Theres also the small matter of He Who Must Not Be Named, who left Harry as an orphan when he was a baby. Then theres the film series, which was released while the books were still coming out . They helped to solidify its status as a story that was likely to last, leading on to the second series of films which also serve as a semi-prequel .

In the present day, its still fondly remembered, and there are legions of fans across the globe. It was eventually translated into 80 different languages, while 500 million Harry Potter books have now been sold worldwide. Some copies feature different cover illustrations, and there are lots of special editions.

In other words, the books are still incredibly popular, with first editions being seen as the best possible versions that money can buy.

When Did The Harry Potter Books Take Place

I always wondered when the setting of the books was supposed to be. Is it set in the past? Present? Future?

I remember seeing somewhere that there was actual years/dates associated with events in the book.

Is there a visual timeline of all the Harry Potter events somewhere with years/months/days mentioned?

All dates in the HP world trace back to the Death Day party of Nearly Headless Nick in The Chamber of Secrets. It was stated that his it was his 500th Death Day. The cake reads:

Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpingtondied 31st October, 1492

So, it stands to reason that during the second year, Harry Potter was 12, and that it was the year 1992. All dates can be calculated from that moment in time.

It should also be noted that this isn’t strictly adhered to, specifically, Dudley has Playstation before they came out, among other things.

Corvus Lestrange Jr Is Born

Corvus Jr.s birth year is explicitly stated as being 1901 in the Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald screenplay.

Top Sights Where Harry Potter Was Filmed

Harry Potter’s story is set in a magical, largely fictional Britain, but the film series used many real locations as evocative backdrops. Other settings, like Diagon Alley, exist only at Leavesden Film Studios .

Many of the real-life filming sites are closed to visitors, far out of the way for most travelers, or an unmagical disappointment in person for all but the most committed fan. But plenty of locations are worth visiting for their own sake these are my top picks.

London

Harry first realizes his wizard powers in The Sorcerer’s Stone when talking with a snake at the London Zoo’s Reptile House.

When Hagrid takes Harry shopping for school supplies, they enter the glass-roofed Leadenhall Market and approach the storefront at 42 Bull’s Head Passage the entrance to The Leaky Cauldron pub .

Harry catches the Hogwarts Express train at King’s Cross Station. Inside the glass-roofed train station, on a pedestrian sky bridge over the tracks, Hagrid gives Harry a train ticket. Harry finds his way to the magical platform 9¾ with some help, but these days it’s well-signed, with a luggage cart that looks like it’s disappearing into the wall, and a cleverly located gift shop. Expect a 30-minute wait for a photo with the cart.

In The Prisoner of Azkaban , The Leaky Cauldron’s exterior was shot on rough-looking Stoney Street, at the southeast edge of Borough Market, near The Market Porter pub. En route there, the Knight Bus squeezes between Muggle buses on Lambeth Bridge .

2021 LEGO Harry Potter sets officially revealed ...

Why are first editions so valuable? For one, its a good way to differentiate between the various versions, and its most likely to be true to the original intent of the author. Given that were looking at a series, earlier editions tend to be worth more, as owners werent aware that it was going to be such a massive success at the time.

For example, the original UK version of the Order of the Phoenix came in at 766 words, while the 2014 edition had 800. In comparison, the US edition has 870. Thats a significant difference, which saw multiple rewrites to make it more suitable for a North American audience.

Harry Potter Book Questions

Q: Where is Harry Potter set in the books?A: The magical kingdom of Hogwarts

First editions are great as a long-term investment piece, depending on the book itself. If its a popular bestseller from an award-winning author, its probably not going to be that expensive, unless its an older title. In the case of Harry Potter, this makes the earlier books significantly more expensive, and harder to find in fine condition.

The condition is highly relevant when judging the value of a first edition title. Any hardback book that has been read will show some signs of use on the spine and may be slightly dog-eared. The addition of a signature also tends to have an impact on the asking price for first edition copies, and the same is true for the HP series.

Why The Harry Potter Film Epilogue Never Stood A Chance

When Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 was filmed, the production team struggled with its famed “19 Years Later” epilogue.

After seven books, eight films, a theme park, and the creation of a veritable merchandising empire, you can hardly blame the Harry Potter production team for wanting to go out on a high note with the final installment of the beloved film franchise. But one final mountain loomed ominously before Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II could wrap: the dreaded epilogue.

