Top Tips For Getting A Platform 9 3/4 Trolley Photo

Man Attempts to Enter Hogwarts in London
  • There are almost 90 million travellers that travel through Kings Cross Station annually and approximately 2 million that visit the Kings Cross Harry Potter shop. So, you can expect queues to be extremely long throughout the day, especially in summer. I would visit as early as possible to avoid long queues!
  • VIP Photo Passes are available for £20 per person. This allows you to jump the queue and includes a photo but its best to pre-purchase.
  • The staff will not take photos of you with your own phone/camera. You must ask someone else to take it for you if youre on your own. The safest bet would be the person behind you in the queue. Be careful who you loan your phone to!
  • The Harry Potter shop usually provides all house scarves and a couple of wand props for posing with ! The staff will help you create movement with your scarf that looks like youre travelling through the wall to the platform. But, you can dress up in your own house robes if you want!
  • Once you get to the front of the queue, it can be quite quick and hectic for photos! So, make sure youre happy with your photos before you leave the trolley.
  • You dont need a train ticket to visit the Harry Potter Shop or the trolley. Its free to browse in Kings Cross Station.

Harry Can’t Get Through

In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Mr and Mrs Weasley pass through the portal but when Harry and Ron try to do so they just hit the wall and fall to the ground. A nearby porter eyes them suspiciously and asks what they think they’re doing, to which Harry replies, “sorry lost control of trolley.”

Realising that they can’t get on to the platform they hurry back to the forecourt and take off in the Ford Anglia.

Slug And Jiggers Apothecary

Great London Buildings

The Apothecary sells scales, potions and potion ingredients. The shop is quite fascinating despite its very bad smell . The inside includes barrels of slimy stuff on the floor, jars of herbs, dried roots and bright powders on the shelves, and bundles of feathers, strings of fangs and snarled claws hanging from the ceiling. Harry regularly buys ingredients, as well as his scales, from the Apothecary.

Some of the ingredients available are silver unicorn horns , glittery-black beetle eyes , and Dragon liver .

Borough Market And Stoney Street

Why This Hogwarts Express ISN’T a train!

Borough Market

Borough Market, on the south bank of the river is one of London’s oldest food markets, dating back to the 13th century. Borough Market was used as a film location in Harry Potter and the Prince of Azkaban, where the Knight Bus is shown speeding down the main street, stopping at the Leaky Cauldron, just down the road from Borough Market at Stoney Street.

The location of Leadenhall Market for the entrance to the Leaky Cauldron was moved after the first film to Stoney Street. At Stoney Street you can also see the shop next to the ‘Leaky Cauldron’, used as the set for The Third Hand Book Emporium.

Where Is The Harry Potter Station In London

Fans of the J.K. Rowling series on Harry Potter will know of the magical place in the book for the pupils of a potion making and spell binding school called Hogwarts. That is where all these children are taught about magic skills and to be wary of the dark arts of he who shall not be named .

To get to this school you have to catch a train. And the train to Hogwarts can only be caught at the Kings Cross station platform 9 ¾. It is a bizarre name for a platform I know but this is magic, so why work in whole numbers?

Even more bizarrely this Harry Potter platform is theoretically not available to muggles . So keep the muggles away and the magical children access the hidden platform by running towards a brick wall with their trolley of luggage. In a moment of human incomprehension these witches and wizards go through the wall and arrive on platform 9 and three quarters to catch their express.

This girl was keen to make the Hogwarts express

Whilst the books and films have now come to an end, the magic still lives on. The platform Harry Potter used to get the train to Hogwarts has been made into a free tourist attraction at Kings Cross Station in London.

King’s Cross railway station, also known as London King’s Cross, is a passenger railway terminus in the London Borough of Camden, on the edge of Central London. It is in the London station group, one of the busiest stations in the United Kingdom and the southern terminus of the East Coast Main Line to North East England and Scotland. Beneath both main line stations is King’s Cross St Pancras tube station on the London Underground combined they form one of the country’s largest and busiest transport hubs.

In the late 20th century, the area around the station became known for its seedy and downmarket character, and was used as a backdrop for several films as a result. A major redevelopment was undertaken in the 21st century, including restoration of the original roof, and the station became well known for its association with the Harry Potter books and films, particularly the fictional Platform 9¾. Following extensive track remodelling in 2021, platform 10 was taken out of use, with platform 11 becoming the new 10.

Buying Train Tickets Between Euston & Watford Junction 2022

Southwest trains from Euston to Watford

Oyster Cards generally offer the cheapest train fares when in London, however as Watford Junction is on the farthest edge of London for Oyster use, you will find they are a little more complicated to use for Harry Potter World.

A simple option would be to pay a tiny premium over the cost of two single Oyster trips and buy a return ticket on the railway. This will cost £12.50 off-peak which is anytime at weekends and after 9am Monday-Fridays.

If you already have an Oyster Card you can of course use this and save a small amount of money, but you will need to swipe out of one system at Euston and enter the next within 15-30 minutes to stay within one fare.

For the visitor to London, the train fare is far simpler to use at a tiny additional cost.

Memorable Scenes Featuring The Hogwarts Express

One of the most famous scenes from the series in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets features Harry and Ron Weasley in the flying Ford Anglia crossing the bridge to Hogwarts. Realising the Hogwarts Express is right behind them, Ron swerves off the bridge, and Harry tumbles out of the car. Then Ron skilfully navigates the flying Ford Anglia between the bridges arches before saving Harry.

The bridge from that scene is one of Scotlands most famous landmarks, the Glenfinnan Viaduct, which you will go over along the way. As well as the bridge to Hogwarts, youll also see the loch used to film Hogwarts Great Lake and the island containing Dumbledores Grave.

We think the best Hogwarts Express experience is riding the train in Scotland, but we would say that at the Train Hacker. However, you can see the actual steam locomotive and carriages used for filming just outside London at Warner Bros: Making of Harry Potter.

For the experience of a lifetime, Potter fans, heres how you can relive your Hogwarts Express fantasy and ride Harry Potters train.
