The matter of how Harry Potter survived Lord Voldemorts Killing Curse in the Forbidden Forest, at the end of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, can be confusing for even hardcore fans of the books and films.

Harry had a long-standing connection to the Killing Curse. His first encounter with the Avada Kedavra incantation gave him a reputation that would carry on through his time at Hogwarts. However, it was Harrys later brush with death in the Forbidden Forest during Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows that confused readers and watchers of the series unsurprisingly, since the explanation involves a complex exchange of spells and Voldemort ultimately being the architect of his own downfall.

It Goes By Many Names

The Elder Wand has also been known as the Wand of Destiny, a title evocative of the grandeur and power that has enticed so many wizards. Other names have been bestowed upon it through the years. Some were derived from simple translations, such as the Eldrun Wand, which was the name given by Barnabas Deverill . It was also dubbed the Deathstick by Loxias, who ensured that the instrument lived up to its title, and the Dark wizard Godelot called it My most wicked and subtle friend, with body of Ellhorn, who knowes ways of magick moste evile. It didnt catch on.

Known Masters Of The Elder Wand

Ron Weasley

The Elder Wand was the most powerful wand in existence. Its owner could have used it to cast spells more powerful than any believed to be magically possible. For example, Harry Potter was able to repair his regular Phoenix feather wand using the Elder Wand in 1998, even though broken wands were held, by experts such as Garrick Ollivander, to be damaged beyond magical repair, and despite not having any training in wandlore. Both Ollivander and Voldemort believed that the wand’s legendary powers is the only one capable of overpowering the bond between the latter and Harry, which created such an effect that Harry managed to overcome Voldemort’s attempt to kill him.

Voldemort casting the Shield penetration spell with the Elder Wand, to breach Hogwarts protection

When Lord Voldemort used the Elder Wand without mastering it he claimed that the wand only unleashed his regular level of magic and not the unbeatable effects it was rumoured to possess. It’s unknown if the wand would work this way for another who hasn’t mastered it though, as Voldemort has used the wands of others in the past with no handicap, it’s likely that this is his own power rather than that of the Elder Wand.

It did have one redeeming quality like all other wands, however: it refused to harm or kill its master nor those under sacrificial protection.

Its Design Is Unusual In Almost Every Respect

Virtually every detail of the Elder Wand hints at something unique or exceptional by a wandmakers standards.

Elder wood is not a favoured material in wand-making. However, it is still included in Garrick Ollivanders notes:

Only a highly unusual person will find their perfect match in elder, and on the rare occasion when such a pairing occurs, I take it as certain that the witch or wizard in question is marked out for a special destiny.Wand Woods: Writing by J.K. Rowling

Stranger still, the Elder Wands core substance is Thestral hair. There are no Ollivander notes to go by it wasnt a material he chose to work with but we do know that Thestrals have a strong connection with death, plus the magical properties of invisibility, flight and an uncanny ability to find their destination. How this affects the wand is uncertain, but it does hint towards some seriously powerful magic.

Why Did Harry Break The Elder Wand

Though Harry Potter is the rightful owner of the elder wand, after defeating Draco Malfoy. He resisted the urge to keep the wand for himself, and he broke it instead. Though the reason for this was not explained, some reasons come to mind. We should not forget the darkness that comes with owning the wand. Yes, Harry had control over the deathly hallows, but you could not tell how powerful they were combined. The death trailing the wand is another good reason to destroy instead of using the wand.

Some great wizards like Grindelwald, Albus Dumbledore, and Severus Snape were all defeated to attain ownership of the wand. Dumbledore arrested Grindewald, Snape killed Dumbledore, Voldermort killed snape, while Harry killed Voldermort. Apart from these, previous wizards that have used the wand had too much power, and it consumed them. Owning the elder wand would also make Harry a likely target to those that want to own the wand.

If Harry kept the wand to himself, it must be won from him by beating him in a duel, and we have seen the length wizards can go to make themselves more powerful. Though Harry broke the wand because of the negativity and death that come with it. Harry might have used the wand for good deeds, but there is no telling what might happen later. More questions require answers. In the book, Harry did not break the wand, instead, he returned it to the tomb of Hogwarts Greatest Headmaster Professor Albus Dumbledore. Nicolas Flamel’s Quest For Immortality

Nicolas Flamel didn’t just create the Philosopher’s stone out of thin air: It took an endless amount of power and magic to accomplish what so many had tried. Like Merlin, Flamel has attained as much fame in the Muggle world as the wizarding world, which is a feat in itself. Now, Muggles don’t necessarily know that he was magical. The idea of turning metals into gold and finding the elixir of life were once considered matters of chemistry and science, not magic. If only they knew.

