Missing Characters And Plots

There are so many variations between the book and movie, it’s hard to capture them all. But some other major points/characters that the movie skipped over.

  • The Dursleys
  • The former professional Quidditch player Ludo Bagman
  • Rita Skeeter being an animagus
  • Professor Trelawney and Divination classes
  • Veelas
  • Viktor Krum being duck-footed and awkward
  • The ever-troubling case of Hermione’s hair just not being frizzy enough
  • And most importantly, Oliver Wood does not attend the Quidditch World Cup

To be fair to the makers of the movie, it’s gotta be pretty tough to condense a 734-page book to a 150-minute movie. But feel free to check out the comprehensive list of book-to-movie differences compiled by the Harry Potter wikia. Or why not spot the differences yourself this weekend by watching ABC Family’s Harry Potter marathon. Maybe you can even make a drinking game of it, since you’re all grown up now.

Warning: spoilers for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire are more abundant than gnomes at the Burrow. Proceed with caution!

Harry Potter never asked for help with the Triwizard Tournament. And he certainly never asked to be assisted by Death Eater Barty Crouch junior disguised as famous Auror Mad-Eye Moody. In fact, he never actually asked for his name to be entered into the Goblet of Fire in the first place. Its complicated.

Lets take this step-by-step and explore how we think Harry would have fared in the Triwizard Tournament without Mad-Eye Moodys help.

Oh, and you might notice weve referred to Barty Crouch junior as Mad-Eye Moody in the title of this article to save people from spoilers. For consistency, well be referring to Barty Crouch junior as Mad-Eye Moody throughout, just to put you in the same position as Harry and keep you on your toes.

Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was Rowlings first screenplay, and it shows. If you squint, theres a good movie within Fantastic Beasts about the rise of fascism in the Wizarding World in the 1920s. Unfortunately, studios have to sell stuffed animals. So Fantastic Beasts wraps its dark Grindelwald origin story inside a movie about a dorky magical creature enthusiast scurrying across 1920s New York City trying to round up adorable critters. The platypus-esque Nifflers are, undeniably, cute, and the other CGI creatures are quite impressive. But the bipolar movie never quite ties the two plots together.

Theres hope that Rowling could rectify this issue in future films. One of Rowlings best talents is actually intricate plottingthe early Harry Potter books and their adaptations would often weave plots together to make a more cohesive whole. The author would patiently plant the seeds of a plot point in an early novel that would then bloom in the later books to stunning effect. Perhaps its unfair to judge Fantastic Beasts on just the first two entries . But so far the franchise has failed to cast a spell over its audience.

Harry Potter: How Moody Put Harrys Name In The Goblet Of Fire

Mad-Eye Moody managed to alter the Triwizard Tournament in Goblet of Fire by adding Harry Potter as a competitor, but it took an intricate plan.

Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody managed to alter the Triwizard Tournament in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by adding the titular figure as a competitor, but it took a well-orchestrated plan. Brendan Gleeson made his franchise debut in the fourth installment of the film series based on the novel series by author J.K. Rowling. Although Mad-Eye served as a key member for the remainder of the Harry Potter franchise, he wasn’t exactly himself in his introductory appearance. In fact, another figure was impersonating him all along.

Mad-Eye was a legendary Auror and a member of the original Order of the Phoenix before accepting a teaching position at Hogwarts prior to the events of Goblet of Fire. Albus Dumbledore hired the wizard as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, seeing as he was skilled in battling the specific method of magic. During his first year as the DADA professor, Mad-Eye demonstrated the three Unforgivable Curses in front of his students. He also guided Harry Potter during the Triwizard Tournament, but he ended up having ulterior motives.

Differences From The Book

With the Goblet of Fire novel almost twice the length of Prisoner of Azkaban, the writers and producers reduced certain scenes and concepts to make the transition from page to screen. Director Mike Newell described the problem as one of “compressing a huge book into the compass of a movie”. This was achieved by “putting aside” all the components of the novel which did not directly relate to Harry and his journey.

Goblet of Fire is the first film adaptation not to begin at Privet Drive after the opening sequence, Harry awakens at the Burrow on the morning of the Quidditch World Cup.

The gameplay at the Quidditch World Cup was removed for timing reasons, leaving an abrupt temporal jump which some reviewers considered awkward or “rushed”. In the book, Harry and many of the Weasleys support Ireland, while in the film Harry and Ron support Bulgaria. Nonetheless, both of them admire the Bulgarian seeker Viktor Krum.

Costume And Set Design

Costume designer returned as costume designer for Goblet of Fire.:39 Temime made the Beauxbatons uniforms out of french blue silk,:13 which stood out from the muted colours of the other schools. The fabric of the uniforms “clings to their form, in complete contrast to the restrictive uniforms the Hogwarts girls wear.” The hat was designed by millinerPhilip Treacy. The Durmstrang uniform was made of thick wool,:13 with crimson robes and fur hats and capes. Temime drew inspiration from Hapsburg and Russian folklore. For the Yule Ball, Temime created more than 300 costumes. Hermione’s dress, which took three months to make, was designed to be a “fairy-tale dress”, balancing “sweetness and allure” and keeping it “very prudish”, in order for it to be “slightly sexy” while still appropriate for a teenager. Moody’s coat was inspired by spaghetti westerns, with a team spending a week “aging and distressing the coat to give it a lifetime’s worth of wear.”