This 19 years later segment closes the final Harry Potter book with Harry and company at Kings Cross, sending their own children to Hogwarts. In theory, it provides closure, a happy ending for Harry, and the satisfaction of continuity with another generation of witches and wizards off to school. In practice, it was an absolute beast to film. For one, no one knew the best approach to handle the hair or the makeup required to age the 20-something cast into believable 39-year-old parents of 11-year-olds.

It was in the year 2000 that the first Harry Potter film — Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone — was shot at a studio in Leavesden. On completion of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Warner Bros. announced that they would be purchasing the site as a permanent attraction dedicated to the wizarding world. It was officially launched as Warner Bros. Studio Tour London The Making of Harry Potter in 2010. Props, costumes and sets from all eight films have been preserved and maintained to date.

Harry & Ron Pass The Wrong Tower

In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry & Ron are prevented from entering Platform 9 3/4 by Dobby, so they decide to use the magic Ford Anglia to fly to Hogwarts. The invisibility spell that protects the Ford Anglia is faulty, which means that several Muggles spot the car as they fly past. When the boys arrive at Hogwarts, they are told that they were seen flying past the Post Office Tower.

The problem with this line is that the Post Office Tower had its name changed to the BT Tower in 1984. The BT Tower is also south of Kings Cross station, which means that Harry and Ron would have been flying in the opposite direction.

The fantastic beasts take something of a backseat as the plot moves to the pursuit of Grindelwald, who wants to establish a wizarding order that’s superior to muggles. We meet a young Dumbledore giving a link back to the Harry Potter films, but many of the characters from the first Fantastic Beasts return, as well as characters referenced in other movies, like Nicholas Flamel. The film is set in 1927 but came out in 2018, with a third instalment due to complete the story at some point in the future.

2017 Albus and Scorpius are sorted into Slytherin whilst Rose, as expected, finds herself in Gryffindor. Harry is now the Head of Magical Law Enforcement at the Ministry of Magic, Hermione is Minister for Magic, and Ron manages Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes in Diagon Alley.

Albus forms an unexpected friendship with Scorpius, while his relationship with his father Harry takes a turn for the worse.

Albus and Scorpius steal a Time Turner with Delphi Diggory to save Cedric Diggory after he won the Triwizard Tournament an event that takes place in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

2020: Albus and Scorpius use a time turner to travel back to 1994 and prevent Cedric Diggory from completing the first round of the Triwizard Tournament. When they return, they realise they’ve created an alternate timeline in which Ron and Hermione never married and thus Rose doesn’t exist. Albus has been sorted in Gryffindor instead of Slytherin.

Albus and Scorpius return to the past again to stop Cedric completing the second task, and return to find Scorpius is now alone because in their alternate timeline, Voldemort killed Harry and won the Battle of Hogwarts .

In this alternate timeline, Cedric became a Death Eater who eventually killed Neville Longbottom, therefore Neville never killed Nagini, Voldemorts final Horcrux. Dolores Umbridge is headmistress, and Snape is still alive.

They return to 2020, as it was at the beginning of The Cursed Child.

Harry & Hermione Dance To A Song That Hasnt Been Released

There is a scene in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 where Harry and Hermione dance together to a song called O Children by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. This scene seems to have only been added to placate the wounded souls of the Harry/Hermione shippers around the world, who had their hearts broken by the final book in the series.

The problem with this scene is that the song O Children wouldnt exist for a few more years. The events of The Deathly Hallows take place in 1997, but the album that O Children was released on wouldnt be released until 2004.

When Do The Harry Potter Books Take Place

What It’s Like At The Official Harry Potter Set At Warner Bros. London Studio

On WikibooksMuggles Guide to Harry Potter, the guide reveals events in the books take place between 1991 and 1997. The books epilogue takes place shortly before 2020.

Fortunately, theres a plethora of evidence supporting this timeline. In the book Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, it is stated that Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington died on October 31, 1492. It is established in that book that he is celebrating his 500th death day, meaning the events are taking place in 1992.

According to the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, both Harrys parents Lily and James Potter were killed by Voldemort on Oct. 31, 1981. Thanks to the fact that we know Harry was around 11 years old at the time of the first book, this backs up our timeline and places the books events in 1991, right before his 11th birthday.

Granted, there are some historical anachronisms that throw a wrench in the mix. Duddley owns a PlayStation years before its 1995 release, for example. However, this is the world of magic, so lets write Duddleys premature PS1 down to fantasy.
