A Harry Potter Theory Changes The Chamber Of Secrets’ Purpose

HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS Trailer (2002)

Harry Potter’s Chamber of Secrets is one of the most dangerous places in Hogwarts. But its true purpose may have been altered over the years.

The Harry Potter universe may only cover a small collection of books, but the lore within the universe has spanned centuries. Furthermore, there’s always more to uncover as fans see small details that change the perspective of certain characters forever. These small details are found more commonly with antagonistic characters as they often carry the most secrets.

Perhaps one of the least explored aspects of the Wizarding World was tied to the founding members of Hogwarts. While their intentions were widely known, readers never thoroughly knew who they were as individuals. That could be said mostly for Salazar Slytherin, who, for the most part, was best known for his beliefs in Pure-Blood superiority to the point of making the Chamber of Secrets. But one theory on Reddit believes that his intentions weren’t just to set up a massacre of Muggle-borns within Hogwarts.

Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets Ending Explained

The ending of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets seems to have come out straight from a fantasy horror film. The second film’s final moments count on vengeful ghosts, gigantic creatures, bloody sword fights, and blackmail, marking a pivotal moment in the childhood of Harry and his friends as they are forced to mature and face deadly enemies way earlier than they had anticipated. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets‘ main conflict revolves around an uncanny monster lurking around the corridors of Hogwarts at night, posing a mysterious threat to the students as they are found petrified one by one.

The second film is Chris Columbus’ farewell to the franchise and shares many similar elements with the first film, still holding on to a pleasant approach while still exploring the extremes of its PG rating. With Harry hearing a puzzling voice emanating from the castle walls and a legend about Hogwarts spreading among students and professors, Potter and his friends decide to take risks in order to save Hogwarts, leading up to an anxiety-inducing ending packed with twists and turns. Voldemort nearly returns but Harrys successful onslaught guaranteed he and his friends would have more time to prepare when the Dark Lord decides to strike again.

The Chamber Of Secrets

  • In the book, when Harry and Ron realise that Lockhart is a fraud, they subdue him by performing a Disarming Charm and throwing his wand out of the window. In the film, Lockhart drops his wand in a manner of defeat, when Harry and Ron point theirs at his face.
  • Also, the book has Gilderoy Lockhart citing some specific examples of individuals that he not only stole credit for their deeds from, but also wiped memories from as insurance. The film does not actually list any specific examples of his victims.
  • In the film, just before Harry and Ron jump into the giant pipe leading to the Chamber of Secrets upon opening it, Moaning Myrtle offers to let Harry share the toilet she lives in should he die in the chamber. She only alludes to this offer in the book after Harry, Ron, Ginny, and a recently-amnesiac Gilderoy Lockhart leave the chamber, where she expressed some implied disappointment in the fact that Harry survived.
  • In the book, it says that the snake who had shed the skin must have been at least twenty feet long. In the film, Ron remarks that the creature must have been at least sixty feet long.
  • In the book, Harry walks for a longer period through the tunnel to find the Chamber after being separated from Ron and Lockhart, but in the film, the tunnel was only one small room and had the entrance to the Chamber right before Harry, Ron and Lockhart. Although, before they enter the room, there is another passage seen on the opposite side.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets begins when Harry is spending a miserable summer with his only remaining family, the Dursleys. During a dinner party hosted by his uncle and aunt, Harry is visited by Dobby, a house-elf. Dobby warns Harry not to return to Hogwarts, the magical school for wizards that Harry attended the previous year. Harry politely disregards the warning, and Dobby wreaks havoc in the kitchen, infuriating the Dursleys. The Dursleys angrily imprison Harry in his room for the rest of the summer. Luckily, Harry’s friend Ron Weasley steals Harry away in a flying car, and Harry happily spends the rest of the summer at the Weasley home.

While shopping for school supplies with the Weasleys, Harry has two unfortunate encounters. He first encounters Lockhart, one of his teachers, who demands to be in a photo shoot with Harry. Harry then encounters Lucius Malfoy, the evil father of one of Harry’s enemies, who almost starts a fight with Mr. Weasley. As Harry prepares to return to Hogwarts, he finds that he and Ron are unable to enter the magically invisible train platform, so they fly the Weasley car to Hogwarts. They land messily, and both boys are given detentions. Lockhart, who believes Harry flew the car to get attention, lectures Harry.

      Great game!

I really love this game. The first one for GBC and this one are so much better than the other consoles variation. It’s a pure RPG, with turn based battles, spells, equipment, collectables and more. The history is much closer to the books and the graphics are very compeling!

The #1 must have for ANY Harry Potter fan.

Of all the video games I’ve ever played, this is the one that’s closest to my heart. In a long line of considerably bad Harry Potter games released by EA, this one is a rare gem that will have you coming back time and time again. The story is very faithful to the book for the most part, and where it does deviate it does so in a good way. Any Harry Potter fan should own this game, and later on down the road be sure to pick up Sorcerer’s Stone and Prisoner of Azkaban , both are the same rpg style of gameplay, and while Sorcerer’s Stone is almost identical to Chamber of Secrets, Prisoner of Azkaban is on a newer handheld and therefore features much better graphics and a new combat system. There is no chance that you will not enjoy this game! =)

  • Colin Was Replaced With A Movies

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) Official Trailer Daniel Radcliffe Movie HD

In the films, small, blond Colin Creevey was played by Hugh Mitchell. Mitchell’s IMDb page confirms that the actor was only involved in one installment of the film franchise, although he did reprise his role in the “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” video game proving that the actor was willing to return as Colin. Fans have speculated that Mitchell underwent a growth spurt that made him too tall to portray the eager young Gryffindor .

