Watch: Ian Mckellen Explains Why He Passed On Playing Dumbledore In Harry Potter

Legendary actor Ian McKellen has held many magical roles, literally. Arguably best known as Gandolf from The Lord of the Rings films, its safe to say that McKellen has a familiarity with film wizardry and, he was almost part of another magical franchise.

During a recent appearance on the BBC show HARDtalk, McKellen discussed being offered the role of Albus Dumbledore after Richard Harris, the actor to originate the role, passed away. Ultimately, McKellen passed on the role but, nobody really knew why, until now.

When HARDtalk host Stephen Sackur brought up a quote from Harris, where he called McKellen, technically brilliant but passionless, McKellen replied by saying, Nonsense. McKellen joke, comparing playing Gandolf to Dumbledore by saying, I played the real wizard.

At that point, he dished on what happened when he was approached for the role in Harry Potter:

When they called me up and said would I be interested in being in the Harry Potter films, they didnt say in what part. I worked out what they were thinking, and I couldnt. I couldnt take over the part from an actor who Id known didnt approve of me.

The role was ultimately played by Michael Gambon for the final six films in the Harry Potter series. Regarding Gambon, McKellen joked:

Well, sometimes, when I see the posters of Mike Gambon, the actor who gloriously plays Dumbledore, I think sometimes it is me.

Sir Ian Mckellen Reveals Why He Turned Down Playing Dumbledore In Harry Potter

Few wizards are as beloved as Gandalf the Grey from Lord of the Rings or Professor Dumbledore from the Harry Potter movies, and it turns out that Sir Ian McKellen almost played both. In an interview with the BBC, the acclaimed actor shared how he was approached to take on the role of the Hogwarts headmaster, and explained why he turned down the part. Warning, spicy wizard drama ahead.

McKellen famously played the role of Gandalf in Peter Jackson’s adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkiens literary epics, The Lord of The Rings, and The Hobbit. His performances have earned him a massive following, and the title of a fantasy movie legend. However, not everyone was a fan of his acting style. The late Richard Harris the first Dumbledore actor was publicly critical of McKellen, calling his work technically brilliant, but passionless. Although McKellen said Harris opinion was nonsense, it apparently played a part in the actors decision to stay clear of Hogwarts.

In 2002 Richard Harris passed away in between filming Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets, and Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban. With McKellen proving his wizarding chops in Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring , he was obviously approached to take over the role of Dumbledore but ultimately turned down the opportunity due to Harris feelings on his craft.

McKellen did very famously play Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings movies, and will reprise that role – plus many more – in a special show at the Park Theatre this summer, which quickly sold out.

He said: Im performing at Park Theatre to help raise funds for the charity. In a short time the theatre has established itself on both the theatrical and local maps.

But with no public subsidy for core costs they need to bring in donations of around £250,000 every year just to keep the doors open.

Why Ian Mckellen Didnt Play Dumbledore

Knowing McKellens body of work, it makes perfect sense why the studio would go after him for the part of Dumbledore. He can play the role of the wise, aging mentor capably. In three Lord of the Rings films and three Hobbit films, he played J.R.R Tolkiens character, Gandalf. Its fair to say that those films wouldnt have been nearly as effective without McKellens performance. McKellen inhabited the role of Gandalf quite unlike anyone else would have been able to.

According to Bustle, after Harriss passing, McKellen was approached for an unnamed role in the Harry Potter series. Though Dumbledores name never came up, it didnt take an expert sleuth to determine who they wanted McKellen to play.

McKellen turned the part down for a somewhat surprising reason. It was because of his history with Harris, who had been critical of his acting career in the past.

When he died, he played Dumbledore, the wizard. I played the real wizardWhen they called me up and said would I be interested in being in the Harry Potter films, they wouldnt say what part, I worked out what they were thinking. And I couldnt. I couldnt take over the part from an actor who Id known didnt approve of me.

    Why Dumbledore Was Recast

Why Ian McKellen Turned Down Dumbledore Role in Harry Potter Films – IGN News

In the first two Harry Potter films, Dumbledore is portrayed by Richard Harris. Unfortunately, after the second film was completed, Harris died. This put Warner Brothers in an unenviable position of replacing a major character in their franchise. This was particularly difficult for this series, as WB knew they had at least five more films Dumbledore would need to appear in. That meant that whoever they cast would have to be the right fit for the role. Recasting again could throw off the franchises continuity even more.

