Creation For Books And Films

Rowling has suggested that she may have inadvertently taken the name from the hogwort plant , which she had seen at Kew Gardens some time before writing the series, although the names “The Hogwarts” and “Hoggwart” appear in the 1954 Nigel Molesworth book How to Be Topp by Geoffrey Willans.

Most exterior scenes were shot on location at Alnwick Castle, but views of the exterior of the entire school were created from shots of Durham Cathedral with a digital spire added to the towers. Durham Cathedral also served as a set for Hogwarts interiors.

A scale model was created for exterior shots of the entire school. Models of Alnwick Castle and Durham Cathedral were also built to create more integration between the model and on location shots. It took a team of 86 artists and crew members 74 years worth of man hours to complete the model.

Weaknesses In The Hufflepuffs

Hufflepuffs tend to be optimists and see the best in everything. However, this can also mean they can be naive. If theyre not careful, they might fall for scams and be exploited.

Low self-esteem: Hufflepuffs can sometimes fail to recognize their worth because they are humble by nature. This could lead to them underestimating their own worth, or worse, it could lead to serious problems with self-worth and confidence.

In terms of ambition, Hufflepuffs can be compared to Slytherins. They may struggle with ambition and find themselves in situations that are not within their capabilities or dont push them enough.

There Are Extracurriculars For Everyone

However, a dream school doesnt just provide a rigorous education or nice hangout spots for lounging with friends. An ideal school offers enough extracurriculars so every student feels like they have a sport or club they can belong in.

Sporty students can join their Houses Quidditch team. Studious students with particular interests can join clubs that focus on subjects, like the Charms or Potions Clubs. Meanwhile, adrenaline seekers have two likely options: joining the Dueling Club or Dumbledores Army. Both will teach you how to fight in a real-world setting, but the latter definitely takes the cake for hands-on experience.

But not all wizards and witches need so much action. A few of us just want to cozy up and enjoy the company of others. For these students, consider the Knitting Club. Yes, the school even has a club for needlework.

Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets

In the second book, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Rowling pits Harry against Tom Riddle, Lord Voldemort’s “memory” within a secret diary which has possessed Ron’s younger sister Ginny. When Muggle-born students are suddenly being Petrified, many suspect that Harry may be behind the attacks, further alienating him from his peers. Furthermore, Harry begins to doubt his worthiness for House of Gryffindor, particularly considering he discovers he shares Lord Voldemort’s ability to communicate with snakes via Parseltongue. In the climax, Ginny disappears. To rescue her, Harry battles Riddle and the monster he controls that is hidden in the Chamber of Secrets. To defeat the monster, Harry summons the Sword of Godric Gryffindor from the Sorting Hat supplied by Dumbledore’s pet phoenix, Fawkes. In doing so, Dumbledore later restores Harry’s self-esteem by explaining that that feat is clear proof of his worthiness of his present house.

Ravenclaw Strengths And Characteristics

Harry Potter books pulled in at Catholic school because of concern of real witchcraft

Although not all Ravenclaws have the same level of intelligence, all Ravenclaws have the ability to study and gain knowledge.

The Ravenclaw House is distinguished by its curiosity. It has a passion for inquiry, exploration, and learning. Ravenclaws are naturally curious about their environment and will ask questions to expand their understanding.

Creativity: Ravenclaws can be very creative and think outside the box. Ravenclaws inventiveness is evident in their spell-work and interactions with other people. It also means that many Ravenclaws have unique solutions to problems and are creative.

Individualism: Ravenclaws are highly individualistic and will not bow to peer pressure. They can do whatever they want. Luna Lovegood, who wears earrings made of radish-like fruit and is passionately committed to her personality, is an obvious example.

Which Hogwarts House Is The Most Valuable

You have the answer.

It may seem like a ploy-out, after all, everyone is different! But if you look at it from a logical perspective, it makes sense. Each Hogwarts school values the qualities of its students. Gryffindors believe courage is one of the most important qualities that a person can possess and strive to be courageous in everything they do.

Gryffindors value the house they live in, and would most likely consider their house the best. The same principle applies to other houses: Hufflepuffs value loyalty, Ravenclaws value learning and are intelligent, Slytherins value ambition, cunning, and intelligence, and so are valued as such. Youre tempted to think your house is the best unless its been poorly sorted. You should be proud of your home and your abilities!

