The next room, Professor Flitwicks, holds a bunch of flying keys and some broomsticks. Harry finds a silver one with a broken wing that is different from the others and catches it, unlocking the next door with it. The next room is Professor McGonagalls, and has a large chessboard, for a game of Wizards Chess that Ron helps them win, at the cost of having to sacrifice himself and getting knocked out. Harry and Hermione continue to the next room, Professor Quirrells, where they find an unconscious troll laying on the floor. Lastly, they enter Professor Snapes room and find seven potions in bottles along with a roll of paper giving clues on which one to drink to continue, noting that three bottles have poison, two have nettle wine, one will send the drinker back, and the other will let the drinker move forward into the next room. Hermione tells Harry that it is a test of logic and not magic wherein most wizards fail. She solves the puzzle, and at Harrys instruction, drinks the one that will allow her to head back through the purple flame, while Harry drinks the one to head into the black flame and into the final room, where he is surprised at whom he sees.

How The Timeline Differs Between The Harry Potter Books And Movies

The Wizarding World that author J. K. Rowling created for the Harry Potter series is ever-expanding. Subsequent works to the original series like the Fantastic Beasts franchise and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child fill out the world, exploring different time periods and locations where different generations of wizards existed.

But some newcomers to Harry Potter might wonder why the original Harry Potter books are set in one decade and the film franchise is set in another.

According to her website, Rowling came up with the idea for the book series in 1990 while sitting on a delayed train. She set the date for the books to match up with when she began writing them, which wound up being the same year as when the book series began, 1991. It wasnt clear at the time if or when the book would actually be published so she used her present time period.

If youve read the first Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, youll notice it takes place in 1991. Harry was born in 1980, making him 11 when he starts his first year at Hogwarts. But that book was released in June 1997 and its United States version, Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, was released in 1998. Confused yet? Well, Rowling herself confirmed in a tweet that 2017 was the year Harry and Ginnys son, Albus Severus, was about to start his first trip to Hogwarts 19 years after Harry left, making 1998 his seventh and final year.

Quidditch Through The Ages

Or maybe its J.K. Rowlings smash-hit sport, Quidditch, that tickles your fancy. Today, Quidditch is an actual sport played at over 100 colleges in the United States such is the strength of the grip that its exerted on our public imagination. But if youre interested in the academic side of Quidditch, Rowlings got you covered with Quidditch Through the Ages, which will tell you all that you ever wanted to know about the history and rules behind Quidditch.

So Whats The Recommended Reading Order

Fortunately, Harry Potter isnt one of those series like Star Wars has a sprawling number of canon novels, film novelizations, reference books, and comics to read. Instead, its a finite universe which makes catching up on it much easier. We recommend reading the main series chronologically so that you can see Harry and his friends grow up. Then if youre still thirsting for more of the Wizarding World you can see where your interests most strongly lie , and start again there.

If you still havent read Harry Potter, just know that its never too late to start and even for those who have, youre never too old to go back and relive the magic.

Hermione charms him into talking about the enchantments used to guard it: Fluffy, the three-headed dog, is Hagrids, along with enchantments from Professors Sprout, Flitwick, McGonagall, Quirrell, and Snape. After this, Harry complains about the high temperature in Hagrids hut, only to discover he has a Norwegian Ridgeback dragon egg, which he names Norbert once it has hatched. Harry Potter Fandom Also Paved The Way For The Mainstreaming Of Fandom And Geek Culture

Harry Potter has a tremendously outsized cultural reach: One 2011 survey suggested that a third of all American adults ages 18 to 34 at the time had read at least one of the books. But what really makes Harry Potter stand out is the way people loved Harry Potter.

First and foremost, the series helped make it cool to be a geek. People generally didnt read the Harry Potter books in isolation they wanted to talk about it with their friends, and then find more friends who loved the books as much as they did. This pattern coincided with the rise of Web 2.0 that is, an increasingly interactive and social internet. As more Harry Potter fans became more active online, they made discussion of YA fiction, fantasy, and science fiction seem commonplace.

And Harry Potter fans creativity is still being felt in and outside of the fandom. In the early 2000s, Harry Potter fan forums, fanfiction and fan art archives, and email discussion groups exploded across the internet. Harry Potter conventions drew thousands of fans, and Harry Potter cosplay became a well-known sight at larger geek and comic cons.

A number of Harry Potter fans also went on to make significant marks on mainstream culture. As a member of the University of Michigan theater troupe Starkid, a young Darren Criss starred as Harry Potter in the viral YouTube video A Very Potter Musical, and his popularity catapulted him into the role of Blaine on Glee and a career on Broadway.

For any longtime readers of my blog, youll be aware that I am a massive Harry Potter fan. Ive read the books and seen the films innumerable times. Ive been the Wizarding World Of Harry Potter at Universal Studios. Ive done the Warner Brothers Studio Tour Twice. I even had a Harry Potter Sweet table at my wedding

Just today I had to stop myself buying my baby daughter the adorable Harry Potter school uniform outfit, pictured below (two things stopped me the fact neither myself nor her Dad are in Gryffindor which the colours used to represent were Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw receptively and the fact Ive already ordered her Halloween costume shes going as Toby from the Labyrinth.

I might just go as Sarah if Im feeling brave enough!) Anyway, this post is all about how to tell if you have a Harry Potter First edition set of books.

If youre anything like me, or youre around my age you will have likely read the Harry Potter books growing up.

I was 10 when the first book was released in 1997 and although I didnt read it that year by the time The Order of the Phoenix was released in 2003 I was queuing up outside WHSmith at Midnight dressed in my robes to be one of the first to get my hands on the latest adventures of Harry and the gang.

Harry Potter Movies In Release Order

There are no complicated interweaving timelines to deal with if you watch the Potter movies in release date order its two distinct series, with an incomplete set of prequels following on from the parent franchise. That means theres no need to introduce any kind of ‘Machete Order’ yet though if we get some massive revelation in Fantastic Beasts 3, 4 and 5, that may change. Fantastic Beasts 3 starts shooting early in 2020, ahead of a 2021 release.

Its also interesting to note that there are more Harry Potter movies than there are books, with seventh instalment The Deathly Hallows split into two parts because there was so much story to fit in. Were sure the extra box office didnt hurt either

Harry Potter And The Cursed Child

While not part of the original seven-book series, Cursed Child and the accompanying stage play have become a generally accepted addition to the Harry Potter canon. This 336-page text picks up where the Deathly Hallows epilogue left off, with Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Malfoy sending their unfortunately named kids off to Hogwarts Harrys son Albus and Malfoys son Scorpius serve as our protagonists this time around. Upon arrival at Hogwarts, the boys are both sorted into Slytherin and forge an unlikely friendship, which naturally causes tension between Albus and Harry over the next few years.

After a fight with his father, Albus overhears Cedric Diggorys father Amos asking Harry to use a more powerful version of a Time Turner to go back in time and rescue his son. When Harry refuses, Albus enlists Scorpius to help him save Cedric, with the aid of Diggorys niece Delphi. However, as anyone whos seen Back to the Future can attest, messing with timelines is never a good idea especially in the wizarding world. Things are further complicated by the fact that Delphi is not who she says she is, and may have sinister ulterior motives when it comes to rewriting history.
