Which Harry Potter World Is Better

One of the biggest questions we receive here when deciding if you should visit Diagon Alley or Hogsmeade is, should I visit both parks or just one? And its a tough question because although they are both part of the same Potter-verse, they are completely different experiences, with different rides, restaurants, and shops. Well break it down for you so that you can decide: if Hogsmeade or Diagon Alley is better for your trip to Universal.

Well also help you decide if you should buy Universal Orlando Tickets with the park-to-park option which will allow you to ride the Hogwarts express!

Tom Riddles Grave / Greyfriars Kirkyard

Greyfriars Kirkyard is a hauntingly beautiful old graveyard – also within Edinburgh’s Old Town. Overlooking Edinburgh Castle, it is home to the real-life grave of Thomas Riddell Esquire.

Many old Edinburgh luminaries are also buried here. Among the ancient stones and mausoleums are found the graves of Elizabeth Moodie and William McGonagall. It’s possible that these names and graves inspired the characters Mad-Eye Moody and Professor McGonagall.

While this store isnt mentioned very often compared to other shops in Diagon Alley, its definitely an exciting one to think about. This is where the Hogwarts students buy ingredients for potions class, and its definitely an interesting exercise to think about all the weird and magical ingredients a student could find here.

This is definitely one of the stores that seems the most witchy of all, and its probably full of some gross items as well since there are plenty of dried insects that get added to potions.

Things To Do In Edinburghs Harry Potter Street

Harry Potter

So, what is there to do in Edinburghs Diagon Alley for Harry Potter fans?! Surprisingly, there is quite a lot!

You can find a Harry Potter shop to collect Wizarding supplies, take some incredible photos and find magical street art.

Here are all the spellbinding things to do on Victoria Street Edinburgh for Potterheads.

Victoria Street & Candlemaker Row Edinburgh

Thanks to the fact that JK Rowling lived in Edinburgh for the entirety of the time that she wrote the Harry Potter series, theres no shortage of Harry Potter locations in Edinburgh.

From the names of the gravestones in Greyfriars Kirkyard to the very suite in the Balmoral Hotel where Rowling finished the series, Potterheads will be thrilled to visit Edinburgh during any time of the year.

As you can imagine, many people have alleged that theres at least one Diagon Alley inspiration location in the city. Victoria Street can be found just steps away from the Royal Mile and is home to pastel storefronts and quirky shops.

Set across two levels thanks to the hilly nature of the city, the cobblestone lane leads on to the Grassmarket, an area that was once a market square and is now home to a wide array of pubs, taverns, and inns. Nearby, the Vennel is another quirky passageway that could also pass for being an inspiration for the Diagon Alley of Harry Potter.

Is Cecil Court Diagon Alley

There are many Harry Potter streets in the UK that say they have a claim to fame for being the inspiration for Diagon Alley.

Although J. K. Rowling has recently dispelled some locations like Gandy Street in Exeter, shes never officially announced what street is the official Harry Potter Street that inspired the Wizarding World.

You have the medieval and cobbled Shambles in York with its higgledy-piggledy buildings and The Shop That Must Not Be Named.

Also, Victoria Street in Edinburgh has a claim with its vibrant shopfronts in all colours of the rainbow. Its home to Museum Context which inspired Ollivanders Wand Shop.

Plus, there are plenty of streets in London that are thought to be Diagon Alley such as Goodwins Court and even Leadenhall Market which became a filming location for the first Harry Potter movie.

So, I guess its up for debate. Do you think that Cecil Court looks like a real Diagon Alley? I think its a fair contender as it does have many cool shop fronts and hanging door signs.

But, Id say my favourite Harry Potter Street will always be The Shambles in York. In fact, its one of my favourite streets in all of the UK as its just magical!

Visit The Harry Potter Graveyard

Just beyond Candlemaker Row is the famous Greyfriars Kirkyard. This is one of my favourite graveyards in the world!

There is so much history to uncover here from Covenanters, grave robbers, poltergeists , and Scotlands most famous loyal dog Greyfriars Bobby.

But, in recent years, a popular thing to do here for Harry Potter fans is to find Tom Riddles gravestone amongst other famous names from the books.

