In 2000, after a seven-month search, lead actor Daniel Radcliffe was discovered by producer David Heyman and writer Steve Kloves seated just behind them in a theatre. In Heyman’s own words, “There sitting behind me was this boy with these big blue eyes. It was Dan Radcliffe. I remember my first impressions: He was curious and funny and so energetic. There was real generosity too, and sweetness. But at the same time he was really voracious and with hunger for knowledge of whatever kind.”

Radcliffe had already established himself as an actor in the 1999 BBC television production of David Copperfield in which he played the title role’s childhood years. Heyman persuaded Radcliffe’s parents to allow him to audition for the part of Harry Potter, which involved Radcliffe being filmed. Rowling was enthusiastic after viewing Radcliffe’s filmed test, saying she didn’t think there was a better choice for the part of Harry Potter.

Also in 2000, the then unknown British actors Emma Watson and Rupert Grint were selected from thousands of auditioning children to play the roles of Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, respectively. Their only previous acting experience was in school plays. Grint was eleven years old and Watson ten at the time they were cast.

Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban

For Harry Potter, its the start of another far-from-ordinary year at Hogwarts when the Knight Bus crashes through the darkness and comes to an abrupt halt in front of him.

It turns out that Sirius Black, mass-murderer and follower of Lord Voldemort, has escaped and they say he is coming after Harry.

In his first Divination class, Professor Trelawney sees an omen of death in Harrys tea leaves.

And perhaps most frightening of all are the Dementors patrolling the school grounds with their soul-sucking kiss in search of fresh victims.

So What’s The Recommended Reading Order

Fortunately, Harry Potter isn’t one of those series like Star Wars has a sprawling number of canon novels, film novelizations, reference books, and comics to read. Instead, it’s a finite universe which makes catching up on it much easier. We recommend reading the main series chronologically so that you can see Harry and his friends grow up. Then if you’re still thirsting for more of the Wizarding World you can see where your interests most strongly lie , and start again there.

If you still havent read Harry Potter, just know that its never too late to start and even for those who have, youre never too old to go back and relive the magic.

Harry Potter And The Sorcerers Stone

In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, the book that started it all , Harry Potter discovers his true identity in the wee hours of his eleventh birthday: he is a wizard, famous in the magical world for having vanquished the evil Lord Voldemort when he was only a baby. This revelation, delivered by a gruff, hairy giant named Hagrid, sets Harry on a fantastical journey of a lifetime.

He meets bosom buddies Ron and Hermione aboard the Hogwarts Express, and is soon sorted with them into Gryffindor: the house of the intrepid and brave. However, Harry also makes plenty of enemies at Hogwarts, most notably the arrogant Draco Malfoy and the nasty potions master, Snape . And from battling a troll on Halloween to his first exhilarating Quidditch match not to mention the novels climax, in which Harry goes up against Voldemort for the second time in his young life theres never a dull moment in the first year of his new adventure.

Sorcerers Stone also perfectly balances exciting action with touching emotion, as Harry finds a true family in Ron and Hermione after years of misery with the Dursleys. Indeed, the books small, moving moments such as Harry being floored by a gift from Rons mother, or Hermiones tearful declaration at the end about books and cleverness are just as magical as the spells themselves.

    Differences From The Book

The Story of Harry Potter (All Years) in 3 Minutes! | ArcadeCloud

At 766 pages in the British edition and 870 in the American edition, Order of the Phoenix is the longest book in the Harry Potter series, however the film is the second shortest. Screenwriter Michael Goldenberg described his task to cut down the novel as searching for “the best equivalent way to tell the story. My job was to stay true to the spirit of the book, rather than to the letter”. Goldenberg said that Rowling told him, the producers, and Yates that “she just wanted to see a great movie, and gave permission to take whatever liberties felt needed to take to translate the book into a movie she would love”. Cutting down the book to meet the time frame of the film, Goldenberg explained, became “clearer when figured out that the organising principle of the screenplay was to narrate Harry’s emotional journey”. He and Yates “looked for every opportunity to get everything could in there. And where couldn’t, to sort of pay homage to it, to have it somewhere in the background or to feel like it could be taking place off-screen”.

