Published in 1998, the US version of the Philosopher’s Stone was re-titled. Prices for first edition first printings go up to around $6,500 with a fair selection between $4,000 and $5,000 – many signed by the author – although cheaper copies can be found. US first editions will have the number line of “1 3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2 8 9/9 0/0 01 02,” on the copyright page along with “Printed in the U.S.A.23” and “First American edition, October 1998”. Prices for later editions in good condition are three figures.

A first edition of “Harry Potter” sold for $471,000 in the United States in what the auctioneers said was a world record price for a 2Oth century work of fiction.
The hardback 1997 British edition of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” with a colour illustration on the cover, was described by Heritage Auctions as “magical, incredibly bright and so very near pristine.”
The book was published in the United States as “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”.
The Dallas-based auction house said only 500 copies with the specific binding were printed. The final price was more than six times the pre-sale estimate of $70,000.
Previous auction prices for Harry Potter first editions have ranged from about $110,000 to $138,000.
“Not only is it the most expensive Harry Potter book ever sold, it’s the most expensive commercially published 20th-century work of fiction ever sold,” Heritage Auctions Executive Vice President Joe Maddalena said in a statement.
The book was sold by an American collector and the name of the buyer was not released.
British author J.K. Rowling went on to write six more books about the adventures of the boy wizard that have sold some 500 million copies worldwide in 80 languages, according to US publisher Scholastic.
The books were turned into eight films which made $7.8 billion at the global box office.

Scholastic Corporation bought the U.S. rights at the Bologna Book Fair in April 1997 for US$105,000, an unusually high sum for a children’s book. Scholastic’s Arthur Levine thought that “philosopher” sounded too archaic for readers and after some discussion , the American edition was published in September 1998 under the title Rowling suggested, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Rowling later said that she regretted this change and would have fought it if she had been in a stronger position at the time.Philip Nel has pointed out that the change lost the connection with alchemy, and the meaning of some other terms changed in translation, for example from “crumpet” to “muffin“. While Rowling accepted the change from both the British English “mum” and Seamus Finnigan’s Irish variant “mam” to the American variant “mom” in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, she vetoed this change in the later books, which was then reversed in later editions of Philosopher’s Stone. However, Nel considered that Scholastic’s translations were considerably more sensitive than most of those imposed on British English books of the time, and that some other changes could be regarded as useful copyedits. 1) The books made it possible to publish long works aimed at children. Prior to Harry Potter, the accepted wisdom was that kids didnt have the attention span to read long books. And anyway, the thinking went, kids werent buying their own books. Their parents were paying for everything, and they would never be willing to pay an extra dollar or two for a longer book, with its extra printing and binding.
But after Harry Potter became an unstoppable cultural force, and it was clear that fans would keep buying thebooks no matter what, it started to expand. The last four volumes of the series are all doorstoppers that clock in at well over 700 pages each.
Publishers and childrens writers took notice. Booklist found that middle-grade novels expanded 115.5 percent between 2006 and 2016, the decade in which the Potter novels were at their longest.

It may have been almost 15 years since the last Harry Potter book was published, but that doesn’t mean we don’t still re-read the books at any given chance.
The first in the seven-part series was released way back in 1997, and was titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
The book follows Harry as he heads off to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for the first time after finding out he had magical powers on his 11th birthday.
The title of the book is in reference to a character called Nicolas Flamel, who created a stone capable of giving people immortality. The book eventually sees Harry attempt to keep the stone from Voldemort.
Not all Harry Potter fans will be aware, however, that the book has a very different title in the US – and is actually called Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.
The named ‘Philosopher’s Stone’ was JK Rowling’s original title, and is in reference to an actual legend of a stone that grants immortality from the Middle Ages.
The reason why the title was changed was because the US publisher, Scholastic, thought that kids wouldn’t want to read a book with the name ‘Philosopher’ in it.

Before this time, anyone Harrys age were permitted to place their name in the Goblet of Fire, but not after. JK Rowling has revealed the true birth place of the Harry Potter books in a series of myth-busting tweets.
And it blows everything out of the water on those supposed landmarks in Edinburgh and beyond.
The Elephant House in Edinburgh claims on its website that it was “made famous as the place of inspiration to writers such as JK. Rowling, who sat writing much of her early novels in the back room overlooking Edinburgh Castle.”
But, speaking of that cafe, JK Rowling said: “I was thinking of putting a section on my website about all the alleged inspirations and birthplaces of Potter.
“Id been writing Potter for several years before I ever set foot in this cafe, so its not the birthplace, but I *did* write in there so well let them off!”
She revealed that the first time she put pen to paper on the Potter novels was in London.
She explained: “This is the true birthplace of Harry Potter, if you define ‘birthplace’ as the spot where I put pen to paper for the first time.* I was renting a room in a flat over what was then a sports shop.
“The first bricks of Hogwarts were laid in a flat in Clapham Junction.”
She added: “If you define the birthplace of Harry Potter as the moment when I had the initial idea, then it was a Manchester-London train. But I’m perennially amused by the idea that Hogwarts was directly inspired by beautiful places I saw or visited, because it’s so far from the truth.”

In March 2011, Warner Bros. announced plans to build a tourist attraction in the United Kingdom to showcase the Harry Potter film series. The Making of Harry Potter is a behind-the-scenes walking tour featuring authentic sets, costumes and props from the film series. The attraction is located at Warner Bros.
