Harsh Reality: Not Every Slytherin Is Deserving Of Their Post
Earning a position of power isnt everything and some Slytherin graduates dont particularly honor the houses name. The best example is Dolores Umbridge. Harrys Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher in his fifth year, Dolores is easily the most hated character in the series, surpassing even Voldemort. Her thirst for power is so great she attaches herself to anyone who may provide her with an advantage.

Even her former Head of House, Horace Slughorn, greatly dislikes her. Her abuses of power give Slytherin a worse name and attitude after she creates the Inquisitorial Squad, recruiting students like Draco Malfoy.
Harry Potter’s Relationship With Severus Snape May Have Changed
Harry Potter would always be terrified of Severus Snape: he is a formidable character and his own Slytherin students fear him. But as one of his own students, Harry may have had a far closer relationship with Snape, not least because being Sorted into Slytherin would challenge the Professor’s belief that Harry is “just like his father.” In light of his more favorable treatment, Harry may have excelled in Potions long before he came into possession of Snape’s textbook because he would have had training from the man himself.
Would he have learned of the truth of his mission prior to Professor Snape’s death? Probably not, because Dumbledore’s agenda with Harry was always to keep him in the dark as much as possible, but the two would probably have enjoyed a less frosty relationship. That might also have impacted how much time and effort Harry spent assuming that Snape was the root of all evil and ignoring other helpful hints.
It’s still unlikely that Harry’s relationship with Lord Voldemort would have changed, however, because the Dark Lord was driven too much by his fear of the prophecy. While he attempted to recruit Lily and James Potter, their son still needed to be destroyed for Voldemort to thrive.

What If Lord Voldemort Chose Neville Longbottom
Harry Potter only became the Chosen One because Lord Voldemort himself picked the boy as the one he thought would become his greatest enemy. The prophecy created by Sybill Trelawney could also have referred to Neville Longbottom who, like Harry, was born in the month of July and whose parents had twice thwarted the Dark Lord.
Yet even if Voldemort had earmarked Neville as the greater threat, the future Hogwarts Herbology teacher would most likely have remained safe. His parents, Frank and Alice Longbottom, wouldn’t have chosen a menace like Peter Pettigrew as their Secret Keeper, hence it being likely that Neville would have been hidden away successfully and the Fidelius Charm would have remained intact.

His Relationship With The Entire Weasley Family Would Be Almost Nonexistent
Because of his potentially unstable friendship with Ron, Harry might not have had as many opportunities to visit the Weasley family or get close to them. One day, Draco decides to erase Hermiones memories. During the Battle of Hogwarts, Hermione and Draco reunite on the room of requirement. Thats a symbolic place for them cause thats where they exchanged their first kiss, thats why Hermione recovers her memories but its too late since shes already with Ron.
He’d Realize Not All Slytherins Are Evil
Going through this existential crisis might make Harry consider why he was sorted into Slytherin after all and why not all of his Slytherin friends are complete jerks like he imagined they would be. Getting to know some Slytherin students better and truly becoming good friends with them wouldn’t only change Harry’s perspective of his house, but it would help him see useful characteristics within himself and his new friends that would help him through his journey.

Slytherins have a reputation for their ambition being rooted in seeking as much power and influence as possible. You can understand why, when former students included witches and wizards like Lucius Malfoy, Dolores Umbridge and the one who was after control of the entire wizarding world Lord Voldemort. Nevertheless, there are those whose ambition manifests itself in a different way. Scorpius Malfoy was one such Slytherin. His ambitions were smaller and lot of his were rooted in doing the best he could academically and expanding his magical knowledge. Who can forget just how thrilled he was to come across Hermione Grangers very impressive book collection? He demonstrated that not all Slytherins are driven by the same thing and proved that just because his goals appeared to be smaller, it didnt make them any less worthy or important.

What If Hermione Granger Didn’t Exist
Harry Potter is the focal point of the entire franchise, with the Boy Who Lived often joined in his adventures by close friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. Yet while Harry and Ron are capable wizards, Hermione is a class above with her intelligence and logic often setting the trio in good stead.
Without Hermione, Harry and Ron would most likely have perished in the Sorcerer’s Stone. Likewise in the Chamber of Secrets. What If Remus Lupin Hadn’t Transformed
Don’t get us wrong we absolutely love Remus Lupin but we can’t quite forgive him for transforming into a werewolf at the most crucial time during the Prisoner of Azkaban book and movie. Just as it looks like Sirius Black will be a free man, and Peter Pettigrew will be subjected to a spell in Azkaban himself, Lupin’s sudden change allows the latter to escape and reunite with Voldemort once again.
Had that not happened, Harry would likely have moved out of Number 4 Private Drive and instead lived with Sirius. But because Pettigrew escaped, the Boy Who Lived’s godfather was unable to clear his name and would ultimately spend the rest of his days with a price on his head.
What If Lord Voldemort Won
The biggest what-if of them all. What if Lord Voldemort had defeated Harry Potter at the Battle of Hogwarts? What if he’d been able to kill the Boy Who Lived rather than the other way round?
Well, put simply, there most likely wouldn’t have been any muggles left. Voldemort wanted to take over their world which probably would have involved mass murder. Similarly, anybody loyal to Harry would have probably been killed and it seems feasible that Hogwarts would have been turned into an institution where the dark arts are taught. Certainly, the world would have been a grim place had Harry not reigned supreme.

What If Harry Had Been Sorted Into Slytherin
Prior to setting foot in Hogwarts, Harrys perception of Slytherin was tainted by his interactions with Hagrid, Draco, and Ron. These interactions made Harry predisposed to dislike Slytherin. However, consider an alternative timeline where Harry had been Sorted into Slytherin. How drastically would this have changed the series?
Its important to note that Harry is an innately empathetic person. We first learn this at the zoo in Sorcerers Stone. Harry concludes that being stuck in a glass tank was worse than having a cupboard as a bedroom . In Chamber of Secrets, Harry tells Dobby that his plight as a house-elf makes the Dursleys sound almost human . In Deathly Hallows, Griphook notes that Harrys empathy toward others makes him an unusual wizard . This character trait would have changed readers attitudes toward Slytherin by presenting them with a likable character from that House. The juxtaposition between Harrys personality and the stereotypes the students from the other Houses held about Slytherin would have enriched the series.

What If The Potters Had Stuck With Sirius Black
James and Lily Potter are both murdered by Lord Voldemort after their Secret Keeper, old friend Peter Pettigrew, betrayed them by revealing their whereabouts to the villain. Pettigrew wasn’t initially meant to hold the mantle, however, with Sirius Black previously the only person who knew where they were hiding.
It seems feasible that, had the Potters stuck with Black rather than change things at the last minute, they would have survived but this may not have been for the best. Without them dying, Harry Potter may never have had the guts to take on the Dark Lord. And without Potter as the Chosen One, the wizarding community may have suffered as a result.

Harry Takes Unnecessary Risks
Gryffindors are known for constantly wanting to prove themselves in front of their peers.
From trying to hunt Sirius Black by himself, entering the Chambers of Secrets to save Ginny, using the flying car with Ron to arrive at Hogwarts and many other crazy feats, he didnt hesitate twice in risking his life if he thought it was necessary.
The fact that he played Quidditch is another sign of his risky behaviour flying on a broom isnt exactly a safe activity!
While Slytherins are not known for their cautious attitudes, they tend to think twice about getting involved in a complex scenario. Thats why so many Slytherin students chose not to fight at the Battle of Hogwarts and instead some returned with Professor Slughorn with reinforcements.