But while Colin disappeared without a trace, a very similar character became part of movie canon. Nigel Wolpert makes his first appearance in “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” the same story that introduces Colin’s likewise excitable younger brother, Dennis, in the novels. Like Colin, Nigel practically worships Harry Ron notes in Nigel’s first scene that he’d asked for Harry’s autograph. Like Colin, Nigel joins Dumbledore’s Army and fights in the Battle of Hogwarts.

According to Melling, Nigel was even supposed to share Colin’s fate except that, as fans speculate about Mitchell, Melling had grown too large to make the scene in which Harry sees his dead body evoke the same emotions it does in the book. “I was a lot bigger by the last one … and it just didn’t work out,” the actor explained to MuggleNet at LeakyCon 2012. “I don’t think I was innocent enough. I was quite tall.”

Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets 20 Year Anniversary: A Retrospective

Harry Potter has been a part of children’s lives for many years now. Some might not have noticed how long ago exactly these stories came to the big screen. November 2022 saw the 20th anniversary of the release of the franchise’s second movie, Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets. The book is a bit older, having been released in 1998, and is soon having its 25th anniversary.

When a story reaches an important anniversary, as has happened with The Chamber of Secrets, fans can’t help but be nostalgic. It is surprising that this story has continued to be so popular, even after all this time. There have been controversies surrounding the author, J.K. Rowling, especially regarding transgender issues, and for many this has tarnished the franchise’s image. While discriminatory behavior won’t be tolerated, it is still interesting to go back and dive into this story once again.

Here is a look back at the movie Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets, as well as why the franchise was so popular and unique.

In return for distracting Argus Filch just when he is about to give Harry severe punishment, Harry promises he will come to Nearly Headless Nick‘s Deathday Party on Hallowe’en. He brings Ron and Hermione along as well. While there, they meet Moaning Myrtle. The three of them quickly get sickened by the ghostly party and return to the Great Hall.

Before they get to the Hallowe’en feast, Harry hears the voice again and follows it to the second floor, where he finds the bathroom flooded and Mrs Norris, Filch’s cat, hanging from a torch bracket, petrified and next to her, a threatening message is written on the wall, reading “THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS HAS BEEN OPENED. ENEMIES OF THE HEIR, BEWARE”. Then, students leaving the Hallowe’en Feast surround them. And Malfoy yells: “Enemies of the Heir, beware! You’ll be next, Mudbloods!”

The Chamber Of Secrets Was Made To Defend Hogwarts

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets 2002

While Slytherin’s beliefs were never in question, even history has shown that he likely made the Chamber of Secrets so that, if he could not, someone else would open it to release the Basilisk and kill all the Muggle-born Witches and Wizards. But there may be more to his intentions than previously thought. It could be that the chamber wasn’t made as a weapon against Hogwarts but as a tool to protect it from Muggles that wished to do Hogwarts harm.

It’s hard to say how dangerous the world was at the time of the founders, but it could be assumed that Muggles were potentially more privy to magic than before. As a result, those that attended the school likely had to risk being taken or killed by Muggles trying to uncover Hogwarts’ secrets. Therefore, the Chamber of Secrets was created, and the Basilisk within was trained to kill any Muggle threats that crossed it. However, it could equally be plausible that Slytherin still had a master plan to unleash the snake on the school with its defenses designed to give the snake a taste for Muggles.

Colin Isn’t The Only Character Who Was Replaced Or Recast Over The Course Of The Films

Colin isn’t the only character who was replaced in the “Harry Potter” movies, of course. After all, the film series spans a decade, and many things can happen in 10 years. For example, Vincent Crabbe was replaced as a result of the actor’s run-ins with the law, leading to Blaise Zabini becoming Draco’s sidekick instead.

Meanwhile, Lavender Brown was recast not once but twice, played by Kathleen Cauley in “Chamber of Secrets,” Jennifer Smith in “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,” and Jessie Cave from “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” onward, with the character’s change in skin tone once she was given a bigger role being controversial .

Griphook was recast as well. Originally played by Verne Troyer in “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” Griphook was later portrayed by Warwick Davis, who also voiced the goblin’s lines when he was played by Troyer, one of only two cast members in the “Harry Potter” franchise who wasn’t a British star. As Griphook’s role became larger, it’s likely the lack of a British accent became an issue, but Troyer’s problems with alcohol probably didn’t help either.

Angelina Johnson, a romantic interest for George Weasley and a member of the Gryffindor Quidditch team, was also recast. In the first three films, she was played by Danielle Tabor, but in the fourth film, she was played by Tiana Benjamin. Metro reported in 2015 that Tabor was let go because she looked too young to be hanging out with the Weasley twins.
