All The Harry Potter Books In Order: Your Jk Rowling Reading List
Of all the zeitgeist-defining fiction to come out of the past twenty years, perhaps none has been more universally beloved than the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. An incredibly imagined fantasy bildungsroman, it follows the eponymous boy wizard as he attends the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and contends with his destiny to fight the Dark Lord, Voldemort. Fortunately, he always has clever, loyal friends Ron and Hermione by his side plus the invaluable mentorship of eccentric but wise Hogwarts headmaster, Dumbledore.
As fellow Potterheads will know, its virtually impossible to rank these books from best to worst, since each one is brilliant in its own way. Thats why weve decided to simply present all the Harry Potter books in order of chronology/publication, hitting the highlights for longtime fans to happily reminisce and to help budding fans get a taste of the series genuine magic.
Heres a quick catalog of the series, so that you know what youre in for:
Quidditch Was Based On Basketball
Quidditch, the sport of choice at Hogwarts, resembles flying lacrosse in the Harry Potter films. One might imagine that the British Rowling thought of cricket when creating the game. After all, the Quidditch brooms look a little bit like bats. Actually, her inspiration was the all-American basketball. In her Amazon interview, Rowling explained, I wanted a sport for wizards, and I’d always wanted to see a game where there was more than one ball in play at the same time. The idea just amused me. The Muggle sport it most resembles is basketball, which is probably the sport I enjoy watching most.
Thanks to the popularity of the books, Quidditch has become an actual sport, with teams at many universities and its own world cup tournament. Rowling approves since she put a lot of effort into making it a fully realized sport: I had a lot of fun making up the rules and I’ve still got the notebook I did it in, complete with diagrams, and all the names for the balls I tried before I settled on Snitch, Bludgers and Quaffle.

Harry Potters Popularity Completely Changed The Publishing Industry And The Effect Spilled Over To Hollywood
Here are just two of the ways Harry Potter changed publishing, and how those changes affected the rest of pop culture:
1) The books made it possible to publish long works aimed at children. Prior to Harry Potter, the accepted wisdom was that kids didnt have the attention span to read long books. And anyway, the thinking went, kids werent buying their own books. Their parents were paying for everything, and they would never be willing to pay an extra dollar or two for a longer book, with its extra printing and binding.
But after Harry Potter became an unstoppable cultural force, and it was clear that fans would keep buying thebooks no matter what, it started to expand. The last four volumes of the series are all doorstoppers that clock in at well over 700 pages each.
Publishers and childrens writers took notice. Booklist found that middle-grade novels expanded 115.5 percent between 2006 and 2016, the decade in which the Potter novels were at their longest.
2) Harry Potter made childrens literature an unstoppable force. Before Harry Potter, childrens literature was often considered an afterthought. Sales were falling. Children, analysts would say wistfully, just werent reading anymore.
Is Jk Rowling The Richest Woman In England
According to the Sunday Times Rich List, her net worth has increased by £45 million in the past year to £795 million. However, when compared to some of the other high-earners on the list, this is a drop in the bucket. Kirsten Rausing is the wealthiest woman in the United Kingdom, with a fortune of £12.1 billion.

- Harry realising his mistakes in regards to his second son
When Harry picked Albus up from King’s Cross, who had returned from a year at Hogwarts, he was surprised to find Albus distant and colder. This distance was in direct response to the pressure Albus felt regarding Harry’s legacy and the expectations that others put on him because of it. Albus and Scorpius Malfoy became fast friends during the year, as they were kindred spirits they both carry a burden stemming from their family identity and feel that they are misfits and losers in comparison with the other students at Hogwarts. Harry did not like this and he questioned why Albus was content to have only the one friend. Their relationship would stay strained for the next couple of years to come.

In September 2019, Harry took Albus to King’s Cross yet again where he gave Albus the permission slip he needed to visit Hogsmeade. Albus destroyed the slip by burning it, stating that he had no wish to go to Hogsmeade and left his father behind. This in turn caused Harry to become angry with him. Their father-son relationship continues to deteriorate, going from bad to worse.

