fair, the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows arent as quotidianly miserable as the events of OotP at least we know the characters are suffering for a greater purpose. But that doesnt stop this from being, as you might expect, the darkest book in the series. From the corrupting influence of a locket that causes Ron to abandon his friends, to the tragic prophecy that Harry uncovers through more of Snapes past memories, this book truly tests the readers tolerance for beloved characters in distress.

Lupin Tries To Abandon Tonks

Remus Lupin is remembered as a beloved and heroic figure. While he is deserving of this legacy, Deathly Hallows: Part 1 chooses not to include his most shameful moment. In the book, Lupin goes to Grimmauld Place where Harry, Ron, and Hermione are hiding. He tries to convince them in letting him join their quest to destroy Voldemort. While this sounds like a great offer, Harry realizes that Lupin is trying to run away from Tonks, who is pregnant with Lupins child.

Lupin is anxious about the child being a werewolf like him and is trying to run away from his problems. Harry calls Lupin a coward for trying to leave his pregnant wife, and only later does Lupin realize that Harry is right. Lupin never comes to Grimmauld Place in the movie and never tries to leave a pregnant Tonks as he does in the book.

‘harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets’

While it might not have ranked that high on our list, mainly because it is just a bit too long, there is plenty going for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets especially the genius casting of Kenneth Branagh as the brilliantly vain Gilderoy Lockhart.

We discover in the second Harry Potter installment that Harry can speak parseltongue, and of course, it is the film where we are introduced to Dobby, everyone’s favourite house elf. In this film we also learn more about Moaning Myrtle, Tom Riddle, and of course the Weasley’s flying car… it just had a few too many spiders in it for our liking. Shudder.

Dobby First Speaks When He Greets Harry

Harry Potter

First appearance: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Harry Potter and Dobby first meet when Harry finds the house-elf in his room at the Dursleys house.

From his very first line, Dobby is kind to Harry when he says, Harry Potter, such an honor it is.

His entrance and first lines are very similar in the book as well, but he adds, So long has Dobby wanted to meet you, sir, before telling him what an honor it is.

There Was No Reason For Dumbledore’s Aggressive Reaction In The Goblet Of Fire Movie

There have been countless articles dedicated to one particular scene in the Harry Potter film series: Dumbledore’s reaction to Harry’s name being pulled from the Goblet of Fire.

The book tells us that Dumbledore questioned Harry “calmly.” The headmaster knows that Harry is about to be in serious danger, and his reaction is one of fear, not anger.

Harry Was Right About Draco But Not Quite

Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy have been rivals since Harry’s first day at Hogwarts. Draco’s always been an entitled, arrogant bully who’s gone out of his way to hurt Harry, Ron , and Hermione , but “Half-Blood Prince” takes him to new extremes and yet sets him on a new path.

For the whole school year, Harry is convinced Draco has been inducted into the Death Eater ranks, joining his father. The last scenes prove this is true: Voldemort charged Draco with killing Dumbledore and he’s got the fancy Dark Mark to show for it. He tries halfheartedly a few times, with the cursed necklace and the poisoned bottle of mead, but this time, he enacts his true plan, letting the Death Eaters into Hogwarts via the Vanishing Cabinet. They corner Dumbledore at the top of the tower, but, even though Draco’s been a horrible person for the last six years, he doesn’t have it in him to murder someone. He hesitates, even though he’s certain Voldemort will kill him and possibly his family if he doesn’t complete the task.

Dumbledore, to his credit, knew all along that Draco was plotting this, but he doesn’t want Draco to follow through because he doesn’t want his student to cross that line. He tells Draco, “Years ago, I knew a boy who made all the wrong choices,” comparing the young Slytherin to a teenage Tom Riddle.

Im a little biased as they say, because this sixth film is based on one of my favorite books in the series, and yet seems to omit the very things that make the book pop. We get almost no origins of Voldemort material and very little in terms of Snapes backstory, instead saving that for one long montage in the final picture. Moreover, and this is not necessarily a criticism (because it works for this adaptation, but the film painfully telegraphs what in the book was a jaw-dropping plot twist. Even with an overindulgence in hormonal hijinks, this one still works as a visual differentiation while Tom Feltons Malfoy shines as a young man tortured by the implications of actually doing evil as opposed to merely being evil.

The Sorting Ceremony Happens In A Different Order In The Sorcerer’s Stone Film

The Harry Potter Scene Emma Watson Was Too Embarrassed To Film

In “Sorcerer’s Stone,” the first years are sorted alphabetically in the book, but they are sorted in a random order in the film.

It would make sense if the filmmakers did this in an attempt to show our main characters back to back which still could’ve been done in alphabetical order to keep it consistent but the sorting appears to be completely random: Hermione Granger, Draco Malfoy, Susan Bones, Ronald Weasley, and Harry Potter.

The rest of the sorting isn’t even shown in the film.
