Divinity School At The Bodleian Library Aka Hogwarts Infirmary

If you, like me, watched the infirmary scene of Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone thinking what the heck kind of gorgeous hospital is this?! then youre in luck its a room you can actually visit in real life!
This gorgeous Gothic vaulted room is actually the Divinity School at the Bodleian Library. It appears in a few films because well, unsurprisingly, people at Hogwarts get hurt a lot. In Chamber of Secrets for instance, this is where Harry goes after Gilderoy Lockheart royally screws up his bone structure and he has to literally REGROW bones thanks to his incompetence. Hermione is also seen recuperating here later thanks to her Cat-astrophic encounter with Polyjuice Potion.
The Divinity School also made a reappearance as the room in Goblet of Fire where McGonagall is teaching everyone how to dance prior to the Yule Ball and Ron gets awkwardly chosen as tribute. So. awkward.

What Harry Potter Scene Was Filmed In These Irish Locations
For those of you who havent guessed already, the scene that was filmed at the Cliffs of Moher and Lemon Rock was featured in the sixth movie in the Harry Potter franchise, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. It is the epic scene in which Harry and Dumbledore venture to a cave in order to destroy a horcrux goosebumps material! During this scene, both Harry and Dumbledore are standing on a rock that looks to be moving towards a cave in the face of mighty cliffs. Well, youve guessed it this rock is Lemon Rock in County Kerry and the towering cliffs are the incredible Cliffs of Moher in County Clare!
As Dumbledore said This is the place. Oh, yes. This place has known magic., and magic it most definitely is bringing two parts of Ireland together in one incredible scene. For true Harry Potter fans, visiting the Cliffs of Moher and Lemon Rock, the two Harry Potter filming locations in Ireland, is a rite of passage on your trip to the Emerald Isle.

Quidditch Matches And More: Glencoe Argyll Scotland
The natural drama of the Scottish Highlands provided the perfect backdrop for the first two Harry Potter movies. The Quidditch matches inter-house broomstick ball games – were filmed in front of Glen Nevis. You’ll recognise the spectacular Steall Falls there from the Tri-Wizard Tournament in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Once voted Scotlands most romantic glen, its also a beautiful scenic place with plenty of holiday lodges and cottages. Or if youre into hill walking, its a great entry point to the Highlands.

Durham Cathedral Aka Hogwarts

The Harry Potter films were filmed all over the UK and many locations you can visit on our tours. Some of the fictional locations like Diagon Alley were sets filmed at Leavesden Film Studios, but many of the external shots can be found in locations around Oxford, London and Scotland.

Glenfinnan Viaduct Aka The Viaduct That The Hogwarts Express Takes
Who as a kid DIDNT dream of one day riding the Hogwarts Express?
Well, if you want to make that childhood dream come true, you can hop on The Jacobite Steam train, which follows the same route as the Hogwarts Express, with a notable crossing over the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct, which is featured heavily in the films.
Fun fact: during the Half Blood Prince, 100 students from Fort Williams Lochaber High School got to act as extras and board the Hogwarts Express themselves during filming. How freaking lucky.
Bodleian Library Duke Humfreys Library
Duke Humfreys Library also makes an appearance in Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone.
You know the scene where Harry is wearing the invisibility cloak and looking for information in the restricted section of Hogwarts Library? Yep, you guessed it thats the Duke Humphreys Library.

Bonus: A Harry Potter Filming Location In Germany That Nobody Talks About

I know, I know Germany and Harry Potter combined? Its like my worlds colliding.
I feel silly including this because the shot literally lasts for half a second, but how could I not when it involves HP and a German half-timbered house?
Anyways some context: a few years back, fans went into meltdown mode after spotting Rothenburg ob der Tauber in the credits of Deathly Hallows Part 1. According to multiple sources , the crew was simply here filming some aerial helicopter shots in March 2010, and there are no actual recognizable scenes that were shot IN Rothenburg itself. BUT, thanks to some eagle-eyed fans, it is now known that the cobble-stoned half timbered shot that appears in one of Harrys visions , was actually filmed in Bernkastel-Kues, along the Weinstube Spitzhäuschen. If you really pause the clip a million times, the distinctive Weinstube sign comes into view.
Here is the clip where it appears! Again, it passes in like a fraction of a second.
Go On An Alnwick Castle Harry Potter Tour
Although there isnt a dedicated Harry Potter tour as such, you can go on an Alnwick Castle Film Tour of the grounds while youre here.
This is a FREE guided tour that is included in your ticket entry. It will last 30-45 minutes and your guide will show you all of the film locations of Harry Potter and other movies.
Its really entertaining and comes with amazing commentary. So, dont miss out!
You dont need to book this beforehand, just turn up at the meeting point around the time of the tour. There will be boards with specific times that day.
This is weather permitting and tours do get extremely crowded. I think I saw at least 60 people in one during my visit.

