Harry Potter First Edition Sells For $471000 In Us

A first edition of Harry Potter sold for $471,000 in the United States in what the auctioneers said was a world record price for a 2Oth century work of fiction.
The hardback 1997 British edition of Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, with a colour illustration on the cover, was described by Heritage Auctions as magical, incredibly bright and so very near pristine.
The book was published in the United States as Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone.
The Dallas-based auction house said only 500 copies with the specific binding were printed. The final price was more than six times the pre-sale estimate of $70,000.
Previous auction prices for Harry Potter first editions have ranged from about $110,000 to $138,000.
Not only is it the most expensive Harry Potter book ever sold, its the most expensive commercially published 20th-century work of fiction ever sold, Heritage Auctions Executive Vice President Joe Maddalena said in a statement.
The book was sold by an American collector and the name of the buyer was not released.
British author J.K. Rowling went on to write six more books about the adventures of the boy wizard that have sold some 500 million copies worldwide in 80 languages, according to US publisher Scholastic.
The books were turned into eight films which made $7.8 billion at the global box office.

He then asks Harry to join him in finding a Horcrux, Slytherin’s locket, which Harry agrees to. Before leaving, Harry tells Ron and Hermione that Malfoy’s almost certainly going to try something tonight, and gives them the remainder of the Felix Felicis.

Completion Of The Series
In December 2005, Rowling stated on her web site, “2006 will be the year when I write the final book in the Harry Potter series.” Updates then followed in her online diary chronicling the progress of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, with the release date of 21 July 2007. The book itself was finished on 11 January 2007 in the Balmoral Hotel, Edinburgh, where she scrawled a message on the back of a bust of Hermes. It read: “J. K. Rowling finished writing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in this room on 11 January 2007.”
Rowling herself has stated that the last chapter of the final book was completed “in something like 1990”. In June 2006, Rowling, on an appearance on the British talk show Richard & Judy, announced that the chapter had been modified as one character “got a reprieve” and two others who previously survived the story had in fact been killed. On 28 March 2007, the cover art for the Bloomsbury Adult and Child versions and the Scholastic version were released.
In September 2012, Rowling mentioned in an interview that she might go back to make a “director’s cut” of two of the existing Harry Potter books.

Harry has now spent two years at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and is looking forward to the third year. But after a small incident where he blows up his cousin, Dudleys aunt, Aunt Marge, Harry storms off from Privet Drive. He takes an adventurous bus to Diagon Alley.
He is surprised to find that he hasnt been expelled from school for underage magic and in fact everyone is relieved to find that he is safe. He later finds out that Sirius Black, considered to be Voldemorts most loyal follower, has escaped Azkaban, and is looking for Harry to murder him.
No wonder everyone was relieved to find Harry alive and not in the clutches of the prisoner of Azkaban. At school, Harry meets Professor Lupin, one of his dads old friends and also their teacher for Defence Against the Dark Arts. Through the course of the book, we discover that Professor Lupin is actually a werewolf , Sirius Black is innocent and Rons rat, Scabbers is actually Peter Pettigrew , one of his dads supposed friends who turned to the dark side.
Hermione and Harry use a Time-Turner to save Sirius Black. Harry is really looking forward to living with Sirius Black, who he gets to know is his godfather! But that will have to wait until Sirius is proven innocent. Peter Pettigrew, who can prove that Sirius is innocent, escapes and the opportunity is lost.

Filch takes Harry and Hermione to McGonagall’s office, where they meet Neville. McGonagall, very disappointed, takes 50 points each from the three of them and gives them all detention, which they will serve with Malfoy. Their popularity with the other students suffers because of this. A week or so before exams, Harry hears Professor Quirrell, sounding as if he is being threatened. So, Harry heads to the library to tell Ron and Hermione. They are convinced Snape was threatening Quirrell and means to steal the Stone soon, and Hermione suggests they go to Dumbledore. Harry refuses, saying that they have no proof.
Back in the common room, Harry tells Hermione and Ron Voldemort’s in the forest and that Snape wants the Stone to help Voldemort restore his powers. Afterwards, going into his bed, Harry finds that his Invisibility Cloak has been returned to him.

Scholastic Corporation bought the U.S. rights at the Bologna Book Fair in April 1997 for US$105,000, an unusually high sum for a children’s book. Scholastic’s Arthur Levine thought that “philosopher” sounded too archaic for readers and after some discussion , the American edition was published in September 1998 under the title Rowling suggested, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Rowling later said that she regretted this change and would have fought it if she had been in a stronger position at the time.Philip Nel has pointed out that the change lost the connection with alchemy, and the meaning of some other terms changed in translation, for example from “crumpet” to “muffin“. While Rowling accepted the change from both the British English “mum” and Seamus Finnigan’s Irish variant “mam” to the American variant “mom” in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, she vetoed this change in the later books, which was then reversed in later editions of Philosopher’s Stone. However, Nel considered that Scholastic’s translations were considerably more sensitive than most of those imposed on British English books of the time, and that some other changes could be regarded as useful copyedits. Since the UK editions of early titles in the series were published months prior to the American versions, some American readers became familiar with the British English versions owing to having bought them from online retailers.

