Why Tom Riddle Changed His Name To Lord Voldemort

The invisibility cloak that Harry used to sneak around Hogwarts undetected played a key role in many of the events that took place throughout the series. It was not until Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows though that fans learned its true origins. The cloak had been handed down from generation to generation before finding itself in Harry’s possession but its original owner was Ignotus Peverell.

This might not seem too significant at first glance, not until one realizes that Voldemort’s family had a similar heirloom, that is. The Gaunt family’s resurrection stone once belonged to Cadmus Peverell which suggests that Voldemort and Harry were actually related. This means that the pair were not only connected by fate and prophecy, but also by blood.

Harry Potter: The Real Reason You Shouldnt Say Voldemorts Name

Everyone is scared to say Voldemort’s name in the Harry Potter franchise, but here’s the real reason why the Dark Lord’s name shouldn’t be spoken.

Everyone in the Harry Potter franchise is terrified to say Voldemort’s name, and here’s the real reason why it shouldn’t be spoken. The now-iconic villain from J.K. Rowling’s book – and eventual movie – franchise, Voldemort’s presence grew with each installment. He did not make his true debut until Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, but the power he possessed was still enough to strike fear into many in the Wizarding World.

The paranoia over Voldermort’s power eventually grew to the point where it was not acceptable to say his name. As a result, it led to the creation of several shorthands for him instead. People often referred to him as the Dark Lord, “You-Know-Who,” or even “He Who Must Not Be Named.” Throughout the entirety of the movies and most of the novels, though, there is no actual explanation given for why Voldemort’s name shouldn’t be said. It is initially just born out of a sense of fear. But, a deleted scene from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 confirms the real reason why it eventually is bad to say his name.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Voldemort furthers his quest for ultimate power. He disposes of the Minister for Magic and replaces him with Pius Thicknesse, who is under the Imperius Curse. Establishing a totalitarianpolice state, he has Muggle-borns persecuted and arrested for “stealing magic” from the “pure blood” wizards. After failing to kill Harry with Draco’s father Lucius Malfoy‘s borrowed wand , he goes on a murderous search for the Elder Wand, the most powerful wand ever created, seeing it as the weapon he needs to overcome Harry’s wand and make him truly invincible. He goes on a quest that takes him out of the country to Gregorovitch‘s wand shop, where he kills the old wandmaker. His journey also takes him to Nurmengard, the prison where Gellert Grindelwald is kept, and he kills Grindelwald as well. He finally locates the Elder Wand and steals it from Dumbledore’s tomb.

Rowling stated that after his death, Voldemort is forced to exist in the stunted infant-like form that Harry sees in the King’s Cross-like Limbo after his confrontation with Voldemort in the Forbidden Forest. Rowling also mentioned that, despite his extreme fear of death, he cannot become a ghost.

He Was A Man Of Many Names

Speaking of names â even if it is one that’s not supposed to be spoken â Voldemort is a man of many. Fans of the series should be acquainted with most of them, but there are some that many will have never encountered. Most will tell you that Voldemort’s real name is Tom Marvolo Riddle, but that’s not entirely true. At least not for some of those who only read the books, that is.

In order to fit in with the fantastic “I am Lord Voldemort” reveal in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Voldemort’s name was changed in many foreign language versions of the book. In French, for example, he is known as Tom Elvis Jedusor while in Dutch language versions of the book he’s called Marten Asmodom Vilijn . Pretty much every foreign language version makes changes in this regard with some being drastically different from the original.

, along with several other UK supermarkets, having already taken pre-orders for the book at a heavily discounted price, sparked a price war two days before the book’s launch by announcing they would sell it for just £5 a copy. Other retail chains then also offered the book at discounted prices. At these prices the book became a . This caused uproar from traditional UK booksellers who argued they had no hope of competing in those conditions. Independent shops protested loudest, but even , the UK’s largest dedicated chain bookstore, could not compete with the supermarket price. Some small bookstores hit back by buying their stock from the supermarkets rather than their wholesalers. Asda attempted to counter this by imposing a limit of two copies per customer to prevent bulk purchases. Philip Wicks, a spokesman for the , said, “It is a war we can’t even participate in. We think it’s a crying shame that the supermarkets have decided to treat it as a loss-leader, like a can of baked beans.” Michael Norris, an analyst at Simba Information, said: “You are not only lowering the price of the book. At this point, you are lowering the value of reading.”

The wedding of Harry Potter and Ginevra Weasley took place in the 2000s. After the conclusion of the Second Wizarding War, they rekindled their passionate romance. The union resulted in the birth of the couples three children: James Sirius, Albus Severus, and Lily Luna.

Is Voldemort a virgin? By the time he was Lord Voldemort , Tom Riddle had become fully and completely asexual. So my answer to the question is yes, Lord Voldemort was a virgin.