Charming Snakes: Reptile House London Zoo England
Harry first discovered his gift for talking with snakes, in Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, at London Zoo‘s Reptile House. In the scene, Daniel Radcliffe speaks to an enormous Burmese python, but the enclosure filmed is actually home to the venomous black mamba, recognisable for its distinctive inky black mouth.
But dont leave it at that. London Zoo is the worlds oldest scientific zoo, dating back to 1828, and offers all sorts of incredible animal experiences. Once youve seen the snakes, immerse yourself in a butterfly paradise or get up close to big cats in the Land of the Lions.

Shell Cottage: Freshwater West Pembrokeshire Wales
This stretch of golden sand was the location for Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacours Shell Cottage in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. When Harry found himself inside the whimsical cottage he could hear nothing but the ebb and flow of the sea. Although the cottage was taken down after filming, you can still follow in the footsteps of Harry and friends.
It’s also the spot to catch surfers expertly riding waves kicked up by the strong rip currents just off the beach. The south-westerly facing spot boasts Wales best waves.
Glenfinnan Viaduct Scottish Highlands
One of the most iconic scenes in Harry Potter is Harrys train journey to Hogwarts. This is a journey that is portrayed in a number of movies, but it is perhaps most memorable from the first two movies.
The first movie has Harry taking the train for the first time, and is where we first see such locations as Platform 9 3/4. We also learn about chocolate frogs!
In the second movie, Harry and Ron miss the train due to the mischievous efforts of Dobby. Instead, they borrow a flying car, and try to catch the train.
I would argue that the highlight of both of these parts of the movie is when we see the Hogwarts Express in full steam, barrelling through gorgeous countryside and across a stunning curved viaduct.
Even better, the viaduct can be visited in real life! In the real world, this is the Glenfinnan Viaduct, which can be found in the north west Scottish highlands, around a half hours drive from the town of Fort William.
From the parking area, its around a 5 10 minute walk up the valley to where you can see the viaduct.
But thats not all. Youll be pleased to hear that the train used in the Harry Potter movies, known as the Hogwarts Express, is also a real train. Its called the Jacobite, and it runs from Fort William to Mallaig.
Services vary, depending on the time of year, but theres at least one train a day from May through to September.
However you choose to experience Glenfinnan Viaduct and the Jacobite steam train, we are sure you will love the experience.

On my visit, a kind lady behind the counter gave me a visitor map and crossed off the locations for me. She even got film stills out of the locations too! So, dont hesitate to ask if you feel youll get stuck.
But, its easy to explore the grounds self-guided and if youre a real Potterhead, youll instantly recognise the locations any way!

Alright next up, lets do Oxford. Cliffs Of Moher Liscannor
Last on the list of Harry Potter filming locations is the Cliffs of Moher on Irelands Wild Atlantic Way, an iconic backdrop for any filming location.
The rugged cliffs are located in County Clare and stretch along the coast for 8 miles. The cliffs feature as Harry and Dumbledore apparate to a cave hiding one of Voldemorts Horcruxes in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. They truly are a remarkable sight and offer a thrilling experience in person.
Goathland Station Aka Hogsmeade Station

Warner Bros Studio Tour
Needless to say, this was the official production studio of all the Harry Potter films. The studio was responsible for the arrangement of costumes, props, and many other things. you can book your tickets online to see the studio. The studio is decorated beautifully during the winter season and is a must-see for every Harry Potter fan.
Best Way To Get To Harry Potter Filming Locations
The best way to get around to most of the filming locations is by car as it gives you the most flexibility. You can also visit the most popular locations by taking a day tour, such as this one from Edinburgh, which is great for those limited on time but want to see the highlights.
Car hire is available in a number of locations in Scotland with the most selection in the larger cities like Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, and Inverness. There are a lot of car rental companies, we normally use Enterprise for rental cars.
But many of the Harry Potter movie locations can also be visited by taking a public bus or train. Some are a short walking distance away from a public transit stop, but some do require longer walks to reach or a taxi ride. So plan ahead if you want to travel by public transportation to find out whats possible.

Parmi les passages qu’elle na pas introduits dans ses romans, Rowling a noté en particulier l’idée amusante des têtes réduites dans Le Prisonnier d’Azkaban détail qui correspond selon elle parfaitement à son univers et qu’elle « aurait aimé écrire » , ainsi que la scène de danse entre Harry et Hermione dans Les Reliques de la Mort, partie 1, qu’elle trouve « parfaite ».
