Rowling just cleared up the whole Hermione pronunciation debate and the popular fan theory that goes with it.
How we pronounce Hermione has been settled for some time now. Ever since the first Harry Potter movie came out the pronunciation debate was pretty much done and dusted.
However, before the movies were released, the debate was not settled and was a regularly visited topic. This is where the fan theory comes in.

Many fans suspected that J.K. Rowling attempted to clear up the issue over how to pronounce Hermione in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. While Hermione was seeing Victor Krum, the Drumstrang student who competed in the Triwizard Tournament against Harry, she tried to teach him how to pronounce her name.
The passage in the book goes like this.
Hermione was now teaching Krum to say her name properly he kept calling her Hermy-own.
Her my oh nee, she said, slowly and clearly.
Herm own ninny.
Close enough, she said, catching Harrys eye and grinning.
In The Hellenistic Period
As Greek culture and influence spread following the conquests of , a period of or saw many traditional Greek deities identified with foreign counterparts. In , for example, the Egyptian god was identified by Greek speakers as the Egyptian form of Hermes. The two gods were worshiped as one at the Temple of Thoth in Khemenu, a city which became known in Greek as . Hermione first appears in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone when she meets Harry and Ron on the Hogwarts Express, where she mocks Ron for his inability to perform a spell to turn his rat yellow. She proves just how much she knows by declaring that she memorized all the textbooks by heart. She constantly annoys her peers with her knowledge, so Harry and Ron initially consider her arrogant, especially after she criticises Ron’s incantation of the Levitation Charm. Recent analysis by Oxford University Press of a database of 33m words written by children aged seven to 13 has uncovered a wealth of surprising insights into the way that young people tackle spelling. As an English teacher who has often wondered whether it’s just the kids I teach who think the word ‘something’ ends with a ‘k’, I was delighted to be part of OUP’s research team. And there was much to celebrate in our findings hearteningly for those who worry about the increasing ubiquity of ‘txt spk’ in modern language. The research suggests that children not only understood how to spell words correctly in full, but used ‘txt spk’ in their stories only when context demanded. So why were they spelling common words such as ‘can’t’ wrong? And what can teachers and parents do to help them get them right?
