Where Did Dumbledore Go in the Order of the Phoenix? – Harry Potter Theory

A listing of every movie so far that takes place in the Wizarding World, in order of the year that they are supposed to take place.

In the current world where pop culture is at its height popularity-wise, there are a handful of cinematic franchises that make up a huge chunk of the zeitgeist, with armies of loyal followers and an insane amount of conversation surrounding them. One of these franchises, alongside the likes of the MCU and Star Wars, is the fantastical British phenomenon, Harry Potter.

So far, there are ten cinematic films released from the franchise, which are based on the iconic book series with at the very least three more on the way. Considering the ongoing films are prequels, some may get confused or simply wonder about the in-universe chronology of these movies.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 Set In 1998

Where the two final parts of the Potter film series differ massively is pace. Part I moves at a steady, somber, deliberate pace, while the second part moves at breakneck speed, making the final product all the more impressive.

This movie kicks off where the last one ended in 1998, with the famous Battle of Hogwarts. There are definitely issues in the film to many fans, but overall it is a satisfying, powerful, and emotional end to a cinematic journey millions of people took together.

The Valentine’s Day Incident Happened During Sunday Classes

The movie version of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets may be the most accurate adaptation of any of the books, with almost every plot point being covered.

One of the events from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets involved Gilderoy Lockhart hiring dwarves to dress in cupid outfits so that they could hand out cards & gifts on Valentine’s Day, which ended up interrupting classes. The problem with Lockhart’s Valentine’s Day stunt was that it happened in 1993, which was a year when Valentine’s Day took place on a Sunday, so no classes should have been on.

Harry’s Astronomy Exam Makes No Sense

The O.W.L. exams take on many different forms, with a mixture of practical work and written tests that are used to gauge the skills of each student.

The Astronomy O.W.L. exam involved filling out a star chart from information gleaned from looking up the night sky through a telescope.

When Harry Potter takes his Astronomy O.W.L. exam, it is mentioned that he saw Venus at 12:00 am, even though Venus can never be seen around midnight. Venus can only be seen shortly before sunrise or shortly after sunset.

Harry Flew Past The London Eye Before It Existed

Fellow Muggles and Magic Folk: The Harry Potter Epilogue ...

Hogwarts is located somewhere in Scotland, but most of the time spent among Muggles in the story of Harry Potter happened in the city of London. Filming scenes in London for the Harry Potter movies was always going to be an issue in terms of creating historical anachronisms, which is likely why the film-makers never worried about them too much.

One instance where filming in London caused a chronological hiccup was during a fly-by scene in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, as the London Eye appears in the background. The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is meant to take place in 1998, which was when construction on the London Eye had only just begun.

The Cars In Privet Drive Were Made In 1999 In The Year 1991

We never saw much of the Muggle world in Harry Potter, with the bulk of the books taking place in and around Hogwarts. The most we see of the non-magical world happens during Harry’s time at Privet Drive over the summer.

The first Harry Potter movie shows us Privet Drive as it’s being bombarded with letters from Hogwarts. There’s a scene where we see lots of owls sitting outside of the house, much to the despair of the Dursleys. All of the cars shown on Privet Drive are Vauxhall Vectra Estates, which were not made available to the public until the year 2000, even though the start of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone takes place in 1991.

A NEW Harry Potter Video Game Actually Released THIS Year?!

I used to collect names of plants that sounded witchy, Rowling told 60 Minutes, and then I found this, Culpeper’s Complete Herbal, and it was the answer to my every prayer: flax weed, toadflax, fleawort, Gout-wort, grommel, knotgrass, Mugwort.” The book was penned in the 17th century by English botanist and herbalist Nicholas Culpeper you can read it here.

How The Timeline Differs Between The Harry Potter Books And Movies

The Wizarding World that author J. K. Rowling created for the Harry Potter series is ever-expanding. Subsequent works to the original series like the Fantastic Beasts franchise and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child fill out the world, exploring different time periods and locations where different generations of wizards existed.