The Harry Potter series has been recognised by a host of awards since the initial publication of Philosopher’s Stone including a platinum award from the Whitaker Gold and Platinum Book Awards , three Nestlé Smarties Book Prizes , two Scottish Arts Council Book Awards , the inaugural Whitbread children’s book of the year award , the WHSmith book of the year , among others. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is packed with a lot of action. Harrys scar hurts often and he vivid and painful nightmares. In one of his dreams, he sees a human being murdered by Nagini, Voldemorts snake. Meanwhile, back at Hogwarts, there is a new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher Mad-Eye Moody.
And an exciting event is about to take place! The Triwizard Tournament! Students from two other wizarding schools arrive at Hogwarts to participate in the championship. The participants include Viktor Krum from Durmstrang and Fleur Delacour from Beauxbatons. Harry is underage but someone hoodwinks the goblet of fire into accepting his name.
As a result, there are two champions from Hogwarts in the tournament Harry and Cedric Diggory. All the champions have to undertake dangerous tasks and complete them to qualify for the final. At every step, Harry offers whatever help he can and gets valuable assistance from others too including the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, Mad-Eye Moody.
At school, through a series of dramatic events, it is revealed that Mad-Eye Moody is, in fact, Barty Crouch Junior, a Voldemort loyalist, long considered dead. Through the year, Barty Crouch masquerades as Moody using Polyjuice Potion and does everything possible to deliver Harry to Voldemort at the end of the tournament.

Chapter 2: The Phoenix Lament

After the battle, Ginny accompanies Harry to the hospital wing, where he learns that the only other person who died was a Death Eater. None of Harry’s friends are badly hurt, apart from Bill Weasley, the Weasleys’ oldest child who was attacked by an untransformed Greyback, although the only side effects are permanent scars across his face and a liking for rare steaks. Fleur expresses her desire to marry Bill despite his potential transformations, and she and Mrs Weasley reconcile. Tonks reveals her love for Lupin, who had refused her because he was a werewolf and felt that she deserved someone young and whole, unlike himself. Professor McGonagall questions Harry about what he and Dumbledore were doing, but Harry, under orders from Dumbledore not to tell anyone except Ron and Hermione, refuses. The teachers then discuss the future of Hogwarts, and plans for Dumbledore’s funeral. Harry turns his back on the Half-Blood Prince’s book, and regrets ever possessing it, although Hermione and Ron comfort him, stating that while the Prince may have had a mean sense of humour, nothing in the book ever indicated that he was evil, or capable of murder.

Harry finds life at Hogwarts unfamiliar and strange. Everyone talks about him, and an adult always seems to be around when he is doing something wrong. It is hard to find his way to classes due to the hundred and forty-two changing staircases and tricky doorways. The people in the Hogwarts portraits have been no help to him, for they ignore some students and visit each other, nor have the ghosts, who always scare Harry when they glide through a door he is trying to open. Only Nearly-Headless Nick points new Gryffindors in the right direction, but Peeves is worth two locked doors and a tricky staircase whenever Harry runs into him when late for class. Even worse than Peeves if anyhow possible is the school caretaker Argus Filch, who both Harry and Ron get on the bad side of on their very first morning, when he finds them trying to force their way through a door which turns out to be the entrance to the out-of-bounds Third-floor corridor. He threatens to lock them in the dungeons, but the two boys are luckily rescued by Quirrell, who is passing by.

J.K.’s signature turns any first edition of Goblet of Fire into a book with a four-figure price-tag but there are a handful of copies over $10,000. Look out for the limited editions with original watercolor illustrations by Giles Greenfield and Mary GrandPré .
If either illustrator has signed a copy, then prices are again in four-figures. Many buyers are also looking for books accompanied by items such as entrance wristbands or golden tickets from events where J.K. Rowling has conducted a signing. After the Goblet of Fire, these signing events have become increasingly scarce.
Inspiration And Mother’s Death
Rowling worked as a researcher and bilingual secretary in London for Amnesty International, then moved with her boyfriend to Manchester where she worked at the Chamber of Commerce. In 1990, she was on a four-hour delayed train trip from Manchester to London when the idea “came fully formed” into her mind for a story of a young boy attending a school of wizardry. When she reached her Clapham Junction flat, she began to write immediately.
In December 1990, Rowling’s mother Anne died after suffering from multiple sclerosis for ten years. Rowling was writing Harry Potter at the time and had never told her mother about it. Her mother’s death heavily affected Rowling’s writing, and she channelled her own feelings of loss by writing about Harry’s grief in greater detail in the first book.

She revealed the true birthplace of Hogwarts, quidditch and key parts of the novels
JK Rowling has revealed the true birth place of the Harry Potter books in a series of myth-busting tweets.
And it blows everything out of the water on those supposed landmarks in Edinburgh and beyond.
The Elephant House in Edinburgh claims on its website that it was made famous as the place of inspiration to writers such as JK. Rowling, who sat writing much of her early novels in the back room overlooking Edinburgh Castle.
But, speaking of that cafe, JK Rowling said: I was thinking of putting a section on my website about all the alleged inspirations and birthplaces of Potter.
Id been writing Potter for several years before I ever set foot in this cafe, so its not the birthplace, but I *did* write in there so well let them off!
She revealed that the first time she put pen to paper on the Potter novels was in London.
She explained: This is the true birthplace of Harry Potter, if you define birthplace as the spot where I put pen to paper for the first time.* I was renting a room in a flat over what was then a sports shop.
The first bricks of Hogwarts were laid in a flat in Clapham Junction.
She added: If you define the birthplace of Harry Potter as the moment when I had the initial idea, then it was a Manchester-London train. But Im perennially amused by the idea that Hogwarts was directly inspired by beautiful places I saw or visited, because its so far from the truth.