Rita Skeeter, the journalist played by Miranda Richardson in Goblet of Fire, was also removed. In the book, Hermione blackmails her into writing an article that supports Harry as the rest of the Wizarding world denies his claims. Richardson noted that “it’s never gonna be the book on film, exactly. … They’ll take certain aspects from the book and make it something that they hope is going to be commercial and that people want to see”.

Response Within The Harry Potter Fandom

The response to the play from the Harry Potterfandom was polarizing.Fans responded positively to the play and its characters, with Scorpius Malfoy being particularly popular. Some fans commented that the dialogue between the familiar characters was “spot on”, celebrating it as a faithful continuation of the books. Others have noted that the play sheds light on some of the relationships between the characters, such as Harry and Dumbledore’s. The response had been particularly positive among fans who watched the play on stage.

Some fans, however, said the story seemed more “like a work of fan fiction” and said that it diverged from previously established rules of the universe, criticising the script’s characterisation. Some also took issue with the style and plot of the script, complaining that the Time-Turner storylines had already been used, as had Cedric Diggory’s death, and that the writers were rehashing old storylines and over-played tropes of the fantasy/sci-fi genre.

Harry Potter Cafe Left In Limbo After Fire Damage

BBC Scotland, Edinburgh and East reporter

A cafe where JK Rowling wrote parts of her Harry Potter books cannot reopen because the building’s owner has gone into liquidation, the BBC understands.

The Elephant House cafe was one of several properties badly damaged in a blaze on George IV Bridge in Edinburgh in August last year.

Cafe owner David Taylor said no work had been carried out to repair the building and he was left in limbo.

Liquidator Mike Solomons said it was “addressing issues” around the fire.

Mr Taylor, who has 12 years remaining on his lease at the property, said his insurance company had signed off £350,000 to renovate the cafe after the fire.

But he cannot proceed with the work until the structure of the central Edinburgh block has been made safe.

The five-storey building damaged by the fire houses a number of other businesses such as the Oz Bar, Merchants restaurant and rental flats. They all remain shut.

The part of the property which housed the Elephant House cafe and the Patisserie Valerie next door was owned by the family-run Tonstate Group, which went into liquidation shortly after the fire last year.

Mr Solomons, the liquidator, told BBC Scotland his company would try to help the building owners and tenants “as soon as possible”.

But it has left the business owners worried about when they will be able to reopen.

Mr Taylor told BBC Scotland the situation had “become a nightmare”.

Publication And Reception In The United Kingdom

Bloomsbury accepted the book, paying Rowling a £2,500 advance and Cunningham sent proof copies to carefully chosen authors, critics and booksellers in order to obtain comments that could be quoted when the book was launched. He was less concerned about the book’s length than about its author’s name, since the title sounded like a boys’ book to him and he believed boys preferred books by male authors. Rowling therefore adopted the pen nameJ.K. Rowling just before publication.

In June 1997, Bloomsbury published Philosopher’s Stone with an initial print run of 500 copies in hardback, three hundred of which were distributed to libraries. Her original name, “Joanne Rowling”, can be found on the copyright page of all British editions until September 1999. The short initial print run was standard for first novels and Cunningham hoped booksellers would read the book and recommend it to customers. Examples from this initial print run have sold for as much as US$471,000 in a 2021 Heritage auction.Thomas Taylor created the cover for the first edition.

9+34, from which the Hogwarts Express left London, was commemorated in the real-life King’s Cross railway station with a sign and a trolley apparently passing through the wall.

The eight Harry Potter movies are leaving HBO Max in the latest installment of the streamer’s tennis match with Peacock over the rights to stream the films. As of Aug. 31, fans of the franchise will need to visit rival service Peacock, which got the films at the start of July, to stream them.

HBO Max subscribers won’t be completely bereft of Potter-related content. All three movies in the Fantastic Beasts saga will still stream there. HBO Max is also the streaming home of the 20th anniversary Harry Potter special.

WarnerMedia’s Warner Bros. signed a licensing deal with NBC Universal years ago, though WarnerMedia’s HBO Max has pulled back the rights several times over the last few years, as each platform seeks the boost a popular franchise can give.

Until any future license swap, you’ll need two platforms to stream the movies in order of CNET’s definitive rankings.
