A New Species Of Snake Has Been Named After A Harry Potter Character
A new species of pit green pit viper with unique stripes and colouration patterns has been discovered by scientists in India. Expedition lead Dr. Zeeshan Mirza of the National Centre for Biological Sciences has named the snake Trimeresurus salazar, after fictional character Salazar Slytherin in the Harry Potter books.
While pit vipers are widely distributed across east and southeast Asia, this was the first with a unique orange to reddish stripe on the head and body. There are 48 Trimeresurus species already in existence, which are described as both charismatic and venomous serpents. This is now the second species discovered over the course of the Indian expedition, reflecting on the poor nature of biodiversity documentation across north-eastern India.
Dr. Zeeshan Mirza shares his concerns about biodiversity in the area being under threat.
Future dedicated surveys conducted across northeastern India will help document biodiversity, which is under threat from numerous development activities that include road widening, agriculture, and hydro-electric projects, he says.
The expedition took place in Arunachal Pradesh, part of the Himalayan biodiversity hotspot.

A snake of green pit viper specie discovered in India was named after the character Salazar Slytherin from JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series where Slytherin had the ability to talk to snakes a rare skill called Parselmouth.
According to a news report published by Daily Mail on Wednesday, the green venomous snake has been named Trimeresurus Salazar after the Hogwarts house founder, but will be commonly known as Salazar’s pit viper.
The new serpent is the latest in a long line of ‘fantastic beasts’ named after characters or objects from the Harry Potter series.
There is a ‘sorting-hat’ spider and a crab called ‘Harryplax severus’.
Researchers from the National Centre for Biological Sciences and Bombay Natural History Society found the snake in Arunachal Pradesh a state in India and also revealed that the males of the Salazar pit viper species have an orange-reddish stripe running along their head and own more teeth than other pit vipers.
In the world-famous Harry Potter stories Salazar Slytherin was one of the four founders of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry he founded the Slytherin house.

Researchers in India who recently discovered a new species of green pit vipers have decided to name the reptile after the Harry Potter book series character Salazar Slytherin.
As JK Rowlings legend has it, Slytherin, along with Godric Gryffindor, Rowena Ravenclaw and Helga Hufflepuff founded the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in 990 A.D., and became namesakes to the four houses of Hogwarts.
Among his many magical talents, Slytherin was a noted Parselmouth, or one who speaks Parseltongue, the language of snakes. Researchers say this trait was the inspiration for the new snakes binomial name, the Trimeresurus salazar.
In their report, this month, they suggest the serpents common name be Salazars pit viper.
The Trimeresurus genus of snakes are known for their powerful venom, and found primarily throughout Southwest and Southern Asia. There are at least 48 known species of pit viper 15 of which can be found in India.
Zoologists say Salazars pit viper stands out for the orange to reddish stripe that runs down its scaly, chartreuse body, and its relatively high number of teeth.