The studio ended up going with veteran actor Michael Gambon. Gambon played Dumbledore starting with Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and finished out the series as the character, with his last appearance coming in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II.

    Early Life And Education

McKellen was born on 25 May 1939 in Burnley, Lancashire, the son of Margery Lois and Denis Murray McKellen. He was their second child, with a sister, Jean, five years his senior. Shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939, his family moved to Wigan. They lived there until Ian was twelve years old, before relocating to Bolton in 1951, after his father had been promoted. The experience of living through the war as a young child had a lasting impact on him, and he later said that “only after peace resumed … did I realise that war wasn’t normal.” When an interviewer remarked that he seemed quite calm in the aftermath of the 11 September attacks, McKellen said: “Well, darling, you forgetâI slept under a steel plate until I was four years old.”

McKellen attended Bolton School , of which he is still a supporter, attending regularly to talk to pupils. McKellen’s acting career started at Bolton Little Theatre, of which he is now the patron. An early fascination with the theatre was encouraged by his parents, who took him on a family outing to Peter Pan at the Opera House in Manchester when he was three. When he was nine, his main Christmas present was a fold-away wood and bakelite Victorian theatre from Pollocks Toy Theatres, with cardboard scenery and wires to push on the cut-outs of Cinderella and of Laurence Olivier‘s Hamlet.

Why Sir Ian Mckellen Turned Down The Role Of Dumbledore In Harry Potter

There is a part of me that always assumed Sir Ian McKellen took over the role of Dumbledore in the Harry Potter movies following the death of Richard Harris, who played the Hogwarts headmaster in the first two films. Of course, McKellen didnt take over the role went to Michael Gambon but it just makes sense, doesnt it? Hes a wizard at playing wizards, after all. The 82-year old grew his fanbase by a million-fold when he joined The Lord of the Rings films as Gandalf back in the early 2000s. He had the perfect look for this sort of role, so you probably wont be surprised to learn that he was indeed approached to play Dumbledore after Harris passed away.

Why didnt he accept? Theres an interesting story behind that. In an interview with the BBC, McKellen said that there was some drama with the late Harris that prevented him from playing Harrys mentor.

    Drama, you say?

Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban

At the beginning of the third novel, Dumbledore is forced to accept Dementors onto his school’s grounds for the protection of his students from Sirius Black, a supposed murderer and accessory to murder, who had escaped from Azkaban. After Black’s breach into Hogwarts, Dumbledore issues orders to close every entrance to the school and grounds. After Harry falls off his broomstick during a Quidditch match because of the Dementors, Dumbledore becomes uncharacteristically angry with them and uses his wand to cause Harry to levitate safely to the ground. Later in that book, Dumbledore suggests that Hermione use her Ministry-approved Time-Turner to go back three hours to save Buckbeak the hippogriff and Black from their unjust executions.

Across its eight films, the Harry Potter franchise built up one of the largest British acting ensembles in film history, but one actor who never appeared was Sir Ian McKellen who has now shed some light on why that piece of casting never came to fruition.

The British acting icon was considered for the role of Hogwarts headmaster Professor Albus Dumbledore after original actor Richard Harris passed away in 2002, however McKellen has revealed that it was he who didn’t feel comfortable stepping into the role due to Harris’ previous comments about him.

McKellen told BBC’s Hardline: “When he died – he played Dumbledore, the wizard – I played the real wizard of course – but when they called me up and said would I be interested in being in the Harry Potter films, they didnt say what part..”

It was here where McKellen recalled that Harris had branded him and fellow thespians Derek Jacobi and Kenneth Branagh technically brilliant, but passionless.

I worked out what they were thinking and I couldnt, he continued. I couldnt take over the part from an actor who Id known hadnt approved of me.

Harris passed away after second film Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and eventually, Michael Gambon stepped into the role for the remainder of the franchise.

McKellen will reprise the role of Gandalf in an upcoming one-man theatre production.
