Harry Potter Has Switched Streaming Services Again
It’s currently September 1st, and that means the Harry Potter streaming rights have once again changed services. The Warner Bros. film series has gone back and forth between HBO Max and Peacock for some time, streaming exclusively on one of the services while the other is left without. When the calendar changed to September, the Harry Potter films made yet another move, heading back to HBO Max where they are currently available.
Despite being the property of Warner Bros., the Harry Potter films have spent quite a lot of time this year over on Peacock. There was a one-month period over the summer when they were available on HBO Max, but the Warner-owned service has largely been without one of its biggest franchises in 2021.
Last time the Harry Potter movies were on HBO Max, they only stuck around for one month before heading back to Peacock. This time, however, that doesn’t appear to be the case. HBO Max announced ahead of time that the movies would only be available for the month, but there is no such warning for September’s new additions, and the films aren’t on the “last chance” list for the month. So at the very least, Harry Potter will be on HBO Max through October, but it could obviously be even longer than that.
Some other great news for HBO Max subscribers is that the eight Harry Potter movies are far from the only titles that the service added on Wednesday morning. You can check out the full list of new additions below.
Stream Harry Potter Movies On Peacock For Now
At the time of publication, all eight Harry Potter movies are available on the Peacock streaming platform. Many fans wonder why the movies are constantly shifting from one streaming service to another they typically flip flop between HBO Max and Peacock.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban are available with a basic subscription to Peacock. Premium subscribers have access to the rest of the films, including Goblet of Fire, Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince, and Deathly Hallows Part 1 and Part 2.

All eight of the Harry Potter movies will be available on Peacock for six months starting this October and into 2021, joining NBCUniversals new streaming platform after they leave HBO Max later this month.

HBO Max launched with the addition of the Harry Potter franchise, but you may be wondering why Warner Bros-produced movies are making the jump to a different streaming service so quickly after they first appeared.

Thats because in 2016, NBCUniversal acquired the exclusive on-air and digital rights to the Warner Bros-produced Harry Potter films and the then-yet-to-be-released Fantastic Beasts movies as part of a landmark deal that was supposed to run from the summer of 2018 through 2025, and also included franchise rights for use in theme parks.

Celebrations for the upcoming reunion have been going on since November. The trivia show Harry Potter: Hogwarts Tournament of Houses, hosted by Helen Mirren,premiered on TBS on Nov. 28. The four-part competition will stream on HBO Maxstarting on Jan. 1, the same day as the reunion premieres.

The service said Wednesday that all eight Harry Potter movies will be available to stream in windows over the next six months starting later in 2020 and into 2021. Currently, the movies are available on HBO Max.

Where To Watch The Harry Potter Movies Online In September 2021
As of September 1, 2021, the above movies will leave Peacock and will come back to HBO Max. That streaming service is owned by Warner Media, which also owns Harry Potter movie makers Warner Bros., so eventually the films are expected to become a permanent part of the HBO Max collection.
Why have these films moved around so much recently? Because of deals that existed before Warner decided to launch its own streaming service and was instead making money from its catalog by licencing its content out to others.
In this case, HBO Max had a deal with NBCUniversal in 2016 that gave the studio TV and digital rights for the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts movies from 2018 to 2025 a deal that Variety estimated was worth around $250 million. This was an expansion of a previous deal that allowed NBCUniversal to bring the Wizarding World to Universal Studio theme parks.
This deal meant that NBCUniversal was able to show the films on its channels , as well as its digital platforms.
This was, however, before either NBCUniversal or Warner announced their plans to launch streamers of their own, which complicated the deal somewhat. This is why the films keep jumping from streamer to streamer Warner keeps negotiating with NBC to create what Variety called “carve out on streaming rights.” Basically, Peacock has the streaming rights for Harry Potter, but keep making deals that allow HBO Max to stream the movies for set times.
