It’s been nearly 20 years since the ‘boy who lived’ and the world of witchcraft and wizardry came to the big screen.

Still to this day, even after it being a decade since the last movie hit the theatres – we are still drawn to franchise.

The films grossed over $7 billion in the box office, coming to a close with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 – which saw the protagonist defeat his arch-nemesis Lord Voldemort.

However, the magic of the series still lives on in the great locations that the movies were filmed in across the country, but many of these are right here in Bucks.

So here at BuckinghamshireLive we have created a muggles guide of where to visit to relive some moments from our beloved Harry Potter childhood films.

Malham Cove North Yorkshire

Malham Cove is a massive limestone formation near to the village of Malham in North Yorkshire. It was formed over 12,000 years ago at the end of the ice age, and is in fact what is left of a massive waterfall.

Its a very picturesque location that is popular with walkers, and the large area at the top of what was the waterfall will be very familiar to Harry Potter fans.

This area was used in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, when Harry and Hermione are travelling together in an effort to destroy the Horcruxes. The top of Malham Cove is where they camp for the night after being abandoned by Ron.

Malham Cove is free to visit, and the walking trail from Malham Village to the foot of the cove is around a mile each way. You can also climb to the top from a footpath at the base, which is quite steep. However, the views from the top are spectacular and this is the actual Harry Potter filming location so is worth the effort. Overall, its around 30 minutes each way to the top.

If you have time, there are lots more natural attractions to see in the area and plenty of walking trails, including a lovely loop trail that continues from Malham Cove to Goredale Scar. You can see more on visiting as well as tips for walks, on this community website.

Christ Church: Bodley Tower Staircase

There were a hundred and forty-two staircases at Hogwarts: wide, sweeping ones narrow, rickety ones some that led somewhere different on a Friday some with a vanishing step halfway up that you had to remember to jump.

Probably one of the other most famous filming locations in the franchise, the grand stone staircase which is located inside Bodley Tower at Christ Church College is a prominent feature in the first two Harry Potter films.

Fans will recall several memorable scenes which have been filmed here from Harrys first day at Hogwarts to a flashback sequence between Tom Riddle and Dumbledore to the scene near the end of the first movie where Harry is reunited with Ron and Hermione after being released from Hogwarts Infirmary, it certainly holds a special place in many Potterheads hearts.

Today, the staircase is used by students at the university as a way of gaining access to Christ Church Dining Hall, where they can enjoy the same magical walk as the Hogwarts students. Whenever students join us for our summer courses in this historic college, this staircase is one of the most hotly-requested sites to visit. Nothing quite beats walking to formal up these iconic stone steps.

Swinley Forest Aka One Of The Forests They Camp In

Appeared in: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1

Parts of Swinley Forest in Bracknell were used for miscellaneous scenes in Deathly Hallows Part 1, like when theyre being chased by Snatchers but most of them used green screens to add more dramatic landscapes, so I wouldnt go out of my way to see this place.

That said, I found this hilarious news article about how the crew kept denying that they were filming Harry Potter there, until a 10 year old boy literally just found a callsheet in the bushes that had ALL THE ACTORS ON-SET TIMES, where they would be, and a map of the locations! Luckily, he only found this after the filming wrapped up, otherwise it would have made fangirl stalking a little too easy.

Glenfinnan Viaduct and the West Highland Railway Line

You can see the railway line that was used for the train journey to Hogwarts. It runs about 42 miles, from Fort William to Mallaig, and crosses the Glenfinnan Valley on the Glenfinnan Viaduct. In the movies, you’ll also see Ben Nevis and the spectacular countryside around Glen Nevis.

Glenfinnan Viaduct – this beautiful railroad track can be seen in the flying car scenes in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. It’s located at Lochaber, in the highlands of Scotland. The railway is incredible – an enormous, arching bridge, 100 feet above the ground. There are 21 large arch supports holding the bridge up, over the 1,000 feet it crosses in the valley. It was built between 1897 and 1901. Glenfinnan viaduct

In real life, the train ends up in Mallaig, not Hogwarts. Mallaig Harbor.

