Robbie Coltrane, the actor and comedian who played Hagrid in the Harry Potter movies, has died at the age of 72.

As reported by BBC, Coltrane’s agent Belinda Wright confirmed that he died in a hospital near Falkirk in Scotland, on Friday, October 14, 2022. Wright called Coltrane a “unique talent” and said that the actor “brought joy to children and adults alike all over the world.”

“For me personally I shall remember him as an abidingly loyal client,” Wright said. “As well as being a wonderful actor, he was forensically intelligent, brilliantly witty, and after 40 years of being proud to be called his agent, I shall miss him.

“He is survived by his sister Annie Rae, his children Spencer and Alice and their mother Rhona Gemmell. They would like to thank the medical staff at Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert for their care and diplomacy. Please respect Robbie’s family’s privacy at this distressing time.”

Coltrane was born on March 30, 1950, in Rutherglen, Scotland, with the name Anthony Robert McMillan. He took on the last name of Coltrane as a tribute to jazz saxophonist John Coltrane.

His acting career kicked off in 1979 when he was cast in the TV series Play for Today, and he would continue on to star in such films and shows as Flash Gordon, A Kick Up the Eighties, Laugh??? I Nearly Paid My Licence Fee, Death Watch, Scrubbers, Krull, Tutti Frutti, and so many more.

LONDON Robbie Coltrane, the baby-faced comedian and character actor whose hundreds of roles included a crime-solving psychologist on the TV series Cracker and the gentle half-giant Hagrid in the Harry Potter movies, has died. He was 72.

Coltranes agent Belinda Wright said he died Friday at a hospital in his native Scotland, and but did not immediately other details. She called him forensically intelligent and brilliantly witty in just one of many tributes made to him.

Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, who decades ago had said Coltrane was her first choice to play Hagrid, tweeted Friday that he was an incredible talent, a complete one off.

I was beyond fortunate to know him, work with him and laugh my head off with him, she wrote.

Born Anthony Robert McMillan in Rutherglen, Scotland, Coltrane was in his early 20s when he began pursuing an acting career and renamed himself in honor of jazz musician John Coltrane.

He already had a notable screen career, with credits including Mona Lisa, Nuns on the Run and Kenneth Branaghs adaptation of Henry V when he broke through on his own as a hard-bitten detective in Cracker, the 1990s TV series for which he won best actor at the British Academy Television Awards three years running.

On Friday, his Nuns on the Run co-star Eric Idle tweeted that he had been talking about Coltrane, wondering where he was, when he learned of his death.

Scottish actor Robbie Coltrane has died at the age of 72, reports Friday said. Coltrane’s agents in the US and the UK confirmed the news to CNN, the BBC and the Guardian.

Among many other movies and series — including a stint as a James Bond villain In GoldenEye and The World Is Not Enough, and as Lord Dingwall in Pixar’s Brave — Coltrane is known for playing half-giant Rubeus Hagrid in all eight Harry Potter films.

Tributes began pouring in on Twitter, as fellow actors, Harry Potter alums and fans mourned the loss of Coltrane.

“I first met Robbie Coltrane almost exactly 40 years ago. I was awe/terror/love struck all at the same time. Such depth, power & talent: funny enough to cause helpless hiccups & honking as we made our first TV show, ‘Alfresco’,” English actor Stephen Fry, who narrated the Harry Potter books for their audiobook releases, tweeted Friday. “Farewell, old fellow.
