A Chronological Guide To The Harry Potter And Fantastic Beasts Movies

Want to watch the Harry Potter movies in order in 2021? The Harry Potter films have remained firm favorites since the final movie was released back in 2011 that’s because JK Rowling’s books about the boy wizard are evergreen reading for kids, and that the iconography has become a part of the wider pop culture landscape, from theme parks to video games.

The Harry Potter movies, meanwhile, remain a mostly faithful and enjoyable way to ingest the story of the series. While they arguably get a little too dark later on, reflected in changes in visual style to remove some of the charm from its setting, the first three in particular form a great arc. While movies one and two are like Spielberg-style kids’ films, the third is moodier but more dramatically satisfying.

As a collective, they make for a great binge-watching experience. But how do you watch the Harry Potter movies in order, both chronologically and in the way they were originally released? Below, we’ve got you covered, and we’ll also explain where you can stream the Harry Potter films are the time of writing.

Slug And Jiggers Apothecary

The Apothecary sells scales, potions and potion ingredients. The shop is quite fascinating despite its very bad smell . The inside includes barrels of slimy stuff on the floor, jars of herbs, dried roots and bright powders on the shelves, and bundles of feathers, strings of fangs and snarled claws hanging from the ceiling. Harry regularly buys ingredients, as well as his scales, from the Apothecary.

Some of the ingredients available are silver unicorn horns , glittery-black beetle eyes , and Dragon liver .

Hogwarts School Of Witchcraft And Wizardry

Along with Harry, we’re introduced the magical world for the first time. And it’s no wonder that Harry’s so excited to get to Hogwarts, which is a school inside an actual castle. Whoa. When Harry and the other first-years first approach Hogwarts by boat, they get an intimidating and majestic sight: Perched atop a high mountain on the other side , its windows sparkling in the starry sky, was a vast castle with many turrets and towers. The castle is massive: “he entrance hall was so big you could have fit the whole of the Dursleys’ house in it” . Inside, the students are welcomed into a vast enclave full of intellectual treasures and secret passageways. It takes the students forever just to figure out where to go when:There were a hundred and forty-two staircases at Hogwarts: wide, sweeping ones, narrow, rickety ones some that led somewhere different on a Friday some with a vanishing step halfway up that you had to remember to jump. It was also very hard to remember where anything was, because it all seemed to move around a lot. The halls are full of classrooms, secret corridors, and trapdoors, and some parts of the castle are even forbidden. And yet, Harry feels at home here in ways he never did at the Dursleys’ house, eating the best food and having the best experiences of his life. He’s finally found a community.

Laws Concerning Magical Creatures

In both the book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and the film of the same name, laws governing magical creatures are often referenced. Like any laws, these are changed over time, and vary from country to country.

There are three distinct definitions for all magical creatures given in the Fantastic Beasts book, which are “Beasts”, “Beings” and “Spirits” which were defined in 1811 by the British Minister for Magic. “Beings” are defined as “any creature that has sufficient intelligence to understand the laws of the magical community and to bear part of the responsibility in shaping those laws”.

Laws have been created surrounding the management of magical creatures, largely for the purposes of their protection, but also to protect wizards from dangerous creatures, govern ownership of certain creatures, and also to hide them from the Muggle world. In the Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them film, the political climate of the wizarding community at the time saw a blanket ban on possessing all magical creatures.

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire

During Harry’s fourth year, Hogwarts plays host to a legendary event: the Triwizard Tournament. Three European schools participate in the tournament, with three ‘champions’ representing each school in the deadly tasks. The Goblet of Fire chooses Fleur Delacour, Viktor Krum, and Cedric Diggory to compete against each other. However, curiously, Harry’s name is also produced from the Goblet thus making him a fourth champion, which results in a terrifying encounter with a reborn Lord Voldemort.

When Did The Harry Potter Books Take Place

I always wondered when the setting of the books was supposed to be. Is it set in the past? Present? Future?

I remember seeing somewhere that there was actual years/dates associated with events in the book.

Is there a visual timeline of all the Harry Potter events somewhere with years/months/days mentioned?

All dates in the HP world trace back to the Death Day party of Nearly Headless Nick in The Chamber of Secrets. It was stated that his it was his 500th Death Day. The cake reads:

Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpingtondied 31st October, 1492

So, it stands to reason that during the second year, Harry Potter was 12, and that it was the year 1992. All dates can be calculated from that moment in time.

It should also be noted that this isn’t strictly adhered to, specifically, Dudley has Playstation before they came out, among other things.

Harry Potter Movies In Release Order

LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts Sets Connected! Great Hall, Whomping Willow, Clocktower, Astronomy Tower!

