Tom Riddle’s Time At Hogwarts
Assuming we can trust Tom Riddle’s diary we see that Dumbledore was the Transfiguration teacher during his time there.
“Only the Transfiguration teacher, Dumbledore, seemed to think Hagrid was innocent. He persuaded Dippet to keep Hagrid and train him as gamekeeper. Yes, I think Dumbledore might have guessedDumbledore never seemed to like me as much as the other teachers did…”
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Chapter 17, “The Heir of Slytherin”
For some speculation as, as far as I know, we don’t have any concrete information for why Dumbledore changed teaching roles. He initially started out as Transfiguration teacher during Minerva’s time at Hogwarts, once she joined the team he felt like she could “take over” from him and so moved to be the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. Sometime during the Fantastic Beasts series he can then no longer teach this… maybe he wasn’t reinstated at the end of TCoG. At this point he then goes back to teaching Transfiguration as that is where he came from.
I’ve also seen speculation that Dumbledore could have been a substitute teacher during these flashbacks and the present day in TCoG but seeing as it happens on both cases during the film I would assume he actually was the DADA teacher.
It’s worth noting that Jude Law has confirmed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that he does not teach Transfiguration during the film and so the theory of him being a substitute teacher seems unlikely.
Harry Potter: 10 Hogwarts Professors And What Muggle Subject They’d Teach
Magic may be important, but even wizards need to learn a few muggle basics, and here are 10 Hogwarts teachers who could head non-magical classes.
If you are a Harry Potter fan, you probably know how much Harry and Ron hated doing their homework and how much Hermione loved it. If we Muggles went to Hogwarts, none of us would ever complain because magic would be all it took to make up for nasty essay assignments. Yet, what if they came to our world?
Many professors on this list are actually considered some of the most powerful wizards and witches in history. Nevertheless, it’s fun to imagine them being absolutely normal Muggles struggling with keeping the class quiet. Here are 10 Hogwarts professors who could probably keep teaching in the muggle world.
Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone

He reasons that they are the only family he has left with Petunia Evans Dursley being Harry’s aunt, who accepting her nephew into their home. Dumbledore in the Great Hall
When readers picture Albus Dumbledore, they might imagine a man with bright blue eyes, half-moon glasses perched on a long crooked nose, a tall and thin build, flowing robes, a long silver beard tucked neatly into his belt, and a face lined with age and wisdom. Within the magical world of Harry Potter, Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore is known for the greatness of his power and the depth of his wisdom. Throughout J.K. Rowlings seven novels, Dumbledore guides Harry, thwarts evil, and is a hero to many.
After revelations about Dumbledores past that emerged in The Deathly Hallows, debates continue to rage over Dumbledores motivations, but this is a discussion for another article. Dumbledore polarizes fans, yet no matter ones personal feelings about this character, it is impossible not to admire the wisdom, wittiness, and insight that flow from his mouth. Through my multiple readings of Rowlings novels, I have discovered ten quotes that have encouraged me in tough times, changed my outlook on life, and nourished my soul.
After all, to the well-organized mind, death is but the next great adventure.

Why Did Dumbledore Turn Down Tom Riddle’s Request To Teach Defence Against The Dark Arts
Tom Riddle had approached Armando Dippet, the previous headmaster, about becoming the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor but was turned away. He returned to Hogwarts with the same request soon after Albus Dumbledore became headmaster but was turned away again. Out of anger, he cursed the position so that no teacher would last longer than one year. Throughout the Harry Potter series, we watched a new teacher come and go every year as a result of this curse. Why did Dumbledore say no to him?

Albus Dumbledore And The Career Change
May 31, 2021
Seems like every time a new trailer comes out for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, there is a large amount of debate regarding a perceived discrepancy with the canon. And we havent even gotten to the fact that everyone is dressed as a Muggle yet! But the latest hubbub was about Dumbledore teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts when he was the Transfiguration professor as far as we knew. So much as I did when we first embarked upon a new wizarding world franchise, I will do my best to set the record straight.
Let us talk about dates. This always gets confusing, because Jo isnt really great at math sometimes, but I will attempt to paint a coherent picture with strictly the text we have.
First, the time when the scene in question takes place: the first half of the 1910s. We know Newt was born in 1897 , which meant he would have started at Hogwarts in 1908/1909 and was intended to graduate in 1916/1917. So thats the time period well be pursuing through the text.
What do we know about what Dumbledore taught?
What do we know about who taught DADA?
So who taught what?
Given Items 5 and 10 above, which I hope youll agree have a firm foundation in fact, we have the following information to work with:
Both Galatea Merrythought and Albus Dumbledore were teaching at Hogwarts, regularly, from at least the 1910s through 1945.
During Tom Riddles time at school, Merrythought taught DADA and Dumbledore taught Transfiguration.
During Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald
Dumbledore is of course teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts, however, it is unclear if he is still the DADA teacher at the end of the film, though I would say it is implied he is.

- Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley regarding Sirius
Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger were Harry Potter‘s best friends and, like Harry, they thought Dumbledore was a great wizard. Dumbledore liked them too, despite that he wasn’t as close to them as he was to Harry.
After his death, he left Ron his Deluminator and Hermione his copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard. These gifts were proven very useful, as Ron abandoned Harry and Hermione formerly to find his family, and, when he wanted to come back to Harry and Hermione, the Deluminator showed him the way. The trio also read the Tales of Beedle the Bard and learned about the Deathly Hallows. Harry, Ron and Hermione also visited Dumbledore’s portrait, after the Battle of Hogwarts.
Newt And Leta’s Time At Hogwarts
Newt and Leta would both have been 13 during 1910 . Dumbeldore’s occupation at this time is unknown though McGonagall was already on the teaching staff.

What Happens To Grindelwald And Dumbledore
As noted last time around, we do already sort of know where this is all heading: in 1945, Dumbledore and Grindelwald reunite, with the two powerful wizards facing off in what Rowling describes in the Harry Potter books as the greatest wizarding duel of all time. But Crimes adds a few new wrinkles to that eventual fight.
Specifically, theres more context about why it takes Dumbledore so long to rouse himself to fight his former friend / lover . Apparently, the two wizards once swore a blood pact against battling against each other, taking the form of a pendant that contains droplets of both their blood. Until that pact is broken Dumbledore suggests at the end of Crimes that its possible, since he ends up with the pendant in handthe wizarding worlds most powerful ally has his hands tied when it comes to confronting the threat.
Crimes adds a few new wrinkles to that eventual fight
We also get more information as to how Grindelwald is getting the Wizarding World on board with his agenda visions of the horrors of the future World War II, something that rings as tone-deaf, given that Grindelwalds movement is expressly designed as an emulation of the Nazi regime.
Dumbledore Seems To Have Lied To Harry About What He Saw In The Mirror Of Erised
When Harry views his innermost desires reflected in the Mirror of Erised as a first-year at Hogwarts, he sees himself surrounded by family members most notably his mother and his father, who died when he was a baby.
In the scene, he asks Dumbledore what he sees when he looks in it, and the headmaster says he sees himself holding a new pair of thick, woolen socks.
But per The Leaky Cauldron, during a web chat with Bloomsbury in 2007, Rowling told fans that Dumbledore’s deepest desire was actually the same as Harry’s.
“He saw his family alive, whole and happy Ariana, Percival and Kendra all returned to him, and Aberforth reconciled to him,” she wrote.
The highly debated topic shifted again when “The Crimes of Grindelwald” came out because, in the scene where young Dumbledore looks into the mirror, it shows that his greatest desire is to be reunited with Grindelwald.

How Long Did Quirrell Teach At Hogwarts
So we know that the D.A.D.A teaching post is cursed, and Dumbledore says that they are unable to keep the post filled for longer than a year ever since her refused the job to Voldemort. But I always had the impression that Quirrell was a teacher at Hogwarts before Harry’s first year Professor Quirinus Quirrell is the Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts during Harry Potter’s first year. He is the main antagonist in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, although this is revealed only in the final chapter. The title of Sorcerer’s Stone’s last chapter, The Man with Two Faces, refers to him. 1 Introduction 2 New from J.K. Rowling 2.1 Discovered in Chapter 8, The. Tom Riddle learns about the Chamber of Secrets and decides to find and open it He is in his first year at Hogwarts when he learns about the existence of the Chamber. He is determined to find it but doesn’t succeed until five years later, in June of 1943 Rowling stated in a live web chat on 30 July 2007 that Quirrell had worked at Hogwarts as Muggle Studies teacher for a certain length of time, before taking the cursed Defence Against the Dark Arts position in the same year that Harry joined
He Was In Love With Grindelwald
Dumbledore raised his siblings in Godrics Hollow , where he would eventually meet a young, brilliant wizard named Gellert Grindelwald. Dumbledore and Grindelwald shared much in common and the two of them eventually became close friends, bonding over their intellect and shared enthusiasm of the Deathly Hallows.
Friendship turned to romance, and while Dumbledore loved Grindelwald, it was only recently that Rowling confirmed the two of them shared an intense sexual relationship. However, Grindelwald was not a good influence, and he began to turn Dumbledore to an anti-Muggle point of view. In fact, Dumbledore began to agree with Grindelwalds idea of wizard domination and helped him plan the early stages of his revolution. Dumbledore ignored Grindelwalds obvious darkness and he would soon pay for it dearly.

Is Credence Really Who Grindelwald Claims He Is
Crimes biggest twist is saved for its final moments, when Grindelwald reveals Credences supposed true identity. He apparently isnt a random orphan: hes Aurelius Dumbledore, the lost scion of the Dumbledore family and alleged brother to Albus and his siblings, Aberforth and Ariana. That reveal has staggering implications for the Potter world, given that it seems almost impossible that Dumbledore had a secret, lost younger brother, considering the timing.
To briefly recap the history of the Dumbledore family, as detailed in various interludes in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: previously established history reveals that Dumbledores father, Percival Dumbledore, was sent to Azkaban sometime around 1890, after attacking three Muggles who traumatized and attacked his six-year-old daughter Ariana. Percival is then said to have lived out the rest of his life in prison, although its unclear how long that was.
That reveal has staggeringimplications for the Potter world if its true
Dumbledores mother, Kendra Dumbledore, took care of Ariana on her own as best she could, even though Ariana was unable to control her magic after her assault. When Ariana was 14, a magical accident or Obscurus outburst caused an explosion that killed Kendra, leaving Albus stuck at home as her caretaker at roughly age 17. That was when Albus met Grindelwald.
