Ranked: Every Harry Potter Movie Rated From Worst To Best

Every Single Difference Between the Order of the Phoenix Book & Movie (Harry Potter Explained)

In 1997, the Hogwarts Express departed Kings Cross Station from Platform 9 ¾ with little known about the beautifully epic adventure that lay ahead. Seven books later and the hugely popular Harry Potter series is an eight-strong movie franchise that has captured hearts, broken records, and astounded cinema fans across the world.

When Hollywood came knocking at the door of this wizarding world, a cast of acting greats and acting novices was brought together to transform the words from page to screen and what a spectacular experience they managed to create.

Each Harry Potter movie marries closely with the beloved books, but in some cases, theres added extras, missing parts, or elaboration on much-loved storylines that begged to be translated onto screen.

Add this to the fact four different directors followed the series to completion and youve got a variety of movie styles to compare too. All eight of the Harry Potter movies can be streamed on Peacock, after the service took them over from HBO Max in 2022.

For this Harry Potter ranking list, from worst to best, well be focusing on how each one told the story, what they did well, and what may have left viewers feeling a little deflated. We should also note that well be looking at the eight core movies of the franchise, and not the Fantastic Beasts series, which is a whole other bag and were talking Hermione’s bag.

The Order Of Harry Potter Movies: Chronological Order

If you want to see them in order of how they actually happen in the Harry Potter timeline, then you want to watch the Harry Potter movies order chronologically.

This historical order is a little different than the release order. The order of Harry Potter movies doesnt get too crazy here its not like the for example.

The first film, released in 2016, follows wizard Newt Scamander on an adventure to find escaped magical beasts. The other two films are the 2018 Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and the most recent release, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.

Theres even plenty of behind the scenes footage to consume. HBO released a nearly two-hour special in December featuring Harry Potter cast members celebrating the 20th anniversary of the first film.

Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them Explores Themes Of Prejudice & Grooming

Following the success of the Harry Potter movie franchise, Warner Bros. Pictures released a film adaptation of another of Rowling’s books, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in 2016. The story follows Newt Scamander, a former Hogwarts student who was expelled under questionable circumstances.

Newt, the self-proclaimed “Magizoologist” passionate about magical creatures, travels to New York to investigate an Obscurus or dark magical energy. Soon, Newt is accused of plotting with Grindelwald by the Director of Magical Security, Graves, who Newt must convince of his innocence. This darker version of the wizarding world explores themes of prejudice and grooming while also having enough moments of comic relief to brighten things up when needed.

A Stunning Sequel: Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (3/5) Movie CLIP – Fireworks (2007) HD

The Chamber of Secrets continues the successful tone of the Sorcerers Stone. As a result, we learn more about the wizarding world and uncover more about The Dark Lord.

Harry outwitted him once, but will he succeed again?

With six more movies, the answer? Probably.

Unfortunately, it is the last film with Richard Harris, the original Albus Dumbledore. He tragically passed from Hodgkins lymphoma before they started filming number three. He perfectly encompassed the sweet, thoughtful, pensive Dumbledore we see in the first few books.

As the series gets darker, Dumbledore becomes a more complicated figure. Well never get to see how he would have approached the increased complexity of the role.
