Harry Potter Hogwarts House Editions

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the original publication of the first Harry Potter book in the U.K, Bloomsbury — the publishing house for the books in the United Kingdom — began re-releasing each book in the series with special house covers. Over the course of the past few years, every book up through Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has received the House Edition treatment with four unique versions of each title. Whether you are a Hufflepuff, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, or even a Slytherin, there is a special edition of each of the first six books featuring your preferred house crest and color scheme.

Everything up through Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix can be picked up on Amazon, while the Half-Blood Prince can be purchased through Bloomsbury or for the time being. In 2000, after a seven-month search, lead actor Daniel Radcliffe was discovered by producer David Heyman and writer Steve Kloves seated just behind them in a theatre. In Heyman’s own words, “There sitting behind me was this boy with these big blue eyes. It was Dan Radcliffe. I remember my first impressions: He was curious and funny and so energetic. There was real generosity too, and sweetness. But at the same time he was really voracious and with hunger for knowledge of whatever kind.”

Radcliffe had already established himself as an actor in the 1999 BBC television production of David Copperfield in which he played the title role’s childhood years. Heyman persuaded Radcliffe’s parents to allow him to audition for the part of Harry Potter, which involved Radcliffe being filmed. Rowling was enthusiastic after viewing Radcliffe’s filmed test, saying she didn’t think there was a better choice for the part of Harry Potter.

Also in 2000, the then unknown British actors Emma Watson and Rupert Grint were selected from thousands of auditioning children to play the roles of Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, respectively. Their only previous acting experience was in school plays. Grint was eleven years old and Watson ten at the time they were cast.

St Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries is a hospital within the Harry Potter universe. Medics at the hospital are not called doctors, but are known as Healers and wear lime-green robes. Founded by famous wizard Healer Mungo Bonham, St Mungo’s is located in London. It was established to treat magical maladies, injuries or illnesses endemic to the Wizarding World. To enter the premises, one has to step through the window of what appears to be a derelict department store called Purge & Dowse Ltd. The exteriors of the hospital are red-bricked and dirty, which is the complete opposite of the interiors. Inside, everything is very neat and looks exactly as a hospital should. There are six floors. The emblem of St Mungo’s is a magic wand crossed with a bone. This is the hospital where Arthur Weasley is sent after he was attacked by Voldemort’s snake, Nagini, in the Ministry of Magic and Minerva McGonagall is hospitalised from severe stunning when Hagrid is forced out of Hogwarts. During one visit, Harry and company happen across Neville Longbottom, who has come with his grandmother to visit his parents in the long-term care ward. They also find former professor Gilderoy Lockhart there, still suffering from the effects of a backfired Memory Charm.

A Formula That Can’t Be Put Into Words

And part of the magic is just that magic.

Booklist contributing editor Ilene Cooper says the phenomenon can’t be totally explained that sometimes in publishing this kind of thing “just happens; it’s not something you can put into a formula”.

Editorial assistant in the youth department at Booklist, Briana Shemroske, says: “There’s no doubt Harry Potter combines several irresistible elements unflappable friendships, the triumph of good over evil, love over hate, humour, a world steeped in secrets and dazzling magic.

“Together, I think these things allow us to see the magic in everyday life … but then again, many of these elements have been combined before and after Potter with nowhere near the same amount of success.”

It’s clear something about this mystical formula has charmed children, with the “Harry Potter effect” eliciting excitement from children about reading in a way no other series has.

Dr Alderman says word-of-mouth has played a role in this, particularly in reaching kids without a natural interest in books.

“The easiest way to get a book in a child’s hand is a friend that they know who has read it so many children have read them and loved them, then it’s passed around,” she says.

Those of us who already own about five copies of Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them found an excuse to buy one more when the fully illustrated edition was released in November 2017. Normally, we would’ve hoped that Jim Dale — narrator of the U.S. versions of the Harry Potter books — would be back for this, but having the textbook narrated by Newt Scamander himself is far too perfect to complain.
