Judianna Makovsky served as the costume designer. She re-designed the Quidditch robes, having initially planned to use those shown on the cover of the American book, but deemed them “a mess.” Instead, she dressed the Quidditch players in “preppie sweaters, 19th-century fencing breeches and arm guards.” Production designer Stuart Craig built the sets at Leavesden Studios, including Hogwarts Great Hall, basing it on many English cathedrals. Although originally asked to use an existing old street to film the Diagon Alley scenes, Craig decided to build his own set, comprising Tudor, Georgian and Queen Anne architecture.

Columbus originally planned to use both animatronics and CGI animation to create the magical creatures, including Fluffy. For the first time since the 1970s, there has arisen a marketing force terrifying enough in its inertia to rock the house of LucasArts to its core. Yes indeed, Harry Potter has arrived, and backed by the omnipotent J.K.Rowling has burst on to the gaming market with the force of… well, a million eager children’s piggy banks. And that’s not even beginning to mention the countless hordes of adults who either pretend to read it to be with their kids, or just admit that they’re damn good books.

The game versions of the best-selling novels certainly have a lot to live up to, not least since they’re game adaptations of film adaptations of books – not a genre that has the best pedigree. This hasn’t stopped them rocketing into the number one slot in the all-format charts in the UK, and in fact, it’s not even a matter of concern, because the PC version at least is really very good indeed.

It is hard to find his way to classes due to the hundred and forty-two changing staircases and tricky doorways. The people in the Hogwarts portraits have been no help to him, for they ignore some students and visit each other, nor have the ghosts, who always scare Harry when they glide through a door he is trying to open. Perusing the restricted section in the library, Harry discovers that the Sorcerer’s Stone produces the Elixir of Life, which gives its drinker the gift of immortality. After realizing that Voldemort might be after the stone, Albus Dumbledore had it moved it to Hogwarts for safekeeping.

The Story Isn’t Just About Harry

Despite what the series’ name might suggest, however, Harry Potter isn’t the only important person in this story. Though he proves himself a hero all by his lonesome, Harry would never reach Voldemort or bypass the challenges which preceded the Dark Wizard if it wasn’t for his friends Hermione and Ron. Of course, as the two other main characters of the “Harry Potter” series, the two stalwart allies put on their own displays of heroism in the film’s final hours.

Of the trio, Hermione is the first to receive an opportunity to be a hero. After the two sneak into the series of chambers meant to guard the Sorcerer’s Stone, they encounter a new kind of trap. The floor of one chamber is no floor at all, but rather a deadly plant known as Devil’s Snare, which strangles struggling victims. Ever the book-worm, however, Hermione is the only one with the knowledge and courage to relax herself. She and Harry pass through unharmed. Unfortunately, Ron is not so composed, and Hermione has to show her strengths again by recalling a light spell capable of repelling Devil’s Snare.