There are no complicated interweaving timelines to deal with if you watch the Potter movies in release date order its two distinct series, with an incomplete set of prequels following on from the parent franchise. That means theres no need to introduce any kind of ‘Machete Order’ yet though if we get some massive revelation in Fantastic Beasts 3, 4 and 5, that may change. Fantastic Beasts 3 starts shooting early in 2020, ahead of a 2021 release.

Its also interesting to note that there are more Harry Potter movies than there are books, with seventh instalment The Deathly Hallows split into two parts because there was so much story to fit in. Were sure the extra box office didnt hurt either

Bodleian Library And Christ Church College

Shh! Hogwarts Library and Infirmary: Oxford Universitys magnificent Bodleian Library, dating back to 1602, starred in three Harry Potter films. The medieval Duke Humfrey’s Library, part of the hallowed institution, was used as the Hogwarts library, whilst the elaborately vaulted Divinity School next door became Hogwarts hospital. Students were admitted for all sorts of scrapes, from falling off broomsticks to touching a cursed opal necklace. At Christ Church College, a 10 minute walk away, you can see where we were first introduced to Hogwarts with Harry and the other first-year wizards ascending the 16th-century stone staircase to the Great Hall.

Number 12 Grimmauld Place

Number 12, Grimmauld Place , London is the address and name of reference to the home of the Black family, an ancient and pure-blooded line of wizards. It first appears in the fifth book. The structure of Number 12 Grimmauld Place is a Georgian terraced house.

Number 12 houses the Black family tree on a wall tapestry, and an enchanted portrait of Walburga Black, Sirius’ mother. An ancient and deeply mad house-elf named Kreacher is loyal to the portrait of Mrs. Black. There are other portraits of members of the Black family, including Phineas Nigellus Black, one-time Head of the Black family and least-popular Headmaster of Hogwarts. The staircase is lined with the heads of beheaded former house-elves, which are mounted onto the walls.

The house fell into disrepair during Sirius’ twelve-year imprisonment in Azkaban. Following his escape, he returned to it in the fifth book to discover that it was now a gloomy and unpleasant ruin teeming with dust, decay, magical creatures, and various dangers. Harry, Ron, Hermione, and various members of the Order gradually restore it to a livable condition over the course of this book. In Half-Blood Prince, Harry learns that he has inherited the property under the terms of Sirius’ will, although he donates it to the Order .

The Claremont Square area of London was used for the exteriors of Number 12, Grimmauld Place.

Lupin joins the staff as Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, while convicted murderer Sirius Black escapes from Azkaban Prison. The Ministry of Magic entrusts the Dementors of Azkaban to guard Hogwarts from Black. Harry learns more about his past and his connection with the escaped prisoner.

Completion Of The Series

Harry Potter Quidditch Set

In December 2005, Rowling stated on her web site, “2006 will be the year when I write the final book in the Harry Potter series.” Updates then followed in her online diary chronicling the progress of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, with the release date of 21 July 2007. The book itself was finished on 11 January 2007 in the Balmoral Hotel, Edinburgh, where she scrawled a message on the back of a bust of Hermes. It read: “J. K. Rowling finished writing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in this room on 11 January 2007.”

Rowling herself has stated that the last chapter of the final book was completed “in something like 1990”. In June 2006, Rowling, on an appearance on the British talk show Richard & Judy, announced that the chapter had been modified as one character “got a reprieve” and two others who previously survived the story had in fact been killed. On 28 March 2007, the cover art for the Bloomsbury Adult and Child versions and the Scholastic version were released.

In September 2012, Rowling mentioned in an interview that she might go back to make a “director’s cut” of two of the existing Harry Potter books.

Where Was Hogwarts Filmed

Alnwick Castle is the location used for Hogwarts Castle in Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. This is where you see Harry having broomstick lessons. The exterior scenes were filmed at Gloucester Cathedral in Gloucestershire, England and where you can look for Moaning Myrtle. Hogwarts Great Hall was actually modelled after the Great Hall at Christ Church in Oxford England.

Fictional Universe Of Harry Potter

The fictional universe of British author J. K. Rowling‘s Harry Potter series of fantasy novels comprises two distinct societies: the Wizarding World and the Muggle world. In the novels, the Muggle world is the world inhabited by the non-magical majority, with which the Wizarding world exists coextensively, albeit mostly remaining hidden from the non-magical humans. The plot of the series is set in 1990s Britain, but in a veiled and separate shadow society wherein magic is commonly used and practised, and those who can use it live in self-enforced seclusion, hiding their abilities from the rest of the world. The term “Wizarding World” refers to the global wizard community that lives hidden in parallel with the Muggle world the different terms refer to different communities within the same area rather than separate planets or worlds. Any new works taking place in this universe are released under the “J. K. Rowling’s Wizarding World” brand.