Tropes Exclusive To This Book Or At Least Especially Prominent:

  • 8.8:invoked Karkaroff gives Harry’s performance in the first task four points out of a possible ten, in contrast to the eight Madame Maxime gives him, the nines from Mr. Crouch and Dumbledore, and Bagman’s definitely partial ten. Naturally, this provokes outrage from Ron, who complains that Karkaroff had given Krum ten points despite causing his dragon to crush several of her real eggs, but Harry doesn’t mind too much he’s too happy that Ron is speaking to him again.
  • Academy of Evil: Durmstrang, though the school itself is more of a Dark Is Not Evil place. Karkaroff is a former Death Eater, and Draco Malfoy claims they don’t admit Muggle-borns, but most of the actual students seem to be decent people. In some scenes, they come off as less snobbish than their Beauxbatons counterparts and nicer than the Slytherins.
  • Accidental Misnaming: Crouch can’t seem to remember that Percy’s last name is “Weasley” and not “Weatherby”, despite being on first name basis with Arthur and how much Percy takes the opportunity to say how great Mr. Crouch is. Fred and George have a lot of fun with this. Everyone seems to miss the Out-of-Character Alert.
  • Adult Fear:
  • Also at the World Cup, the Death Eaters attack Muggle children, while wizard children are nearby. The Muggle children get their memories modified, but the wizard kids
  • Your son dies when competing in a sporting event.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: Harry is horrified to find out that Bartemius Crouch, Jr. was subjected to a Dementor’s Kiss.
  • Harry Potter And The Sorcerers Stone

Though its probably the truest book-to-movie adaptation, the Sorcerers Stone, with its Matilda-esque tone, doesnt live up to the power of the rest of the series. In retrospect, the CGI is clunky, and the one-liners are too cute by half. Still, Christopher Columbus was also able to capture, well, the magic of that first introduction into Hogwarts. As soon as those owls begin to invade the Dursleys neighborhood, the Wizarding World suddenly seemed more accessible than it ever did on the page.

At the time of its premiere, Sorcerers success was no guarantee. Fantasy adaptations like The Golden Compass and Eragon had recently flopped at the box office. But Columbus movies managed to do right by the books: Hogwarts awed quidditch looked exactly as fans had imagined it and the school uniforms became instantly iconic. Columbus team also made some fantastic casting decisions that would pay off years later, like recruiting Alan Rickman to play Severus Snape and Maggie Smith to tackle Minerva McGonagall. And they found a trio of child actors who would, over the next decade, hold their own in scenes with some of Englands most talented thespians.

    Harry Potter And The Half

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Book fans tend to criticize the Half-Blood Prince adaptation because it leaves out crucial details about Tom Riddle and why he decides to create the Horcruxes. As a result, the burden falls upon the already plot-heavy sequels to communicate the importance of these magical objects. Its frustrating to watch Harry hunt down and destroy parts of Tom Riddles soul like hes stumbling across random Bosses in a video game when Rowling gave each Horcrux a meaningful backstory in the books that rendered Voldemort a more complex character.

More than any other movie, Half-Blood Prince seems to miss the point of the books. Take the pivotal scene in which Snape kills Dumbledore. Although Harrys single defining trait as a character is his willingness to rush rashly and headlong into danger for his loved ones, the movie-version of Harry stands by and does nothing while Dumbledore is murdered. In the book, Dumbledore has put Harry under a spell that prevents him from moving to interfere with Snapea detail skipped over in the movie. Exacerbating matters is Michael Gambons performance as Dumbledore, which comes across as cold and commanding rather than gentle and eccentric.

HARRY, DID YAH PUT YAH NAME IN DA GOBLET OF FIYAH?!
Finally, I wish to impress upon any of you wishing to compete that this tournament is not to be entered into lightly. Once a champion has been selected by the Goblet of Fire, he or she is obliged to see the tournament through to the end. The placing of your name in the goblet constitutes a binding, magical contract. There can be no change of heart once you have become a champion. Please be very sure, therefore, that you are wholeheartedly prepared to play before you drop your name into the goblet. Now, I think it is time for bed. Good night to you all.

Dumbledore introducing the Goblet of Fire

Albus Dumbledore drew an Age Line around the Goblet during the 1994 Tournament to prevent students under the age of seventeen from entering their name. However, the Goblet was fooled into thinking there were more than three schools competing by a powerful Confundus Charm cast on it by Barty Crouch Jnr, disguised as Alastor Moody.

This resulted in the selection of a fourth Champion, Harry Potter, into the Tournament alongside Cedric Diggory, Fleur Delacour, and Viktor Krum. The flames of the Goblet went out and would not ignite again until the next tournament, much to Igor Karkaroff‘s frustration, who wanted to reselect champions until each school had two representatives to even things out. It was later revealed that Crouch was working for Lord Voldemort as part of a plan to use Harry’s blood to revive the Dark Lord.