He Was A Senior Citizen At The Time Of His Death

One might not think it to look at him, but Voldemort was actually more like Oldemort by the time that the Battle of Hogwarts took place. He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named was born on New Year’s Eve in 1926, which would have made him 71 during the final showdown with Harry and 54 when the two first met on that fateful night in Godric’s Hollow. Age works a little differently in the Wizarding world though, it seems.

Dumbledore was a prime example of how powerful witches and wizards are not slowed by their advancing years in the same way as mere mortals. The former Hogwarts headmaster lived to the ripe old age of 115 and only bit the bullet due to a pesky curse and a cunning plan to take down You-Know-Who once and for all. The previous headmaster, Armando Dippet, lived to be 355.

His Infamous Datda Curse Was Inspired By A Mockumentary

Before cutting off his nose and shaving his head, a young Tom Riddle twice applied for the position of Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher at his alma mater. Sadly, however, he was knocked back on both occasions. Following the second rejection, he placed a curse on the position preventing anyone from holding the post for more than a year. According to J.K. Rowling, this was inspired by the 1984 movie This is Spinal Tap in which the titular band’s drummers frequently ended up dead.

The curse may at first seem like a petty and spiteful response to rejection, but it actually helped the Dark Lord in later years. With nobody able to hold onto the post for more than a year, young witches and wizards never really learned how to protect themselves from dark magic. Whether this was all part of some brilliant plan or just a happy coincidence isn’t entirely clear, but it certainly made life considerably easier for Voldemort and his followers.

Couldn’t Stand: Draco Malfoy

Tom Riddle | Lord Voldemort

Draco showed too many similarities to his father, which caused Voldemort to dislike him. In an effort to both punish Lucius for his failures and attempt to force Draco into his ranks, Voldemort made Draco do many awful things. This included harming Death Eaters who failed or betrayed him and giving him an important mission. That mission, of course, was the attempt on Dumbledore’s life. If Draco failed that mission, Voldemort planned on offing him. Ultimately, Draco’s mother and Severus Snape were the ones to keep Draco from meeting his end.

Voldemort kept Draco around as he was useful to him to an extent. He never actually succeeded at any of Voldemort’s tasks but he was a good pawn. Voldemort probably sensed that Draco’s heart was never truly in any of it.

He Had A Daughter With Bellatrix Lestrange

In the stage play, “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” which became part of the “Harry Potter” canon in 2016 we learn that Voldemort and Bellatrix Lestrange had a daughter together named Delphini.

The exact date of Delphini’s birth is still a bit of a mystery, but she must have been born sometime between Bellatrix’s escape from Azkaban in “Order of the Phoenix” and the Battle of Hogwarts in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” during which both Voldemort and Bellatrix died.

You’ve Probably Been Pronouncing His Name Wrong

Remember when the guy who created the GIF file format tried to tell everybody that they should be pronouncing it ‘jif’? Well, as it happens, J.K. Rowling pulled something similar a few years back when she revealed that the ‘T’ at the end of Voldemort’s name is actually silent. It turns out that the most villainous dark wizard of all time was actually called ‘Vol-de-more’.

When coming up with a name for You-Know-Who, Rowling took inspiration from the French language with ‘vol’ meaning ‘flight’, ‘de’ meaning ‘of’ and ‘mort’ meaning ‘death’. This not only sounds cool, but it also describes the character’s driving motivations. The proper pronunciation of the name could perhaps have been better communicated to some of the actors in the movies though.

His Mind Was Extremely Sharp

While attending Hogwarts, Tom Riddle used his striking appearance to win over many of his teachers, as he was very convincing in his manipulations. He became one of the top students at the school, and was named both a Prefect and the Head Boy during his time there. He used his leadership skills and charisma to win over followers, both in school and later as the Dark Lord.

When asked about Tom Riddle, Dumbledore said that he was likely the most brilliant student to ever pass through the doors of Hogwarts, and was possibly only surpassed by Dumbledore himself. When Riddle left the school and became Voldemort, he proved that to be a fact when he was able to mastermind two of the most devastating wars in Britains Wizarding World.

Ralph Fiennes’ Nephew Also Played Voldemort

Voldemort was portrayed by numerous actors throughout the Harry Potter movies, but there can be no disputing that Ralph Fiennes is the real Dark Lord. It’s perhaps fitting then that Fiennes’ young nephew, Hero, also played the part of Tom Riddle in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

Hero, or Hero Beauregard Faulkner Fiennes Tiffin, to give him his full name, portrayed the 11-year-old version of Tom Riddle that Dumbledore visits at the orphanage. The appearance helped to launch the young actor’s career and he has gone on to win several awards over the past few years. He still has some way to go if he wants to catch up with his uncle though.
