Assuming we can trust Tom Riddle’s diary we see that Dumbledore was the Transfiguration teacher during his time there.

“Only the Transfiguration teacher, Dumbledore, seemed to think Hagrid was innocent. He persuaded Dippet to keep Hagrid and train him as gamekeeper. Yes, I think Dumbledore might have guessedDumbledore never seemed to like me as much as the other teachers did…”

For some speculation as, as far as I know, we don’t have any concrete information for why Dumbledore changed teaching roles. He initially started out as Transfiguration teacher during Minerva’s time at Hogwarts, once she joined the team he felt like she could “take over” from him and so moved to be the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. Sometime during the Fantastic Beasts series he can then no longer teach this… maybe he wasn’t reinstated at the end of TCoG. At this point he then goes back to teaching Transfiguration as that is where he came from.

I’ve also seen speculation that Dumbledore could have been a substitute teacher during these flashbacks and the present day in TCoG but seeing as it happens on both cases during the film I would assume he actually was the DADA teacher.

It’s worth noting that Jude Law has confirmed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that he does not teach Transfiguration during the film and so the theory of him being a substitute teacher seems unlikely.

Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone

In the opening chapter of the first novel of the series, Dumbledore arrives at number four, Privet Drive in Little Whinging, Surrey. When the evil wizard Lord Voldemort kills Harry’s parents before being reduced to a lesser form, Dumbledore decides to place the now-orphaned Harry in the home of Vernon and Petunia Dursley. He knows that Harry will be protected by the special magic caused by his mother’s sacrifice. Below are some more details on the etymology behind the characters name.

1) According to Dictionary.com, Dumbledore translates to Bumblebee. In an interview, JK Rowling said that she picked the name because one of Dumbledores passions was music and she always imagined him humming to himself.

2) Albus comes from the Latin word white, which is a nice reference to the characters beard.

3) According to Pottermore, one of Dumbledores middle names, Percival, was inspired by the legendary Knight of the same name. Percival was one of King Arthurs Knights of the Round Table. Percival is also the name of Albus dad in the books.

Seems like every time a new trailer comes out for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, there is a large amount of debate regarding a perceived discrepancy with the canon. And we havent even gotten to the fact that everyone is dressed as a Muggle yet! But the latest hubbub was about Dumbledore teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts when he was the Transfiguration professor as far as we knew. So much as I did when we first embarked upon a new wizarding world franchise, I will do my best to set the record straight.

Let us talk about dates. This always gets confusing, because Jo isnt really great at math sometimes, but I will attempt to paint a coherent picture with strictly the text we have.

First, the time when the scene in question takes place: the first half of the 1910s. We know Newt was born in 1897 , which meant he would have started at Hogwarts in 1908/1909 and was intended to graduate in 1916/1917. So thats the time period well be pursuing through the text.

What do we know about what Dumbledore taught?

What do we know about who taught DADA?

So who taught what?

Given Items 5 and 10 above, which I hope youll agree have a firm foundation in fact, we have the following information to work with:

Both Galatea Merrythought and Albus Dumbledore were teaching at Hogwarts, regularly, from at least the 1910s through 1945.

During Tom Riddles time at school, Merrythought taught DADA and Dumbledore taught Transfiguration.

During Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald

Dumbledore is of course teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts, however, it is unclear if he is still the DADA teacher at the end of the film, though I would say it is implied he is.

What Happens To Grindelwald And Dumbledore

As noted last time around, we do already sort of know where this is all heading: in 1945, Dumbledore and Grindelwald reunite, with the two powerful wizards facing off in what Rowling describes in the Harry Potter books as the greatest wizarding duel of all time. But Crimes adds a few new wrinkles to that eventual fight.

Specifically, theres more context about why it takes Dumbledore so long to rouse himself to fight his former friend / lover . Apparently, the two wizards once swore a blood pact against battling against each other, taking the form of a pendant that contains droplets of both their blood. Until that pact is broken Dumbledore suggests at the end of Crimes that its possible, since he ends up with the pendant in handthe wizarding worlds most powerful ally has his hands tied when it comes to confronting the threat.

Crimes adds a few new wrinkles to that eventual fight

We also get more information as to how Grindelwald is getting the Wizarding World on board with his agenda visions of the horrors of the future World War II, something that rings as tone-deaf, given that Grindelwalds movement is expressly designed as an emulation of the Nazi regime.

Dumbledore Seems To Have Lied To Harry About What He Saw In The Mirror Of Erised

When Harry views his innermost desires reflected in the Mirror of Erised as a first-year at Hogwarts, he sees himself surrounded by family members most notably his mother and his father, who died when he was a baby.

In the scene, he asks Dumbledore what he sees when he looks in it, and the headmaster says he sees himself holding a new pair of thick, woolen socks.

But per The Leaky Cauldron, during a web chat with Bloomsbury in 2007, Rowling told fans that Dumbledore’s deepest desire was actually the same as Harry’s.

“He saw his family alive, whole and happy Ariana, Percival and Kendra all returned to him, and Aberforth reconciled to him,” she wrote.

The highly debated topic shifted again when “The Crimes of Grindelwald” came out because, in the scene where young Dumbledore looks into the mirror, it shows that his greatest desire is to be reunited with Grindelwald.

Crimes biggest twist is saved for its final moments, when Grindelwald reveals Credences supposed true identity. He apparently isnt a random orphan: hes Aurelius Dumbledore, the lost scion of the Dumbledore family and alleged brother to Albus and his siblings, Aberforth and Ariana. That reveal has staggering implications for the Potter world, given that it seems almost impossible that Dumbledore had a secret, lost younger brother, considering the timing.

To briefly recap the history of the Dumbledore family, as detailed in various interludes in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: previously established history reveals that Dumbledores father, Percival Dumbledore, was sent to Azkaban sometime around 1890, after attacking three Muggles who traumatized and attacked his six-year-old daughter Ariana. Percival is then said to have lived out the rest of his life in prison, although its unclear how long that was.
