/10 Expelliarmus Is A Popular Charm Against Enemies

Top 10 Harry Potter Spells

The Disarming Charm, Expelliarmus, can be seen frequently in The Chamber of Secrets when Professor Snape first uses it against Professor Lockhart. It’s used a total of nineteen times in the series. As its name suggests, the Disarming Charm rids a user’s opponent of whatever they are armed with, which is usually their wand.

In the movies, Expelliarmus is shown to have a greater effect on those it is cast upon, as they are often knocked off their feet by the blast. The Disarming Charm is Harry’s spell of choice when going up against Voldemort. Due to their connection, the charm can battle against Voldemort’s casting of the Killing Curse, even though it is ordinarily nowhere near as powerful.

It Helps Us Understand Conflicts Well

There are so many different conflicts going around in different schools, as well as with Harry Potter and other people throughout the stories.

Once you understand the true meanings of all the spells used by different people, it becomes easier to make assumptions about their character in intention through this knowledge.

That is one of the main reasons for the contracts in the first place and why Hogwarts has such strict regulations about using magic.

What Is The Linguistic Inspiration For Harry Potter Spells

Harry Potter spells were created as different versions of words from existing languages that the author fancied.

Therefore, the linguistic inspirations for the spells to exist have come from a wide variety of languages.

Does that mean they are actually words?

No, they are distorted versions of words that exist in other languages but have a weak resemblance.

So, yes, it is true that the spell world of Harry Potter does have its own language even accent.

  • Most of the words are from Latin. For example, Apericium is a version of the Latin word Appareo from which the English word appears has also been derived.
  • Alohomora is a derivation of the word from the West African Sidiki dialect and means to be friendly to thieves.
  • Episkey comes from the Greek word Episkeu, which means to repair or restore.
  • The Italian word Allegra combined with another South Italian word, tarantella, has given origin to the spell Tarantallegra, a word that in itself seems to have drawn inspiration from the hysterical mass dances of the middle ages.

/10 Avada Kedavra Brings Death Upon Enemies

Harry Potter List Of Spells 1

Arguably the worst of the Unforgivable Curses, the Killing Curse, Avada Kedavra, is used twelve times during the series. Most frequently used by Voldemort and his followers, the Killing Curse lives up to its name and instantly kills anyone it is cast upon, making it an incredibly strong dark spell.

Some of the saddest, most harrowing moments of the series are caused by Avada Kedavra, such as the deaths of both Cedric Diggory and Sirius Black. Harry Potter is known as the only wizard in history to have survived the Killing Curse when Voldemort fails to kill him as a baby, instead leaving him with his scar.

They advise the Headmaster and are “honour-bound to give service to the present headmaster” . Rowling has explained that portraits of past headteachers tend to be more realistic than most, as the subject in question usually imparts knowledge and teaches them how to behave before their death. The portrait of Snape was installed in the Headmaster’s Office at Harry’s request.