You can view the viaduct from the parking lot of the Glenfinnan Monument. This was erected in 1815 to commemorate the place where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard, starting the 1745 Jacobite Rising. There’s a gift shop there, a restroom, and free parking.

Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is a 2004 fantasy film directed by Alfonso Cuarón and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, based on J. K. Rowling‘s 1999 novel of the same name. Produced by Chris Columbus, David Heyman, and Mark Radcliffe and written by Steve Kloves, it is the sequel to Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and the third instalment in the Harry Potter film series. Hogwarts Halls In Oxford

If theres another city that stands out for its must-visit filming locations, it has to be Oxford. Specifically, Christ Church College, which was used as inspiration to create the Hogwarts Great Hall. Here, youll find the authentic stairs that lead to the castles dining room, where Minerva McGonagall welcomes new students.

The cloisters of New College and the Divinity School are other locations you can visit during the Oxford Harry Potter Tour. Youll see the School of Witchcraft and Wizardrys infirmary, the courtyards used for several film scenes, the Hogwarts library Youll be surprised!

Harry Potter Filming Locations In London

Kings Cross station where the train leaves for Hogwarts, Piccadilly Circus where Harry, Ron and Hermione flee from the Death Eaters, the destruction of the Millennium Bridge during Voldemorts darkest days, the Westminster tube station leading to the Ministry of Magic London is definitely a key player!

Pinewood Studios Iver Heath

Buckinghamshire can proudly say they played an integral part to bringing the franchise to an end.

Deathly Hallows Part 2 was shot in part and mixed at Pinewood Studios.

The film made use of world famous 007 stage to create sets that include the Dark Forest and also where Kings Cross and the Hogwarts Entrance Hall staircase were built.

The studios also welcomed the beginning of the end as fans began to say farewell in Deathly Hallows Part 1 in which the Forest of Dean and the Frozen Lake were recreated.

Pinewood Studios gardens also saw the village of Godric’s Hollow rise from the ground.

Costume And Set Design

Cuarón wanted to establish a more mature tone in the characters’ costumes and the sets. He explained, “What I really wanted to do was to make Hogwarts more contemporary and a little more naturalistic.” He studied English schools and noted, “Each teenager’s individuality was reflected in the way they wore their uniform. So I asked all the kids in the film to wear their uniforms as they would if their parents weren’t around.” Columbus considered the costumes changes as “a reflection of the character development within the books themselves” and their transition to teenagers. Whereas in the first two films the characters are constantly in their uniforms, in Prisoner of Azkaban the characters often wear modern street clothes. Rowling, who had to be consulted on this change, stated, “for me the cloaks and everything makes sense for the academic time but in personal time they would be wearing their own clothes.” joined the film as costume designer, also working on all of the following instalments in the series.

Some sets were either reused from earlier films or used for more than one space. The Defence Against the Dark Arts and Divination classrooms were filmed in the same set. The Honeydukes set was a redress of the set of Flourish & Blotts that was seen in Chamber of Secrets, which, in turn, had been redressed from the Ollivanders set from the first film.

If you scare easily, then be careful if you visit the Gloucester Cathedral, which has been a place of worship for over 1,300 years. While you may not meet Nearly Headless Nick or Moaning Myrtle in these halls, an ancient wooden door leads down to the old crypt, said to be haunted by monks from the old Gloucester monastery. Scenes from the first two films were shot here including the shots of Harry and Ron hiding from the troll.

• Leadenhall Market is one of Londons oldest markets dating back to the 14th-century, the land was originally owned by Sir Hugh Neville as part of his estate! Later, Lord Mayor Richard Whittington purchased it.

• Sir Horace Jones designed the building we see today in 1881, hes the architect of the Tower Bridge, Billingsgate and Smithfield markets too.

• Leadenhall Market became a Grade II listed building in 1972. This means that the building will be preserved and be protected and can be enjoyed for many years to come.