How Did Harry Potter Get The Marauders Map

At some point, the Marauders lost custody of the map ,and it ended up in the hands of Argus Filch, who kept it in his office for some time. Once, while he was punishing Fred and George Weasley, they stole the map and unveiled its secrets.

They learned that to access the map, one must tap it with their wand and utter the phrase, “I solemnly swear I am up to no good.” Without the password, the map will not reveal its true purpose. Snape learns this the hard way when he discovers it and is insulted mercilessly while trying to unveil its secrets. To clear the map, the user must say, “Mischief Managed.”

Harry gets the map in his third year when he’s unable to attend Hogsmeade with his friends. Fred and George bestow him the map, as they believe his need for it outweighs their own. From that point, Harry uses the map faithfully throughout the series to help navigate the castle and keep an eye on his friends and enemies.

The Marauders and their map are an important part of Harry Potter. Harry’s connection to his father, his godfather and his mentor is strengthened because he inherits their map, and the betrayal of Peter is made all the more heartbreaking and unforgivably knowing how close knit that bond had been in the first place. Knowing more about the Marauders and their map is both interesting, and heartbreaking depending on the context of the information.

The Entire Harry Potter Timeline Explained

There are successful books, there are extremely successful books, and then there are the once-in-a-lifetime books that define an entire generation and re-write the rules of the game for all future books in their genre. The “Harry Potter” novels, written by J.K. Rowling, were that exact sort of lightning in a bottle, reaching unheard of levels of popularity and making Rowling the first novelist to become a billionaire.

The “Harry Potter” franchise consists of seven original novels, a spinoff play, eight live-action film adaptations, dozens of video games, and even a prequel film series. And it all rests on the shoulders of a young man named Harry Potter, who discovered at an early age that he belonged to a secret society of witches and wizards, and who was destined to defeat the most evil sorcerer of all time, Lord Voldemort.

Since the release of the first book in 1997, Rowling has created an elaborate mythology surrounding Harry and the wizarding world he inherits. We also learn about major events affecting Harry’s battle against Voldemort that had been set in motion centuries before that first “Harry Potter” novel. Let’s take a look at the complete timeline of the franchise and all the major players involved.

The Creation Of Hogwarts

How Much Would It Cost To Go To Hogwarts? [Infographic]

There was an era in which witches and wizards did not live in hiding. Prior to around 100 A.D., they were known to work alongside Muggles in an open society it was even considered a badge of honor for a Muggle king to have a sorcerer as a part of their court. But over time, the sentiments of the Muggle population began to change.

Increasingly, witches and wizards came to be viewed with suspicion and blamed for any bad luck that might befall the Muggles. In response, the magical population began to close ranks and draw away from their Muggle brethren. As the veil of secrecy around wizarding society grew with each passing century, its members became desirous of consolidating their magical power and knowledge for future generations.

This resulted in the creation of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, sometime between 990 and 1000 A.D., by the greatest magicians of the time: Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin. Using the magical Sorting Hat, each founder created their own House within the school to train students with specific characteristics that the founders particularly valued. Over time, Hogwarts came to be known not just as the best wizarding school in the world, but also one of the most powerful magical institutions on the planet.

What Is The Marauders Map In Harry Potter

Becoming unregistered animagi wasn’t the only remarkable thing the Marauders accomplished while at Hogwarts. They also invented the Marauder’s Map. This map had the ability to the whereabouts of everyone on the grounds of Hogwarts. This real time tracking is especially impressive because it can’t be tricked by enchantments. For instance, Harry sees Peter Pettigrew’s name appear on the map while he’s in his rat form, and when Barty Crouch Jr is impersonating Mad-Eye Moody, the map identifies him correctly despite his use of Polyjuice Potion.

The map also includes a variety of secret passages within the castle, as well as secret passages in and out of the school grounds. This includes the passage to the Whomping Willow and a passage Harry uses to get into Honeydukes.

There is a noticeable absence from the map though that Harry discovers in his fifth year. The map does not show the Room of Requirement. Harry isn’t sure if that absence is a defense mechanism of that room itself, or if the Marauders never actually discovered the room therefore, they weren’t able to plot it onto the map.

What Did Harry Potter Learn At Hogwarts

Harry Potter Fans Go Back to Hogwarts | Wizarding World

So what did Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley actually learn at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry? How good was their education?

