Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts | Official Trailer | HBO Max

The boy wizard H.P. returns once again to his home on HBO Max.

Streaming services and licenses are weird, and that means that the Harry Potter series, despite being Warner Bros. productions, sometimes leave HBO Max, a Warner Bros. Discovery service. But now, Harry Potter and all his magical friends are returning to the service, and a whole load of Star Trek is coming with them for the ride, Variety reports.

The Wizarding World films had been over at NBC Universal’s Peacock service, with which HBO Max has been trading joint custody for a few years, Variety notes. The movies left Peacock on August 31, and will fly into HBO Max Wingardium Leviosa-style on November 1.

Alongside Harry Potter, we’ll also be getting lots of James T. Kirk and Jean Luc Picard, as 10 Star Trek movies will join the service. They left Paramount+, Star Trek’s streaming home, on October 1. The movies include Star Trek: The Motion Picture Director’s Edition, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Star Trek VI: Undiscovered Country Director’s Cut, Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Insurrection, and Star Trek” Nemesis.

Hbo Max Is Losing The Harry Potter Movies To A Major Streaming Rival

The boy who lived, will live somewhere else

HBO Max will lose all eight of the Harry Potter movies at the end of August.

From August 31, the original octet will leave the streaming service, marking the second time in three years that the adventures of the boy wizard have left the platform.

For those in the US, the only place to stream the movies for the foreseeable future will be on Peacock, which began streaming all eight films at the start of July. The Fantastic Beasts movies, however, will remain on HBO Max, as will the cast reunion that aired at the start of 2022.

When HBO Max first launched in May 2020, it boasted the full Harry Potter collection, but only for a few months, with Peacock snaring exclusive rights later that year. HBO Max secured the movies once again in September 2021, but only for a year, and now they’re flying back to Peacock.

While the Harry Potter series and its larger universe were made by Warner Bros. the parent company of HBO Max the origins of this deal date back to 2016, when NBCUniversal struck an exclusive agreement with Warner Bros. Domestic TV Distribution for US broadcast and cable rights to the whole Wizarding World franchise, which runs until 2025. The deal was reported to be worth a colossal $250 million.

Harry Potter Is Leaving Hbo Max Here’s Where You Can Watch

The Harry Potter franchise has activated a portkey and is set to leave one of its current streaming services.

The eight films are currently streaming on HBO Max, but that is set to change thanks to a previous contract agreement made before Warner Bros launched its streaming service.

This isn’t the first time the Harry Potter movies have left a streaming service. In fact, they have moved every few months since HBO Max’s launch in 2020. That’s in contrast to other films in the so-called “Wizarding World” franchise, which stays in one place while its older sister keeps moving around.

Why Do The Harry Potter Films Keep Moving

Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts | Where The Magic Began | HBO Max

The main reason seems to be because of deals made before either HBO Max or Universal had streaming services.

In 2016, the TV rights for the films were set to expire after being held by ABC for many years. At that time, the rights were divided, with NBCUniversal getting cable rights to show the films on SyFy and USA, while HBO bought the streaming rights to have the films on its HBO Go / HBO Now platforms.

Crucially, though, the NBC deal also allowed the films to appear on the SyFy and USA digital platforms. This essentially means that each service has a claim to the digital rights to the films, explaining why they keep moving around.

This is something that looks likely to continue. The NBC deal doesn’t expire until 2025, meaning that things are not likely to change for a few years.

Harry Potter Movies Coming Back To Hbo Max In November

All eight movies will return to the service after being removed this past summer.

Harry Potter will head back home to HBO Max. All eight movies will return to the service on Nov. 1, according to Variety Monday. The movies left HBO Max for NBCUniversal’s Peacock in August.

Ten Star Trek movies will also be joining the service in November from Paramount Plus.

In 2016, Warner Bros. sold the commercial television rights to all eight Harry Potter movies to NBCUniversal in a massive seven-year deal. Then in April of this year, Warner Bros. merged with Discovery, and it has since moved to cut underperforming titles from its HBO Max streaming service.

HBO Max appears to be doubling down on the high-profile content it owns. The Warner Bros.-Discovery merger means that the company took the Harry Potter movies back from NBC Universal, at least temporarily.

Jockeying for content has become commonplace in recent years. As streaming services have increased in popularity, companies have pushed to reacquire content they licensed in order to bolster their own services. Disney let its streaming deal with Netflix expire in order to place its high-profile content on Disney Plus. Similarly, NBCUniversal won its own rights to The Office back from Netflix, so as to increase the appeal of Peacock.

As we here at Collider discovered on Wednesday morning, all eight Harry Potter movies are among those very bingeable offerings. This revelation also flies in the face of a report we posted less than 24 hours ago, which utilizes quotes from HBO Max Content Chief Kevin Reilly who told Business Insider in a recent interview that none of the Harry Potter movies would be available to stream on HBO Max any time soon. Reilly stated HBO Max was still trying to get the rights back to the Harry Potter franchise hopefully by 2025, the date NBCUniversal’s ownership to the franchise’s streaming rights would expire. The HBO Max exec then went on to say,

“Ill just say there is active engagement around that discussion. In terms of the marketplace, theres a lot of opportunities for horse trading. The marketplace is shifting, with the impact of COVID and different companies launching different services, and it creates a lot of opportunities for horse trading. Were seeing that across the board.”