But some newcomers to Harry Potter might wonder why the original Harry Potter books are set in one decade and the film franchise is set in another.

According to her website, Rowling came up with the idea for the book series in 1990 while sitting on a delayed train. She set the date for the books to match up with when she began writing them, which wound up being the same year as when the book series began, 1991. It wasn’t clear at the time if or when the book would actually be published so she used her present time period.

If you’ve read the first Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, you’ll notice it takes place in 1991. Harry was born in 1980, making him 11 when he starts his first year at Hogwarts. But that book was released in June 1997 and its United States version, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, was released in 1998. Confused yet? Well, Rowling herself confirmed in a tweet that 2017 was the year Harry and Ginny’s son, Albus Severus, was about to start his first trip to Hogwarts 19 years after Harry left, making 1998 his seventh and final year.

The Mystery Of Ogg & His Time At Hogwarts

Rubeus Hagrid was expelled during his third year at Hogwarts, as Tom Riddle framed him for the crimes committed by the basilisk within the walls of the school. Hagrid had his wand snapped and was forbidden from performing magic again, but Albus Dumbledore ensured that Hagrid was hired as the Gamekeeper of the school.

Molly Weasley would go on to create an inconsistency with the timeline when she mentions in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire that the Gamekeeper of Hogwarts was a man named Ogg. Hagrid was expelled & made Gamekeeper long before Molly attended Hogwarts, so he should have been the Gamekeeper during her time at the school.

Harry Is A Third Year At Hogwarts

Harrys parents died on the same day that Harry stopped the Dark Lord, which is mentioned in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban as being thirteen years ago, which would mean that itd be around 1994 when Arthur said that presuming he was being precise, but since Harry would be turning thirteen and his parents died when he was about one, it should be around twelve years instead.

Harry & Dudley’s 11th Birthdays Took Place On The Wrong Days

Harry Potter was born in the same year as his cousin, Dudley Dursley, with Harry’s birthday falling on July 31st, while Dudley was born on June 23rd. We see both Harry and Dudley’s eleventh birthdays during the events of Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, but they take place on incorrect dates.

Dudley’s birthday party & trip to the zoo takes place on a Saturday, even though June 23rd in 1991 was a Sunday. Harry Potter’s birthday was said to take place on a Tuesday, even though July 31st in 1991 was a Wednesday.

Harry Potter Movies In Order Of Chronological Events

Now, here’s where things get slightly tricky. The Fantastic Beasts films are prequels, so they take place decades before the events of the original Harry Potter movies.

Those take place during Harry’s time at Hogwarts, so each book/movie corresponds to a school year. The final two movies split the final book and school year.

Here’s the list of Harry Potter movies and the year in which they are set:

  • Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
  • Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
  • Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone
  • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
  • Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
  • Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
  • Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
  • Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2
  • Fantastic Beasts 3 is likely to be set right after the second film in that series and before the events of Sorcerer’s Stone.

And if the Harry Potter stage play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, is made into a movie, it would fall at the end of both the release order and chronological order since it’s set circa 2017.

Why Harry Didn’t LIVE With the Weasley’s – Harry Potter Explained

If you want to create a game like Quidditch, what you have to do is have an enormous argument with your then-boyfriend, Rowling said in 2003. You walk out of the house, you sit down in a pub, and you invent Quidditch. And I don’t really know what the connection is between the row and Quidditch except that Quidditch is quite a violent game and maybe in my deepest, darkest soul I would quite like to see him hit by a bludger.

Animatronics were made for the actors to interact with on set, including baby mandrakes, Hedwig, the Monster Book of Monsters, and Buckbeak, which was used on-set for close ups. He could stare at you, his eyes could follow you, he could bow, and every one of his feathers was dyed and put in by hand, Newquist told PopMech. There are tens of thousands of them, and they look absolutely gorgeous. Other creatures were built to give the animators reference for lighting, like the giant Jack-in-the-Box from Prisoner of Azkaban and house elf Kreacher.