We briefly see Flamel use his wand in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. It seems he might have used alchemy on the wand itself, as it has a gold band on the hilt, connecting it to some kind of bone. While its exact size, core, and wood are unknown, we don’t need those details to comprehend that it’s one of the most incredible wands in Potter lore.

Not only does it help Flamel perform unheard-of feats of alchemy, it proudly and loyally accompanies him over the duration of several lifetimes over 600 years, to be exact. But beyond Flamel’s power is his compassion. He’s the only immortality seeker to put someone else’s needs above his own, destroying his immortality along with his wife Perenelle’s to save Harry in the first book. That’s strength in its own right.

Its Loyalty Lies With The Strongest Wizard

Snape is the Master of Voldemort’s Elder Wand | Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 2

This fact is what makes most wizards believe that one must kill in order to take hold of the Elder Wand. However, its loyalty lying with the strongest wizard is not simply calculated by the spells that are cast out of it. In fact, this wand will not give up its master so easily if the master has put up a good fight.

That is why the Elder Wand never relinquished its full power to Voldemort who mistakenly thought that it is truly an unbeatable wand . Voldemort believed that being in possession of the wand absolutely made him the most powerful wizard. However, Harrys strength, persistence, and willingness to surrender proved he was more worthy of the wand, which is what helped him defeat the Dark Lord.

How Could Dumbledore Ever Become The Owner Of The Elder

According to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Gregorovitch was once the owner of the Elder Wand. Grindelwald stole the Elder Wand from Gregorovitch without defeating him in a duel. So it would seem Grindelwald actually never became the real owner of the Elder Wand, therefore Dumbledore, who defeated Grindelwald in a duel, would also have never become the real owner, which means neither Draco nor Harry would have ever mastered the Elder Wand.

Wasnt Gregorovitch killed by Voldemort? Wouldnt that make Voldemort the real master of the Elder Wand, and therefore able to kill Harry?

  • But Grindelwald has overpowered Gregorowitsch because he shocked him with a stupor just at the moment he jumped out of the window So it isnt only that he stole it, he overpowered Gregorowitsch with his own wand. user58695

Defeat isnt limited to death. Harry won it from Draco just by overpowering him and taking his other wand. Death is only part of the wands history. Its not necessary.

Well, you are making the same mistake Voldemort made. The ownership of the Elder Wand doesnt change by murdering only.

Wands Of The Hogwarts Founders

We know very little about the Hogwarts founders‘ wands, but there’s no denying that they were four of the most powerful witches and wizards of all time. It takes an unheard-of amount of magic and skill to create a castle as stunning and mysterious as Hogwarts, with all of its hidden charms and secrets. Centuries later, Godric Gryffindor’s skills in battle are still regaled to this day, as is his alleged creation of a sentient hat that basically serves as a magical personality quiz.

While Salazar Slytherin’s anti-muggle rhetoric caused him to break rank with the other founders, his Legilimency powers were famed, along with his ability to speak to snakes a power he passed on through his bloodline to Voldemort . Additionally, it’s no easy task hiding an entire secret chamber inside a magic castle. According to Wizarding World, the wand that helped him do it was buried on the castle’s grounds, where it became a snakewood tree with “restorative powers.” So, it’s safe to say Slytherin probably had a snakewood wand.

The Elder Wand is made with the core of a Thestral’s hair, making it a mighty yet tricky wand to master. Unlike other wands, it connects only with a user who has bested the previous owner. For example, Malfoy was tasked with killing Dumbledore by Voldemort. While he was unable to complete his task, he could disarm the wizard, making him the rightful owner. This would ultimately prove to be Voldemort’s downfall as he wielded the wand even though it was never technically his and, therefore, made him weaker.

Does The Length Of A Wand Matter

Many wandmakers think the length of the wand correlates to the height of the witch or wizard. However, Ollivander theorized that the wands length more closely resembled their personality and the longer the wand, the bigger the persons ego.

Therefore, a shorter wand means that person is lacking something in their character.

Typically wands are between 9 and 14 inches long, but the shortest wand is 6 inches, and any over 15 inches are scarce. Although technically, they do go up to 18 inches in length!

In theory, longer wands are more powerful but less accurate, and shorter ones have better accuracy but less power. Its said that Dark wizards prefer longer wands because of this.

And, Lord Voldemorts wand was 13 ½ inches.