Years Later: The Enduring Magic Of Harry Potter And The Sorcerers Stone
Yer a wizard, Harry. Its been twenty years since these words were uttered to an impressionable, bewildered young boy whose world, along with all of ours, would never be the same. Twenty years since terms like muggle, Gryffindor, and Quidditch would become so intrinsically rooted in pop culture society, that its now impossible to imagine a time when they didnt exist. Twenty years since children dreamed of getting that coveted invitation to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry that only exists in the world of Harry Potter.
It was June of 1997 when a then unknown J.K. Rowling released the first book in the seven-part series, Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone . By 1999, it was at the top of the New York Times Bestseller list, where it remained for the better part of the following two years. By the time filming began for the first movie adaptation in 2000, it had already garnered a fervent fanbase that would only continue to grow.

Completion Of The Series
In December 2005, Rowling stated on her web site, “2006 will be the year when I write the final book in the Harry Potter series.” Updates then followed in her online diary chronicling the progress of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, with the release date of 21 July 2007. The book itself was finished on 11 January 2007 in the Balmoral Hotel, Edinburgh, where she scrawled a message on the back of a bust of Hermes. It read: “J. K. Rowling finished writing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in this room on 11 January 2007.”
Rowling herself has stated that the last chapter of the final book was completed “in something like 1990”. In June 2006, Rowling, on an appearance on the British talk show Richard & Judy, announced that the chapter had been modified as one character “got a reprieve” and two others who previously survived the story had in fact been killed. On 28 March 2007, the cover art for the Bloomsbury Adult and Child versions and the Scholastic version were released.
In September 2012, Rowling mentioned in an interview that she might go back to make a “director’s cut” of two of the existing Harry Potter books.
Best Harry Potter Books
Selecting the best of the Harry Potter books is akin to choosing among star-studded things. Why, every book in the said series is mind-blowing! However, the first three novels are the best, perhaps by virtue of chronological order. Philosophers Stone, which has been discussed previously, is the cream of the crop.
Author J.K. Rowlings vouchsafed the masterpiece Chamber of Secrets to her readers the book revolves around Harry Potter, unhappy with his hosts, after his encounter with the eccentric creature which delivers a doomy prediction.
In Prisoner of Azkaban, which is a literary dessert, figuratively, the prediction proves to be true after Potter returns to Hogwarts for another school term. A deadly prisoner and escapee is being tracked by prison guards who nourish themselves with others souls. In Potters fools paradise, Hogwarts is seemingly a haven.

Harry observing the Mirror of Erised
Christmas is approaching. Malfoy teases Harry about having to stay at Hogwarts for the holiday, as he does not have parents. Harry, however, is looking forward to spending Christmas away from the Dursleys, especially because Ron is also staying at Hogwarts, as Mr and Mrs Weasley are going to visit Rons older brother Charlie in Romania. The day before the holidays, Hermione tears Ron and Harry away from a conversation with Hagrid to look in the library for more information about Nicolas Flamel. The librarian, Madam Pince, catches Harry prowling around the restricted-books section of the library and kicks him out.
Harry Potter And The Cursed Child
While not part of the original seven-book series, Cursed Child and the accompanying stage play have become a generally accepted addition to the Harry Potter canon. This 336-page text picks up where the Deathly Hallows epilogue left off, with Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Malfoy sending their unfortunately named kids off to Hogwarts Harrys son Albus and Malfoys son Scorpius serve as our protagonists this time around. Upon arrival at Hogwarts, the boys are both sorted into Slytherin and forge an unlikely friendship, which naturally causes tension between Albus and Harry over the next few years.
After a fight with his father, Albus overhears Cedric Diggorys father Amos asking Harry to use a more powerful version of a Time Turner to go back in time and rescue his son. When Harry refuses, Albus enlists Scorpius to help him save Cedric, with the aid of Diggorys niece Delphi. However, as anyone whos seen Back to the Future can attest, messing with timelines is never a good idea especially in the wizarding world. Things are further complicated by the fact that Delphi is not who she says she is, and may have sinister ulterior motives when it comes to rewriting history.
