I got pretty lucky with most of my attractions, but a shorter wait is still a wait. While I only waited 10 minutes to ride Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts that day, some other co-workers who were not involved in this test waited almost 25 minutes to ride it with the Express Pass earlier in the day.
That’s certainly less than the posted 50-minute wait time, but spending hundreds of extra dollars for an Express Pass to still wait 25 minutes may feel like a downside to some.
Universal Express Pass Pricing
Lastly, is the Universal Studios fast pass worth it due to the pricing. Universal Orlando parks are usually open between 8-12 hours a day, with a lot of fun to pack in. You have to decide if it is worth it to risk waiting in stand-by lines and only being able to ride a handful of rides or if you want to purchase an Express Pass and ride them all!
There are 14 Express Pass attractions in Universal Studios Florida and 13 in Islands of Adventure, meaning, you will have to ride more than one ride an hour to do them all! That can be very possible if you visit during a slow season, but impossible if you visit during a moderate-peak time of year. With the basic Express Pass, you are guaranteeing you can ride the majority of all attractions in either theme park, and with Express Unlimited, you can ride them as many times as you want.

When Should I Buy An Express Pass
It depends on what time of year you plan to visit. If it is a quiet time of year, an Express Pass is more than likely not necessary. During peak dates it can be a huge time saver.
To see both parks, even at a quiet time of year, it generally takes two days to experience everything. If you only have one day and want to do both parks, a Universal Express Pass could be a real time saver.
If you are visiting during lower crowd months, purchasing an Express Pass isnt necessary. Wait until you get to the park so you can judge the wait times.
If you are visiting during a major holiday, such as Christmas/New Year, purchasing an Express Pass in advance would be well worth considering. They can and do sell out.

The attention to detail is what I found fascinating about the entire Harry Potter experience. The details are everywhere in the paint, walls, lights, doorknobs. There is always something happening somewhere. When we first boarded the Hogwarts Express train, we expected a simple train ride where we could close our eyes and rest our feet, but this was so wrong. Yes, we got to sit down, but we still had an interactive experience! As the train passed through the Forbidden Forest, creatures that lived there ran alongside the train while witches and wizards walked the hallway outside our cabin door. Even if you head into the washrooms, you may hear a certain Moaning Myrtle Its these little details that make the whole trip fun.
At first, we didnt bother going into the shops since we werent planning to buy anything and didnt want to waste time browsing. Mistake. The shops are immersive and one of the best parts of the experience for any fan, so go inside and check out every one of them and look into the shop windows. Just leave your wallet zipped tight in your pocket.
Pro Travel Tip: if you have little Harry Potter fans in tow, paying a visit to Ollivanders can be extra worth it. They may get picked to be a part of Harrys wand selection process in the first movie. Noteyou may have a better chance of getting selected if you are dressed for the role!

The Universal Express pass is imperative if you wish to do both Harry Potter worlds in one day to skip the very long wait times. There are two types of express passes: the Universal Express Standard and the Universal Express Unlimited. The standard pass allows you to skip the line one time per ride each day the unlimited pass allows you to skip the line as many times as you want. However, because you will be walking through the shorter queue instead of the regular long queue, youll miss some of the items on display to keep you occupied. There are some unique items in the shorter line as well, so dont worry about missing too much!

Is An Express Pass Still Worth It In Other Situations
Regardless of whether you visit Universal Studios Japan in a low, shoulder or peak time, a USJ Express Pass will be a time-saver. Before making the decision to buy you just have to decide how much value you place on the time you could save and how else you could use that time. I think an Express Pass is worth it in most situations. A different person could reasonably argue that at less busy times you could manage without an Express Pass.
Im a bit of a numbers nerd, so I did some number crunching using past congestion calendars for August and September 2019 combined with graphs that showed average wait times for USJ rides over the last three weeks .
I combined the average wait times for seven of the more popular rides at USJ for a pretty busy day, an average crowd day, and a quiet day and this is what I came up with:
- Pretty busy day Combined average wait time for the seven rides was 679 minutes or 11.3 hours.
- Average day Combined average wait time for the seven rides was 440 minutes or 7.3 hours.
- Quiet day Combined average wait time for the seven rides was 381 minutes or 6.35 hours.
My summary is that Express Passes are totally worthwhile in most cases if you can afford it. However, its up to you to make the judgement between the time you will save versus the cost of the tickets.

The Basic Universal Express Pass allows a guest Express access ONCE at each participating ride or attraction.
If you want to go on a ride again, you will need to use the standby line.
Universal Express Unlimited is a second standalone ticket option that offers UNLIMITED Express access at each participating ride or attraction.
Guests get to enjoy participating attractions and shows, as many times as they like throughout the day using Express access.
Express Passes sold as a standalone ticket are good for one day only, and each member of your party needs their own ticket, including children 3 or older). If you are going to Universals parks for multiple days & you want Express access each day you will need to purchase multiple Express Passes for everyone in your party 3 or older.

What Are Universal Express Passes
Universal Express Passes allow guests to skip the regular standby line and use a special Express Pass line at most of the attractions in Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure.
For example, lets say the normal line for Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit is a 45-minute wait, which would more than likely place the Express Pass line at about five to 10 minutes. This brings to light our first important point: Express Passes are not front of the line tickets. When Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure are busy, there will be a wait when using Express however, that wait will be significantly shorter than the standby line, and you will rarely wait longer than 30 minutes.
Using Universal Express at rides vs. shows
If the attraction is a ride, the Express Pass line is a separate, shorter queue than the standby line with the exception of Virtual Lines and is explained further below. If the attraction is a show, guests with Express Passes are allowed into the venue before everyone else, granting them better seats. However, to take advantage of this, you must be in the Express queue before the audience is admitted into the theater . Once both the Express Pass and standby lines have been admitted into the venue, your Express benefit is forfeited for that performance.