Its now been coined as the Harry Potter graveyard. Make sure to take some time to explore but keep in mind to be respectful.

Youll get a great view of George Heriots School aka Hogwarts School from the Flodden Wall!

Eating In Diagon Alley

Diagon Alley has several options for dining and refreshments, including some seen in the Harry Potter movies. They include:

  • Eternelles Elixir of Refreshment: If youve ever wanted to be a potions master, this kiosk can help. It sells bottled Gillywater and elixirs that can be combined to make a colorful, fruity beverage.
  • Florean Fortescues Ice-Cream Parlour: This ice cream shop is straight out of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. In addition to the standard flavors youd find anywhere, they also serve on-brand treats like Butterbeer soft serve and Pumpkin Juice.

  • The Fountain of Fair Fortune: Located next door to Florean Fortescues, the Fountain of Fair Fortune is where adults can go to grab a Butterbeer or more traditional alcoholic brews without braving the lines at the Leaky Cauldron.

Does Universal Hollywood Have Diagon Alley

Universal Hollywood currently does not have a Diagon Alley section. You can still experience the Hogsmeade adventure in the Hollywood park!

You all have read and watch my many countless trips to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter Diagon Alley, that I thought it would be great to give you the best guide to the Harry Potter inspired section of Universal Studios.

Does Diagon Alley Exist In Real Life

Short answer, no, not really, unless you actually are a wizard, in which case, can you take us there, please? For the rest of us muggles, its possible to see places in London that inspired J. K. Rowlings magical street, to visit the set used in the films at the Warner Bros. studios or see if you can find some of the locations in the city that were used for filming the entrance to Diagon Alley .

Where To Eat In Diagon Alley

There are five places to eat and drink at Diagon Alley: Eternelles Elixir of Refreshment Florean Fortescues Ice-Cream Parlour the Leaky Cauldron The Fountain of Fair Fortune and, the Hopping Pot.

Eternelles Elixir of Refreshment sells one thing and one thing only: potions. Well, syrups that you mix into water to form a sugary juice.

Ella loves this kiosk. They have never had cups on hand whenever weve stopped there, so either bring a cup of water from another drink spot or buy the $4 Gilly Water to mix your potion into. The potions themselves are a great souvenir and the vials can be saved for making your own potions at home.

Florean Fortescues Ice-Cream Parlour sells the famous butterbeer ice cream, but we went crazy for the Granny Smith and Sticky Toffee Pudding flavors! Ice creams are available as hard and soft serve, and they also have ciders, teas, water, and in the morning they have some breakfast pastries.

The Leaky Cauldron is the only place to eat a hearty meal in Diagon Alley, with offerings for breakfast, lunch and supper.

Of the six breakfast offerings, I highly recommend going for the Traditional AKA A Full English with scrambled eggs, sausage links, black pudding, English bacon, baked beans, grilled tomato, sautéed mushrooms and breakfast potatoes.

The Fountain of Fair Fortune offers both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

Is Ollivanders In Hogsmeade

LEGO Harry Potter Diagon Alley Builds Itself with Magic! (Set 75978)

But the biggest souvenir, the one that is almost impossible to turn down, is a wand. Especially if the wand has chosen you! That means that youll probably want to visit the park that has Ollivanders Wand Shop. Lucky for you, there is an Ollivanders in each of the parks when comparing Diagon Alley or Hogsmeade! Although book purists may be quick to point out that, technically, Ollivanders is only located in Diagon Alley, youll find a wand shop at either park. So the Hogsmeade Diagon Alley debate wont be decided by a wand!

Other shops, however, do vary.

Eyelops Owl Emporium/magical Menagerie

One of the most magical things about reading the Harry Potter books is learning about the magical creatures. Being able to have an owl as a pet at school would definitely be an exciting thing, so having magical pet shops to peruse would be one of the best things about Diagon Alley.

Eeylop’s Owl Emporium mostly sells owls and tools to take care of them. The Magical Menagerie sells many other magical pets including rats and cats. Their functions are the same: finding wizards and witches their perfect companions.