Better than you might think.

Hogwarts offered them an education with creative depth and breadth, certainly compared to schools that have squeezed out a lot of science, history, art and other subjects to make way for test prep.

Here are the courses at Hogwarts, as listed on this Harry Potter wiki:

Defense Against the Dark Arts

Charms

Ghoul Studies

If you are scoffing, dont. Theres more here than meets the eye.

Potions is an interesting way of teaching chemistry, Herbology is all about biology and Defense Against the Dark Arts is sort of like a fantasy criminology course.

The opportunities for experiential learning are legion, and we know from research that thats the way kids learn best, especially in science. Care of Magical Creatures for third-year students is a multi-disciplinary course .

The arts arent ignored at Hogwarts, and as for physical exercise, well, the kids get plenty of exercise simply by walking from class to class up and down the staircases in the enormous castle.

If Arithmancy seems like a silly fortune-telling class, remember that it involves complex numbers charts and was Hermiones favorite. Since Hermione is a brain, the course must have offered some real intellectual challenge.

Tom Riddle Plans His Ascent

After the fall of Grindelwald, the wizarding world congratulated itself on the defeat of the greatest dark wizard of all time. Little did they know that Grindelwald was merely a primer for the true evil that was about to be unleashed on the world.

In a small village in Britain, a witch named Merope Gaunt, a direct descendant of Salazar Slytherin, lured a handsome Muggle into marriage through magical trickery. The result of this unfortunate union was a boy whom Merope named Tom Marvolo Riddle. After his father abandoned Merope, who died in childbirth, Riddle was raised in a Muggle orphanage in London until his 11th birthday, when he was invited to become a student at Hogwarts by none other than Albus Dumbledore himself.

Riddle began studying at Hogwarts in 1938. Over the next few years, the handsome and brilliant student discovered his connection to Salazar Slytherin and became convinced of pureblood superiority despite the fact that Riddle himself was a half-blood. Riddle also collected a coterie of followers and became obsessed with the idea of conquering death. His obsession continued after he graduated from Hogwarts, and he spent the next few decades delving deeply into the forbidden arts. Riddle’s experiences fundamentally changed him, both mentally and physically, and he emerged from his own experiments as the dreaded dark wizard, Lord Voldemort.

Platform 9 And The Hogwarts Express

This is where Hogwarts students catch their train up to Scotland at the beginning of the term and travel back down on when the school year is over.

It was actually on platforms 4 and 5 that scenes for the films were recorded but if you try hard enough, you can find the entrance to Platform 9 ¾if you know where to go!

Also here you will find the grand Victorian St. Pancras Station just next door.

The outer facade of St. Pancras was used for filming Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets when Harry and Ron decide to travel to school in a flying Ford Anglia when Harry cannot get through the barriers to the Hogwarts Express.

Top Sights Where Harry Potter Was Filmed

J.K. Rowling reveals how much Hogwarts school cost Harry ...

Harry Potters story is set in a magical, largely fictional Britain, but the film series used many real locations as evocative backdrops. Other settings, like Diagon Alley, exist only at Leavesden Film Studios .

Many of the real-life filming sites are closed to visitors, far out of the way for most travelers, or an unmagical disappointment in person for all but the most committed fan. But plenty of locations are worth visiting for their own sake these are my top picks.

London

Harry first realizes his wizard powers in The Sorcerers Stone when talking with a snake at the London Zoos Reptile House.

When Hagrid takes Harry shopping for school supplies, they enter the glass-roofed Leadenhall Market and approach the storefront at 42 Bulls Head Passage the entrance to The Leaky Cauldron pub .

Harry catches the Hogwarts Express train at Kings Cross Station. Inside the glass-roofed train station, on a pedestrian sky bridge over the tracks, Hagrid gives Harry a train ticket. Harry finds his way to the magical platform 9¾ with some help, but these days its well-signed, with a luggage cart that looks like its disappearing into the wall, and a cleverly located gift shop. Expect a 30-minute wait for a photo with the cart.

In The Prisoner of Azkaban , The Leaky Cauldrons exterior was shot on rough-looking Stoney Street, at the southeast edge of Borough Market, near The Market Porter pub. En route there, the Knight Bus squeezes between Muggle buses on Lambeth Bridge .
